A week or so ago, there was a big hullabaloo in the local paper over Sandpiper Soup being served at the Sandpiper festival. The festival raises awareness and money for the declining sandpipers, piping plovers being the worst off. Wellsirrrree ! The nasty letters to the editor were quelled when the it was revealed that the Sandpiper Soup did not contain sandpipers ! Amongst a raft of other revellations from the event's organizers : Irish Stew contains no Irishmen, etc, etc, etc

A guy was arrested for shooting a bald eagle. Judge asked "Why did you shoot that eagle?" man says "I was hungry, so, I ate it." judge says "Well I must fine you at least the minimum because it is endangered, but, at least you did eat it so it didn't go to waste, but, tell me, what did it taste like?"
"Something between a California Condor, and a Spotted owl."

And on the other side of the coin I heard on the radio today that there is a scholar in India who revealed that historical documents show that Hindus used to eat beef. They made the cow a sacred animal around the Fifth Century AD. The scholar is now facing death threats and possible jail time!

You have all seen those bumper stickers that say "I (heart symbol) my Golden retriever." (or whatever)

This then led to bumper stickers which said "I (spade symbol) my cat."

A bit later, the inevitable: "I (club symbol) baby seals."

Sick, but ya gotta admire the creativity (I think).

I am not as averse to someone hunting and eating an animal (sadly in parts of Africa many endangered animals are being killed and EATEN because there is no other food; this includes elephants) as I am to those who wish to have the pelt or head as a trophy, or those Yuppies who pay big bucks to be taken on some cushy, guide-led "expedition" into the jungle (which said Yuppie would not survive one hour in if left there alone, hmm, there's a thought) so he can shoot some defenseless creature (which has been located and tracked by the guide) and mount its head on his office wall...

What a self-serving, clueless, pretentious thing to do.

I do support the fishing bans on endangered fish (and lobsters in teh Northeast) and dwindling populations, but I do think before the government imposes such bans on those who depend on these fish for their livelihood, they should look into compensating the fishermen in some way...a complex issue to say the least and the long-range problem has more to do with shifting ways of life...look at Nova Scotia; no more mining or fishing to speak of (at least, not like the old days); they shifted to tourism and are doing very well...

I have also seen the Smithsonian's Ivory-Billed Woodpecker in it's little glass case. It was not good to eat, it simply had a narrow range and couldn't co-exist with man and it's habitat was reduced until breeding was a problem.

Peg, I'm with you 99%, but, there is something you may not know. When I was a Maine Coastal Warden back in the 60's, the annual catch of lobsters was 20 million pounds. Last year it was over 40 million pounds. It's hard to understand why they are pushing the panic button on lobsters.

Now, the matter of overfishing of certain other species is another thing to be concerned about. Cod is the species that drew the Europeans to this part of the world in the first place, and, with the stocks of Cod at an alarming low, it has given the lobstaers a break, because Cod are lobster predators.

All cooked over genuine rainforest charcoal, of course.

I'd suggest Kentucky Fried Children, but it's plain that we're not going to run out of children in the near future, so they're not endangered. Not as a group anyway - but individually... ;-)

Woodpecker Cider, squeezed from real woodpeckers.

Actually, _any_ farm animal in Britain is living on the edge ATM...

Graham.

Kendall I did not know that about the lobsters; I would have thought there were LESS of them if a ban was enacted. Is it that there are more effective methods for catching them now and so more of them get caught hence the ban?

?

Speaking of the Seal hunt, one of my pet subjects

1) The Canadian government is going to discontinue subsidies for the seal hunt.

2)Some people blame the seals for the low stocks of cod

3) The $ amount generated by the Canadian Atlantic Seal hut is aproximately the income generated for one year by two Mc Donalds outlets.

4) Harp seals are by no means endangered

5) Protester rent helicopters for $1,000s a day while the Hunters who are desperatly trying to find some way to earn some income, head to the ice in rusty old trawlers.

6) There are some who conjecture that the introduction of Viagra to the asian markets explains the huge drop by the Chinese in their demand for seal penis, a traditional aphrodesiac in Chinese Herbal medicine. (A friend of mine conjectures Vigra is just eaiser to swallow!)

7) The people who are seal hunting are not doing it because they think it is fun or because they are cruel.

Just a few seal harvest factoids.

It's true that there are more traps being fished, and, as has always been the case, about 90% of the lobsters that have just reached legal size since their last shedding are caught each year, there is little room for them to be much more plentiful.

For years the fishermen blamed the decline in lobster stocks on seals, but, seals are marine mammals, and protected, so, that theory went down the tubes. Now they blame the drop in cod on seals because they refuse to believe (or admit) that it is over fishing by humans that have killed the cod fishery. It's as that old Indian said "When the last tree has been cut down, when the last river is polluted, when the last fish has been caughtr, only then will you realize that you can not eat money."

I can still remember the shock I experienced the first time I ate in a Florida restaurant and saw fried dolphin on the menu.

Quite some time later someone explained to me that the dolphin (edible) was a true fish and that the charming friendly mammals which we all adore are incorrectly called dolphins and should more correctly be called porpoises.
