Subject: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: Bonzo3legs Date: 26 Apr 11 - 07:25 AM With the exception of Colgate Herbal which has almost a pleasant taste, and I have only found in Argentina, toothpaste tastes absolutely vile. Why is this? |

Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: GUEST,Suibhne Astray Date: 26 Apr 11 - 08:11 AM I like Euthymol but it's not much cop otherwise. Being tight-wads we get whatever's on offer at B&M bargains - right now it's some sort of Colgate jelly with bits in it, which isn't so very bad. Apparantly in my illiterate childhood I had a fondness for using Germolene, maybe accounts for why I like root beer. Is it true most dentists just use salt? Otherwise, I'm reminded of the old one from Newcastle, aimed at posh girls in general: she's so classy you could use her sh*te for toothpaste. Folk poetry at its finest... |

Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: Bill D Date: 26 Apr 11 - 10:58 AM I use Arm & Hammer baking soda/peroxide toothpaste, which is kinda neutral as to flavor....my wife prefers Tom's of Maine, which has a couple of minty flavors. I never think of NEEDING them to be tasty. Perhaps they make them only marginally tolerable in order to be sure they are not swallowed. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: Little Hawk Date: 26 Apr 11 - 11:48 AM Baking Soda is definitely the best...and the cheapest BY FAR. It tastes salty, and it does the job of cleaning your teeth and your mouth to perfection, kills the nasty stuff that attacks tooth enamel and gums. If you want a nice tasting toothpaste, however, try Tom's of Maine, fennel flavour. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: Musket Date: 26 Apr 11 - 12:07 PM Dunno about dentists using salt. They have a background in many aspects of healthcare in general so are aware of the hazards of too much salt in your system. Bears like the taste of toothpaste I believe. Ask one why? Baking soda is a good short term measure for decontaminating your teeth & gums and whitening them up, but a dentist friend says she always advises against it when asked for an opinion as prolonged use attacks the enamel itself, and can irritate the gums. Although some people have a higher resistance than others. (if your next drink is slightly acidic, it should help remove the residue too.) Only know this because I asked her recently, I don't like Corsodyl mouthwash so was looking for a toothpaste that has the same active ingredients. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: Little Hawk Date: 26 Apr 11 - 12:28 PM You don't get too much salt in your system if you swish it around in your mouth with water and then spit it back out. You have to swallow it to get too much of it in your system. The same goes for anything else that's in your toothpaste...it's not meant to be swallowed. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: GUEST,999 Date: 26 Apr 11 - 01:12 PM I do. Well it was SOME sort of tooth powder. Now, I just take out my uppers and sook 'em in a mild bleach solution and use Colgate's on the lowers. Mix THAT up with yer Brylcream and you'll find out what vile taste really means. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: VirginiaTam Date: 26 Apr 11 - 01:42 PM 999 - re Brylcream - not funny. A 4 year old can't read and the tubes in 1961 looked too much alike. Worse was the humiliation of having my parents and older brother laugh at me for crying about the horrible tasting mistake in my mouth. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: ClaireBear Date: 26 Apr 11 - 02:11 PM I use anything cinnamon-flavored. Not sickly-sweet minty-fresh if I can help it -- eew! I used to use one, about forever ago, called Barth's Sea-Gel. It was made with carrageen moss and, yes, mint, but what made that OK was that it was not sweetened at all. With anything. Just not sweet. I've never found another toothpaste like it. If you know of an unsweetened toothpaste, PLEASE let me know. I'd be SO happy! C |

Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: Little Robyn Date: 26 Apr 11 - 05:43 PM Years ago (1972)I found some toothpaste from Denmark, I think, called SMIKI. It was a light grey/opaque sort of gel and there was no hint of mint at all - probably baking soda more than anything. My first try was Yuck! But it removed all the gunge from everywhere without hard scrubbing and I didn't mind the flavour. But I haven't found anything like it since. Robyn |

Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: frogprince Date: 26 Apr 11 - 11:19 PM If it wasn't the Preparation H that Bonzo picked up, it may have been the athlete's foot cream. Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 27 Apr 11 - 03:48 AM I don't mind the minty taste to start the day but if I am staying at a guest house or hotel the minty taste in the mouth with orange juice and breakfast (which I wouldn't normally do at home that early) can be a bit of a shock to the system. The worst tasting toothpaste for me was the Punch and Judy children's toothpaste flavoured banana or strawberry. I haven't seen it around lately so I am assuming that it has either been taken off the market or changed slightly to discourage children from swallowing it which really is a good thing to do. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 27 Apr 11 - 05:12 AM I've been using an unflavoured toothpaste for at least 30 years. I wasn't keen on the horrible minty/menthol tastes around, so when I saw the generic looking 'Plain Toothpaste - No added flavour or colour. No sugar or artificial sweeteners' I bought it. I couldn't see why a tooth-cleaning paste needed sugar or sweeteners! And I still can't - especially all the fancy toothpastes around, especially those aimed at children. It must do a good job as dentists have never told me to get another paste. A few years back it wasn't available for about 6 months due to problems with the supplier - so I tried salt for a while until I found a "healthy" lemon-flavoured paste but it was odd cleaning my teeth with lemon & having a lingering taste of lemon in my mouth. Lemon is normally used for flavouring water! sandra Robyn, it's made in NZ |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: Little Robyn Date: 27 Apr 11 - 06:49 AM 'it's made in NZ' I'll have to have a look - in health shops presumably? I haven't seen anything like it in supermarkets. Robyn |

Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: GUEST Date: 27 Apr 11 - 02:59 PM Standard Colgate made in the is OK. But beware of the 99p shops or Poundland shops etc. that sell Colgate from South Africa or China - the contents are not EEC approved and they contain chemicals you wouldn't want to put into your mouth. Which reminds me that BA used to issue First and Club class passengers vanity bags with little tubes of toothpaste in - which apparently contained anti-freeze. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 27 Apr 11 - 03:13 PM I'm surprised at this, GUEST, as I would have thought every item sold in UK, from any source, must be controlled by strict rules and standards. I'm glad you brought this to my attention, as I like Colgate toothpaste, and would have been pleased to get some cheaper at Poundland or another bargain store. (I often wonder at the goods for sale in Lidl or Aldi, many have Arabic or Spanish packaging, I just hope they're pukka!) |

Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: Gurney Date: 27 Apr 11 - 08:15 PM I've been told that the abrasive in toothpaste is, or used to be, ground-up nutshells, and they don't taste too flash. So, they change the taste. My dentist once recommended a toothpast with vanilla flavour. I could't use it properly, it just disappeared down my gullet. I couldn't NOT eat it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 28 Apr 11 - 07:17 AM Could be so, Dave. I read that our taste buds change over time, and that's why people say, for example, "Sausages don't taste like they did when I was young." Also, I think toothbrushes should be renewed every month or so, they're quite a good breeding ground for nasty germs. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 28 Apr 11 - 09:56 AM There are other uses that you can put nasty tasting toothpaste to, it can double up as an abrasive scourer for sinks or for cleaning silver or jewellry, rinse well after and buff it up until shiny. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why does toothpaste taste so horrible? From: GUEST Date: 14 May 11 - 03:39 AM Poster is Bonzo3legs. Colgate Herbal Blanqueadora is the toothpaste for me. We brought a couple of 90g tubes back from Buenos Aires. This almost has a nice taste but seems to be completely unavailable in the UK. Perhaps it is sold in Spain, we will look in September. If anybody notices this being sold in the UK please let me know. |
