I've had to get a Home Computer for work (in Britain). To get Internet Access (required for work), I got a BT "pay as you go" Compact Disc. When I load it into the machine, and follow the "prompts", I do hear the squeaks and chirps as the ?modem dials the ?ISP, but then there's a message that "The remote computer disconnected". Now, rather than go to the BT "Helpline" which will charge me ten shillings a minute for maybe a half-hour call, does anyone know what's a likely cause of this problem, so I can try to sort it out myself? I can find out details of Computer from the machine itself, I'm sure.

Perhaps the remote computer is not accepting calls.
Perhaps problems with you phone line are causing the remote computer to disconnect.
Either problem will require you to speak to someone at the remote computer end.

Could be that your login or password is incorrect (at your end) or is otherwise not recognised by the server.
Assuming that that is OK, then a noisy phone line may be the problem. Check your dial-up settings and look for a checkbox labelled "always connect at this speed" or similar and make sure it is un-checked.
It sounds as though the modem is fine but check the phone number it is dialling too.

Thanks so far; I'd assumed the "remote computer" (from BT's point of view) was mine? So does it mean that it's actually BT that's disconnecting (British Telecom)? No problems with Telephone Line. I've been going through the various bits of Programs etc., and I'll certainly make sure that I un-check the "always connect at this speed" one. I'll also get in touch with BT and see about what number to dial, although it seems from the Disc supplied that this instructuin is given automatically. Fingers crossed,
GUEST
