This is FRESH AIR. I'm Terry Gross. My guest, Robert Kagan, used to describe Donald Trump as antiliberal. Then he upped it to authoritarian, and now Kagan says that Trump is getting close to becoming a dictator. Kagan writes, "President Trump has managed in just one year to destroy the American order that was and has weakened America's ability to protect its interests in the world that will be. Americans thought defending the liberal world order was too expensive. Wait until they start paying for what comes next," unquote.

We're going to talk about that and Trump's domestic violations of norms, laws and the Constitution, including the ICE immigration crackdowns in cities like Minneapolis. Kagan says some of the Trump administration policies are rooted in the history of Christian white supremacy.

Robert Kagan is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, a contributing writer at The Atlantic, a former longtime Washington Post columnist, a former Republican and the author of many books. The paperback edition of his latest book is titled Rebellion: Donald Trump And The Antiliberal Tradition In America. We recorded our interview yesterday.

All the indications are that Trump is moving towards a dictatorship ~he seems oblivious to the legal and constitutional norms and blethers and contradicts and takes heed of few advisers

Kagan was (and presumably still is) a prominent conservative writer.

Presumably that's why he's no longer a Republican.

These are just a few of Trump's disqualifiers that he uses everyday.
That way when he is lying these add on phrases implies he is kidding/telling the truth that he is lying. This is some pretty convoluted nonsense.


The dehumanization policy inside ICE is standard operating procedure and insideously deliberate. INSTEAD of refering to people as; citizens, immigrants, suspects, perps, adults or children...
They call ALL detainees BODIES.

The Kennedy Memorial performing arts center looks across the river at Arlington National Cemetery, where Kennedy is buried with the eternal flame, and where the fallen from the Civil War through today are buried.

Now, the landlord and chief will dismantle the Kennedy Memorial for years to come. When and if it returns, I'm sure the name change will reflect the non-serving landlord and minimize mention of the PT 109 captain. The landlord wants two more name changes in NYC of a major tunnel and airport. I would not want a restroom named after the Toddler of all time.

Trump says he will only restore funding to the work on the tunnel under the Hudson between NY and NJ of they agree to name more big landmarks after him. As Kara Swisher noted "It seems that his parents didn't hug him often enough when he was a child."

”It’s happening fast, but also just slow enough that people aren’t connecting the dots. And that’s exactly how it happened in the 1930s in Germany. Dachau opened in March 1933, just weeks after Hitler became chancellor. But those early camps were for political prisoners, dissidents, communists, anyone who pushed back. It took eight years to get from Dachau to the gas chambers. Eight years of dehumanizing specific groups, of propaganda, police violence, and the control of information.
