Hello one all! Decided to join you all at last. This is a really great site especially for one so new to folk music as I am. Message especially for Penny S. If you haven't already found it, the death of Anne Linnington and the story about the barn catching fire were reported in our local paper today. I can put this on the forum for you or mail to you personally if you want the wording. It said a memorial service will be at All Saints Church, Birchington on Monday 22nd May at 3pm.

Hi there Jacky of Kent. And how's beer country doing these days? I used to live in Paddock Wood many years ago - We used to go on rambles through the orchards.

Hi Bert, Sadly the sale of hops are in decline in Kent, and so the traditional influx of London families who used to travel down to Kent to pick the hops are disappearing too. Having said that, there are plenty of good pubs!! This area is also famous for Shellfish, particularly the Whitstable Oyster.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Hi Jacky, welcome aboard. I once did a David Copperfield hike from Maidstone to Canterbury to Dover. Great fun -- not like David's hike -- no Betsy Trotwood at the other end either....
yours, Peter T.

Hi Jacky, thanks for the research. which paper is that? I could call them and order a copy. My father (now in Gloucestershire) won't be able to make it for the service, but he'd like to know about it.

And welcome to the Mudcat.

Penny

Glad you decided to take the plunge. Actually its more of a splat........

Pay no attention to Bert. He couldn't find either end and he's forgotten where the middle is.

Welcome, Jacky . .

Actually, the hops aren't as much in decline as they once were . . (Speaking as one who spent most of his early childhood summers in Whitstable, when steam trains used to run along the embankment above Seasalter Marshes).

And Whitstable also ought to be famous for giving The Oyster Band their name, just to bring in a musical reference.

Enjoy life and the Mudcat . .

G.

I sense a message in your opening post that you have been popping in anonymously for awhile and finally decided to become "official". It's always nice when someone enters the asylum with their eyes wide open. Welcome, and enjoy!

Jacky, on second thoughts (well... actually read the thread through!) I come from the true home of the native oyster, the Blackwater in Essex (although those Colne types would disagree). I did three years in Canterbury in the 80's, and fell in with them rough Oyster Band fellas. Very happy years, drinking in the Jolly Sailor in Mrs Pope's reign (I'm told it's been gentrified now) and being paid to clear Doug's Chippie @ chucking out time, using only my guitar! We had a flat above Gateways, by the Kings School Shoppe in the Borough/Palace Street.

Funny how life just gets less fun, innit?

All the best

Skipjack K8

Wow! Now that's what I call a welcome! Its a small world after all. Thanks everyone.

Message for Penny S - The artical about Anne Linnington was in the Isle Of Thanet Gazette, dated Friday, May 19th. Their address is: Gazette Building, Union Row, Margate, Kent, CT9 1PP Telephone: Thanet (01843) 221313 or fax with same code 292535. Glad to have helpled.

GeorgeH - I know Whitstable very well because I was born there and most of my family still live there so I visit at least once a week. They have an Oyster Festival every year, Morris dancers etc. and plenty of beer!!
