WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Al Qaeda may be planning "spectacular attacks" in the United States that will cause "mass casualties" and "severe damage" to the economy, according to a federal law enforcement bulletin.

Even so, the warnings have not caused the Homeland Security threat level to be increased from yellow, or elevated risk, and FBI officials said there is no new intelligence that led to the strong wording of the bulletin.

Which rather begs the question, what sort of attack will it take to ramp us up to red alert, then?


Is anyone else wondering...if they give enough warnings, sooner or later one of the warnings may actually coincide with an actual attack? Or would that be a statistical impossibility?

Bush et al are fast becoming the embodiment of Chicken Little or the Little Boy Who Cried Wolf. INstead of leaving it at "there is a constant threat of terrorism, be careful" they keep up the vague possible-for-sure-maybe alerts in order to keep everyone on edge and distracted while they steal our civil liberties, etc.

Well, I for one think the least they could do is give us a hint of where mass casualties might occur, so we could avoid the area. The spectacular attack will be televised eventually, and as to the economy, someone should let Bush's economic advisors know, the severe damage to the economy apparently already happened!

While we're hunkering down and peering out from under the bed, anticipating terrorist acts from abroad, Bush is insisting that the Senate vote immediately on the Homeland Security Act. This is a 484 page law that the Senate got about forty-eight hours ago. The Senate is being asked to vote on it--NOW--before any of it has gone before committee or any of the Senators have had a chance to read it. Bush is also insisting that it be passed without amendments. And John M. Poindexter of Iran-Contra fame is being put in charge. Nice!!

The article goes on to say that "the danger of attack is growing because of increased "chatter" picked up through intelligence channels". This probably means that the government has detected more frequent incidences of the use of certain key words among the zillions of phone, fax and internet communications it monitors.

A little known fact is that the code-word that Osama's followers use to refer to a bomb is "Jacouzzi". This leads one to speculate that the communications responsible for this heightened sense of threat may have inadvertently come from this forum's very own Mudchat chatroom. In the interest of national and world security, we kindly request that Oakley et al use the term "hot tub" in future virtual drunken orgies.

As long as we all remember that terrorism is real. People do die.

Having said that (and most of you know whereof I write), I'd say that the idea of the relationship between warning and event being statistical rather than actual or predictive is unfortunately so possible it's scary, but it would have been nice had they warned us about the 9-11 possibility ahead of time, too. Would anybody have panicked?

There is a group of Mudcatters who are VERY angry at one of the guests this week, and seem to be hell bent on playing their flame warrior games.

I think none of us are under any illusions that the next terror strike could happen to any of us at any time. It would even be a fair bet to suggest that mudcatters along with members of every other community will be represented in the next casualty list. It could as well be me as you. What is important is to live all of our life as though it is about to end. A life truly lived is not wasted but a long life unlived is its own tragedy. Sooner rather than later these madmen will try again. I intend living life regardless of them. and yes Mary it is worth having children- they are the only possible future for all of humanity. to not have them 'just in case' is to surrender already.

I have no problem with people not finding the terror alert thing funny at all Michael. But I find it to be funny in a frightening way (like Bowling for Columbine), as do many others. The terror alert warning system has already become a parody of itself, as anyone can tell by tuning in to late night TV.

I find the high and mighty self righteousness about the seriousness of the terror alerts to be laughable. But that is me. Others are entitled to their opinions, but we don't need flame wars, just because we disagree. It is always an option for those who are easily offended by such subjects, not to read the thread, rather than use the thread as an excuse to go at a poster whose politics and opinions they disagree with.

But too late for any fun in this thread. The flame warriors have done their killjoy job on this thread. If you all want another "ain't it awful" hand wringing thread, it looks to me like you've got one.

I fail, for the life of me, to see anything humorous about the possibility of terrorist attacks. Canada making the list, even by default, is a tad humorous although they probably didn't get it. They're not noted for their sense of humor, the Canadians>
On another matter , Bluesmike, GUEST probably doesn't take it seriously because GUEST is anonymous, and- as we all know- someone who is anonymous can't be harmed.
