Subject: BS: What do flies taste like ? From: Dave Hanson Date: 12 May 11 - 02:51 AM Prompted by the thread ' What do mice taste like ' I was reminded that once the great English fly fisherman and writer GEM Skues in an effort to discover why trout often prefered on kind of fly over another, conducted an experiment of tasting them all, he came to the conclusion that they all tasted the same, bloody awful, now that is dedication. Subject: RE: BS: What do flies taste like ? From: Arthur_itus Date: 12 May 11 - 03:12 AM The taste depends on where they have been, I suppose. The mind conjures up all sorts of disgusting places that flies land on! |

Subject: RE: BS: What do flies taste like ? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 12 May 11 - 09:47 AM I doubt the reason fish prefer one type of fly over another has much to do with taste. The reasons a fish strikes any lure are poorly understood. One of the most effective lures used around here when trolling for Spanish Mackerel is made from a short length of plastic drink straw from McDonald's (Pic here). Now, there's absolutely no humanly comprehensible reason why a fish would prefer a McDonald's straw over a lure which mimics a natural bait, but they'll often hit a straw lure when nothing else will work. And the straw lure isn't unique. There are hundreds of lures which bear absolutely no resemblance to anything natural, yet they elicit a strike response from fish. But, as to the actual question at hand, flies taste better than cicadas, stinkbugs and cockroaches, but not as good as crickets, grasshoppers and termites. |

Subject: RE: BS: What do flies taste like ? From: Rapparee Date: 12 May 11 - 11:10 AM Well, you see, fish are stupid. Not as stupid as someone who spends hours trying to catch them with equipment that costs slightly less than the annual US Defense budget, but stupid. |

Subject: RE: BS: What do flies taste like ? From: Dave Hanson Date: 12 May 11 - 02:46 PM Bee-dubya-ell, in the UK a popular cod lure was made from a chrome car door handle, and very successful it was, but the trout on English chalk streams have more conservative diets of may flies and other day flies which hatch in the water, where several type of fly are hatching at the same time the fish will sometimes feed exclusively on one kind of fly in preference to all others, get it ? Subject: RE: BS: What do flies taste like ? From: Bettynh Date: 12 May 11 - 04:46 PM Berndt Heinrich (he's the U. of Vt. professor who studies ravens, among other creatures) got curious about cluster flies. These critters will hatch out in mid-winter in a warm house in New England, then go to a window and die. He found some dormant flies and some that had hatched. He tasted them. The dormant flies were sweeter than the active flies. His presumption was that the sweetness was some sort of antifreeze. He left the subject for one of his grad students to explore. I doubt that I ever would have had the impulse to taste them, but I guess that's science. :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: What do flies taste like ? From: Jeri Date: 12 May 11 - 06:59 PM 999, I always thought you were eating those swatted ones. Now, I know. Seriously though, bugs aren't technically meat are they? Are they kosher? Didn't we have a thread about that? |
Subject: RE: BS: What do flies taste like ? From: Jeri Date: 12 May 11 - 07:34 PM OK, the flying insects can't "creep on all fours" and they don't have legs similar to a grasshopper, cricket, or locust, so I don't think they're kosher. |

Subject: RE: BS: What do flies taste like ? From: Jeri Date: 13 May 11 - 09:11 PM Bugs got 6 legs? Who knew!? Seriously, we may, but Leviticus, not so much: "All flying insects that creep on all fours shall be an abomination to you. Yet these you may eat of every flying insect that creeps on all fours: those which have jointed legs above their feet with which to leap on the earth. These you may eat: the locust after its kind, the destroying locust after its kind, the cricket after its kind, and the grasshopper after its kind. But all other flying insects which have four feet shall be an abomination to you." |
Subject: RE: BS: What do flies taste like ? From: Jeri Date: 13 May 11 - 09:14 PM Perhaps it only means they creep on at least 4 feet, so you shouldn't eat a centipede either. |
