Oral sex can raise the risk of throat cancer by transmitting a virus linked to the disease, scientists have claimed.

A new study shows that human papillomavirus (HPV) spread by the sex act can trigger a specific type of throat cancer in both men and women.

HPV infection through sexual intercourse is normally associated with cervical cancer. But researchers found that the virus is also a powerful risk factor for oropharyngeal cancer, which affects the tonsils, tongue and throat.

This was especially true for people who had experienced oral sex with multiple partners. The study showed that having a history of HPV infection increased the chances of developing the cancer 32 times.

Previously smoking and drinking alcohol were considered the strongest risk factors for oropharyngeal cancer, which affects the tonsils, back of the tongue, and throat. But neither are any where near as hazardous as HPV infection, according to the new findings. Smoking raised the risk of throat cancer three times, and drinking 2.5.

Researcher Dr Gypsyamber D'Souza (correct), from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, US, said: "It is important for health care providers to know that people without the traditional risk factors of tobacco and alcohol use can nevertheless be at risk of oropharyngeal cancer."

Oral sex - performed on both men and women - is the chief way HPV enters the mouth, said the scientists.

Study participants who had more than six oral sex partners in their lifetime and evidence of HPV infection were 8.6 times more likely to develop the cancer than those who had never engaged in oral sex.

The possibility of mouth-to-mouth transmission of the virus, for instance by kissing, could not be ruled out, said the researchers. HPV can be passed on by skin contact and may be found in the genital tract, the saliva, urine and semen.

The findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that the HPV-16 strain of the virus was present in the tumours of 72% of cancer patients taking part in the study. People whose immune systems had produced detectable antibodies against HPV molecules were 58 times more likely to have oropharyngeal cancer.

Reckless reporting by stupid journalists. They are talking about relative risk increase instead of absolute and don't even mention the baseline risk.

If 3 in 10,000 humans get one type of cancer and a certain lifestyle makes that 4 in 10,000 may get that type of cancer that is a relative risk increase of 25%!!!

The baseline risk (mentioned in the study) to get throat cancer is 0.013 %. The risk among the study participants admitting(?) to have had oral sex is 0.11 %. You need a headline? OK, calculate by which factor you have to multiply 0.013 to get 0.11. That's a nice big figure (relative risk increase) that may sell the paper. People enjoy to be scared.

Wolfgang

...anyway, beyond the silly jokes, I like to see information put out for those who might need to know...and I like that information put in PERSPECTIVE like Wolfgang's post.

(remember the Strontium 90 in cranberries scare? Turned out you'd need to eat several pounds of cranberries a day for years to the amount of Strontium 90 that affected lab rats.)

ROFLMAO, Peace. And after the first reaction, I went on to get a flashback to a co-worker at a job 30 years ago, and the way he ate oranges at lunch; it looked so much like oral sex, it was just about unbelievable.
