Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Jul 04 - 02:03 AM Well, Sol - I corrected your typo - AND your typing - but I couldn't find your song. Click here for "The Seine," by calypso songwriter Irving Burgess. I don't think that's the one you're looking for. This thread (click) is about yet another Seine song. My memory hears "You will find your love in Paris, when you walk along the Seine" as a spoken introduction to the Burgess song, but I'm sure if that's a true memory or just imagination. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 05 Jul 04 - 07:19 PM Hi Joe, Thanks for correcting thr typo. The 2 links you provided did not yield the song I wanted. However, I can give you another clue. The ending of the chorus goes as follows: "There's an old romantic legened that goes back for many a year When you loose your love in Paris, then the Seine is full of tears." I hope that this will jog someone's memory. SOL ZELLER |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine From: Once Famous Date: 05 Jul 04 - 07:34 PM Rabbi-Sol The Kingston Trio recorded the Irving Burgess song.: The Seine One night along the river at St. Germain de Pre, I first met my beloved at a small sidewalk café. We walked along the river, the shadows passing by but we only saw each other, the shining water and the sky. Chorus: The Seine, the Seine, when will I again meet her there, greet her there on the moonlit banks of the Seine? Standing there across the river, mid sound of horn and tram, in all her quiet beauty, the cathedral Notre Dame, And as we passed beside her, I said a little prayer that when this dream was over, I'd awake and find you there. Chorus We walked along the river, 'till dawn was coming nigh. Beneath the Eiffel Tower we said our last good-bye. There on that splendid morning, I left you all in tears and the beauty of that hour will shine within my through the years Chorus The Seine, the Seine, when will I again meet her there on the Seine?^^^ |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 05 Jul 04 - 07:56 PM Martin, The Burgess song is not the one. I am positive that the words I quoted in my 2 posts appear in this song. I have heard my song sung on TV many times both in English and French back in the 1960s. SOL ZELLER |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Jul 04 - 08:01 PM Sol, I KNOW I've heard that song many times, but I just can't remember where it's from. Maybe Gigi, Happy Face, Silk Stockings, American in Paris or another of those romantic musicals set in France. Dean Martin, Doris Day, Chevalier, and the Four Preps did recordings about the Seine - but I don't have any of them. Oh, I'm so frustrated.... -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine From: Amos Date: 05 Jul 04 - 08:18 PM I believe the song is called "You will find Your Love in Paris By the River Seine" and it was recorded, among others, by Maurice Chevalier: E/SE-3703P - Maurice Chevalier "Today" - Maurice Chevalier [1958].../You Will Find Your Love In Paris (By The River Seine) Hope this helps, haven't been able to find the lyrics. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 06 Jul 04 - 04:43 PM The Chevalier song is the one that I am looking for. However, I do not think that he was the author. As far as I know, he never wrote his own songs. I am still looking for the lyrics and the name of the author. I have searched through over 100 Google pages without any results. I am sure that someone out there in Mudcatland will come up with someting. SOL ZELLER |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Jul 04 - 10:21 PM Hi, Sol - I added (Chevalier) to the thread title, hoping maybe that will catch somebody's attention. This one really bugs me, because I'm sure I've heard it. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 06 Jul 04 - 11:11 PM It is on lp "Today" by Chevalier, ESE-3703, but unless it is in one of the boxes, it is not available on a current cd. It seems to have been film music, so prob. a Hollywood composer. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 06 Jul 04 - 11:19 PM The last time I heard this song was on the Lawrence Welk Show, done as a duet by Dick Dale & Dianne Lennon. Before that I heard it done by Dean Martin and Dina Shore. The original words may have been in French, with a singable translation in English. SOL ZELLER |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Jul 04 - 01:31 AM Amos posted the French lyrics to another song, "La Seine." I moved his post to the existing thread on that song (click). Hope that's OK, Amos. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 07 Jul 04 - 02:01 AM Amos, www.paroles.net, the giant French lyrics site, lists the song as "La Seine," and gives the lyrics you posted (same authors and date) as sung by Jacqueline François, and also gives it as sung by Anny Gould. They seem the same at first glance. Nice song. I have tried a lot of possibilities, but can't find in French either half of "You will find your love in Paris /by the river Seine." I'll leave it all to you. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Ferrara Date: 07 Jul 04 - 12:48 PM Is is possible that Chevalier was singing a translation of the "flowing" song? Translated songs have many versions sometimes. That doesn't help much though, does it? - Rita F |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 07 Jul 04 - 08:06 PM I did an ACE search on the ASCAP website. The original song was written in French by Guy Pierre M.L. Lafarge and Monod Flavien. The English lyrics were written by Gordon Mack. The copyrite is held by Remick Music Corp., which apparently is a division of Warner Brothers Studios in California. Now, at least we know who wrote the song. The next step is to get our hands on the lyrics. Thank you Anglo, but I no longer have any device capable of playing a 45 RPM disc. SOL ZELLER |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Anglo Date: 07 Jul 04 - 08:33 PM OK. Different ways to spend money. The French sheet music "La Seine, copyright 1948, by Glavien Monod & Guy LaFrarge" [sic] is in a lot currently up on eBay at Item number: 3734519218. Nearly 4 days to go and no bids yet (minimum bid $1.99). No luck with English words though, sorry. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 07 Jul 04 - 09:31 PM As noted previously, both the French words (posted by Amos) and a translation of the Monod-Lafarge "La Seine" are at thread 5602: La Seine Copyright to French lyrics originally in 1948 to Warner Chappell. The sheet music at EBay is in French. The French lyrics used by two singers also are at paroles.net, search under 'Titres': Paroles |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Jul 04 - 11:09 PM Careful, Sol - I'm pretty certain the LaFarge song (click) is not the one you want. Let's keep looking for the Chevalier one. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 08 Jul 04 - 12:38 PM Joe, I think that LaFarge wrote more than one song about the Seine, just like Pete Seeger has written more than one song about the Hudson. That is the impression that I have gotten from the ASCAP site. His music has apparently been used as background scores for Hollywood productions that have Paris as their locale. However, it was Gordon Mack who is credited with the singable English lyrics to the song that I want, and that is where I am now focusing my efforts to find them. SOL ZELLER |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 08 Jul 04 - 03:17 PM I apparently misread the ASCAP site. The composer is Mack Gordon, not Gordon Mack. Mack Gordon was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1904 as Morris Gittler, and moved to NYC in 1908. He died in 1996. He wrote lyrics and musical scores for over 1,000 films, was nominated for 7 Oscars, and won the Academy award once. If I can find out which film the song was written for, I will be one step closer to the lyrics. SOL ZELLER |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Once Famous Date: 08 Jul 04 - 03:27 PM Rabbi-Sol, you mentioned that you no longer have any way to play a 45 rpm disk. You might be able to turn up an old "record player" cheap at some garage sale. Collecting 45's is I have found an interesting way to accumulate songs for reference. I have an old mid 1960s Rock-ola juke box that I have loved for many years. Just imagine having 80 records all of your choosing available to hear at any time! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 09 Jul 04 - 05:24 PM The song that Amos posted on the thread "Another Seine Song" (LaFarge), is the song I wanted in French. It is sung to the same exact melody as the one with the English lyrics that I am looking for, which Mack Gordon wrote. Although both songs are sung to the same tune, the English lyrics are NOT a translation of the French lyrics. SOL ZELLER |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Jul 04 - 03:09 PM Hi, Sol - the mention of Mack Gordon (1904-1959) makes this quest infinitely more interesting. He wrote "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," "I've Got a Gal in Kalamazoo," "Serenade in Blue," "There Will Never Be Another You," and "You Make Me Feel So Young." I have lyrics for all of those, but still can't find "Seine." -Joe Offer, Still Frustrated- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 10 Jul 04 - 11:44 PM I think I now remember the words to the first stanza (after 45 years). You will find your love in Paris When you walk along the Seine You'll Romance your love in Paris By the lovely River Seine There's an old romantic legend that Goes back for hundreds of years When you lose your love in Paris Then the Seine is full of tears Can somebody now come up with the words to the second stanza ? SOL ZELLER |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Jul 04 - 11:59 PM That sounds right to me, Sol - not that I can remember the second verse. I can hear a melody in my memory - I wonder if it's the right one. I think we probably heard it on the Patti Page recording. I couldn't find a copy of it available on CD - or I'd have bought it. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: Lyr Add: YOU WILL FIND YOUR LOVE IN PARIS From: GUEST,comptrng@yahoo.com Date: 04 Dec 05 - 10:25 AM Dear Sol Zeller, I was searching through Google looking for music/chords for "The River Seine" and came across this site. I also did not know the exact title, author, etc. I sang this song on stage in Jr. High School (1960's)for a French class and have since lost the sheet music. I remember the words (as I sang them)and since it appears that you are still frequenting this site, I will list them here. --By the way, may I ask where you first heard of this song and why you're interested in it? LP ~~~ I heard a love song in Paris It's one I shall never forget Somehow my memories cling to The theme of that warm chauconette It's one that Pariesienne lovers sing to their mademoiselles It's more than a tune it's a legend And here is the story it tells: You will find your love in Paris When you walk along the Seine You will fall in love in Paris It's a river of champagne There's an old romantic legend That's been told for hundreds of years When you lose your love in Paris Then the Seine is filled with River, river, river of tears |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 04 Dec 05 - 11:05 PM Hi Guest, I am perhaps a little older than you. I graduated high school in 1959. I first heard this song done by the late Dinah Shore on her weekly TV show back in the 1950s. I loved the music very much. In addition my mother was a big fan of Maurice Chevalier so that piqued my interest even more. I have since discovered a different version of this song as sung in the UK. It is the same tune, about the same subject matter, but has different words. It has about 5 stanzas. I believe that it originated in France and was translated into English. I have it in the form of a midi-karaoke file which was sequenced by Dr.James Pitt-Payne & Bunty Pritcard Jones of the UK. If you wish, I can e-mail the file to you and to anyone else on this forum who would be interested. You will need a midi-karaoke player such as VanBasco, which can be dowloaded from the web free of charge, to play and view it. SOL ZELLER |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: GUEST Date: 03 Oct 06 - 03:50 PM did anyone EVER find who wrote/sang this song? My aunt had a 45 record of this when I was a child and I used to listen to it over and over. I was thinking it was Patti Page but it might possibly have been Doris Day. I can hear the woman singer's voice in my head so clear! It's driving me nuts! katykw |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: GUEST Date: 03 Oct 06 - 08:48 PM I heard it all the time on "Your Hit Parade" sing by either Dorothy Collins or Giselle MacKenzie. I believe it was Doris Day and not Patti Page who did the original recording. SOL ZELLER |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Jim Dixon Date: 05 Oct 06 - 02:03 AM ASCAP says YOU WILL FIND YOUR LOVE IN PARIS was written by Mack Gordon, Guy Lafarge, and Flavien Monod. It also gives LA SEINE and RIVER SEINE as alternate titles. (Maybe Flavien Monod was author of the French lyrics?) The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) says LA SEINE was used in the 2002 film "The Quiet American." (It doesn't appear in the soundtrack album, though.) It gives this description:
Composed by Guy Lafarge / Flavien Monod (c) 1948 Société des Editions Royalty (assigned to Editions et Productions Théatrales Chappell) Used by permission of Warner / Chappell Music Australia Pty Ltd. All rights reserved Performed by Christian Dollslager Alex Alstone, on MGM 30580, around 1946 to 1952. David Rose and His Orchestra with vocalist Beryl Davis, on MGM 30830. On that recording, "Lafarge-Roberts-Holt" are credited as songwriters. Guy Lombardo and His Orchestra, on Decca 28925, in 1949. Guy Lombardo and His Orchestra, on Decca 24765, in 1949. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Jim Dixon Date: 06 Oct 06 - 03:22 AM Allmusic.com lists recordings of THE RIVER SEINE by Doris Day, Joni James, Gisele MacKenzie, Dean Martin, Jane Morgan & the Troubadors, The Three Sounds, The Three Suns, and Roger Williams. Many of these are available as CDs, and the web site has sound samples. There is considerable variation in the way they show authorship/composer credits, for example: "Alan Holt, Guy Lafarge, Flavien Monod, Allan Roberts" "Guy Lafarge, Flavien Monod" "Holt, D., Guy Lafarge, Warren Roberts" "Alan Holt, Guy Lafarge, Allan Roberts" "Alan Holt, Jack Laforge, Warren Roberts" "Guy Lafarge, Monade" Obviously, there are some mere mistakes. (I think they are the mistakes of the record publishers, who are sometimes quite careless. I think Allmusic.com, in most cases, merely reports information as given by the record publishers, and doesn't do its own independent fact checking.) In some cases, they may be omitting the name(s) of the lyricist(s) because the recording in question is instrumental only. Also, there could be more than one version out there—more than one English translation, for example. But there does seem to be one underlying song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 21 Jan 08 - 02:46 PM I am happy to report that I now have in my possession the complete song " The Seine" in midi-karaoke format. There are 3 stanzas and 3 choruses. Each chorus has different words pertaining to the previous stanza. The song describes a love affair between the Seine River and the City of Paris. I wish to thank my friends, Ms. Bunty Pritchard-Jones and Dr. James Pitt-Payne, both from the UK, for their scholarly research and the resulting file. Since I can not post the file directly to mudcat I will e-mail it to Joe Offer and see if he can establish a blue link. I will also e-mail it to anyone who asks for it if you PM me with your e-mail address. SOL |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: GUEST,Srimita Date: 29 May 14 - 10:39 PM YOU WILL FIND YOUR LOVE (IN PARIS) Mack Gordon / LaFarge as recorded by Patti Page with Vic Schoen & his Orchestra released September 1958 I heard a love song in Paris, One I will never forget. Somehow my memory clings to The theme of this warm chansonette. One that Parisian lovers Sing to their mademoiselles, It's more than a tune, it's a legend, And here is the story it tells. You will find your love in Paris When you walk along the Seine. When you fall in love in Paris, It's a river of champagne! There's an old romantic legend that's Been told for hundreds of years; When you lose your love in Paris, Then the Seine is filled with tears! You will find your love in Paris When you walk along the Seine. When you fall in love in Paris, It's a river of champagne! Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The River Seine (Chevalier) From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 20 Jul 21 - 04:34 PM Here is the original version that appears on a karaoke created by Dr. James Pitt-Payne of London, UK. It was too long for the America music market which limited you to a 3 minute recording disc. That is why Patti Page, Dean Martin, Joni James, Dinah Shore, and others who recorded this song had to change and shorten the lyrics. Also in the original version that I am posting here each chorus is different and continues the narrative of the main stanzas. The Seine The Seine when she starts on her travels Lazily flows from her source Slowly her length unravels Twisting and turning her course Deep in the country she tarries Not knowing which way to go Till the enchantment of Paris Beckons her swiftly to flow Chorus: She goes flowing, flowing, flowing, Through the open countryside For she's going, going, going, To meet Paris as a bride And she's cooing, cooing, cooing, cooing, Like the murmuring doves For the Seine has gone a wooing And it's Paris that she loves On reaching her Paris she lingers Happily keeping her tryst Twinning each bridge with her fingers Staying a while to be kissed Close to her Paris she presses Seeking her love to entwine Showering with gentle caresses Quays that are laden with wine Chorus: She goes singing, singing, singing, She's as happy as a bride And She's clinging, clinging, clinging, To the quays on either side She goes winding, winding, winding, winding Dizzy now in her bed For the River Seine is finding That her love goes to her head In Paris she lingers forever But such delights can not be Her way and his have to sever She must go on to the sea Softly each island she touches Slow and unwilling her pace Gently at Paris she clutches In a last moving embrace Chorus: She goes gladly, gladly, gladly, While her love is in her arms And then sadly, sadly, sadly, As she leaves the city's charms And she carries, carries, carries, carries, Sweet regrets in her mind For the Seine's in love with Paris And she's left her love behind |
