Subject: BS: Lovely Day in London! From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 17 Oct 11 - 02:32 PM Just to balance the record, THIS time we had a super day up in London. Went to the Tower, and it's just as excellent as I remember it from the sixties. Beefeaters' guided talks funny and helpful, well-designed displays, you can go out and come back in on the same ticket. Took a boat trip down the Thames, and this is by far the best way to see the sights. I think the lack of traffic (it was Saturday) made a huge difference. Even the commentary on the boat was hilarious. "And coming up on the right we have the Monument, Christopher Wren's last erection." "Now you can see the Tate Modern. No entrance fee, the rubbish in there isn't worth paying for." So I've changed my opinion, London is OKAY! |

Subject: RE: BS: Lovely Day in London! From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 18 Oct 11 - 06:33 AM Gnu, the Yeomen were extrememly funny. But inside the church of St Peter ad Vincula, we learned that 1500 (!) decapitated bodies of execution and torture victims were found in Victorian times, just stuffed under the flagstones. The Beefeater then said, in all seriousness, that a colleague of his was checking the church at the end of the tourist day before locking up, and a shadowy figure rose up in front of the altar and drifted over to the left, disappearing through the wall! I was quite scared by this, and had a nightmare that night. We stayed behind a bit and paid our respects to Anne Boleyn and little Catherine Howard, whose bodies are still there in front of the altar. Weird and sinister! |
