Subject: Online Events - current listings
From: Joe Offer
Date: 03 Aug 20 - 11:51 AM

There are lots of events happening online during this pandemic. I get a lot of event announcements by email and don't know where to put them. Let's use this thread as a place to announce them. Once the event date is past, I'll delete them.

Please feel to post notices for performances you think we'd enjoy. Be sure to include the URL (address) of the performance, even if you can't make it into a link.

Subject: Tom Lewis May 20
From: Joe Offer
Date: 05 May 21 - 07:22 PM

Falcon House Concerts Presents
Tom Lewis
Thursday, May 20
7:30 pm UK
2:30 pm USA east
11:30 am USA west

http://www.youtube.com/user/Tulip0852/live UPDATE = OCT 2021 VIDEO STILL ON YOUTUBE

Tom Lewis loves to sing. And he loves it when people sing along. His powerful voice easily reaches to the rafters and just seems to pull other voices up aloft with it. Known throughout the maritime music world for penning classics like A Sailor Ain’t a Sailor (The Last Shanty), Marching Inland, Sailor’s Prayer (the one where the dove has wings as sharp as razors), Tom is just as likely to belt out a traditional sea chantey pulled straight from Davy Jones locker. He’ll even tell you a story, and it might even be true!

Tom got hooked on sea music when he heard the likes of Louis Killen, Archie Fisher and Ewan McColl in his early folk club days. During his 23 years as a submariner in Her Majesty’s Navy, Tom never missed the chance to visit folk clubs, concerts and festivals, building a reputation that has spread across three continents. Add to his credit ten albums and a hefty songbook.

Like other Falcon events, we're suggesting a donation (£10–$15) to support the artist. Paypal.me/tulip0852

Next up: John Conolly Thursday, June 17
John Ward Trio, Thursday, July 15

Mark your calendars and stay tuned, Janie Meneely

From Joe Offer:
Janie and Rob are doing a wonderful job of these concerts. The Martin Carthy concert was Saturday, May 1, but the remaining concerts on the schedule are on Thursdays, all at 7:30 PM London time:
  • Tom Lewis, May 20
  • John Conolly, June 17
  • John Ward Trio, July 15.

I don't know of the John Ward Trio, but I have always dreamed of seeing Martin Carthy, Tom Lewis, and John Conolly in concert. I thought that John Conolly would be here in California in 2021, but the concert tour was cancelled.

As performers age and the cost of visas and such continues to increase, there's a good chance we won't get to see these wonderful performers in person in the U.S. I'm very thankful to Janie and Rob for introducing us to them online, but I'm sad because these online concerts may be my only opportunity.

All of these concerts and more are still available online at this link.

The UnNatural History of Cornwall Lecture Series - the story of the Pencarrow Hunt and Black John
presented by The Viktor Wynd Museum & The Last Tuesday Society

Thursday, 9 September 2021. 20:00 – 21:30 BST

"The Unnatural History of Cornwall - curated by Dr.Amy Hale brings stories of the weird and wonderful from Cornwall to a wider audience, with an emphasis on Cornish voices from the past and the present.

"Traditional ballads and the tunes that go with them can be quite separate entities that connect and part company as they travel through time. There is a sense in which both carry the stories and interpretations of the people and communities with which they engage. Indeed, these stories and meanings will often tell us more about these people and their social milieu than the origins of the tradition. During the course of its travels the story of the Pencarrow Hunt and Black John has connected with some interesting characters and provides the perfect study for an 'unnatural history'."

A specialist travel agency, "Every Thursday evening, [TanSuo Cultural Travel] offers a free seminar on a certain topic related to Chinese culture.....

"During the first half of our seminar, we'll be discussing the 3,000-year-long history of music in China and the way in which instruments were categorised according to Chinese tradition. This classification system is known as the Bayin (??) or 'Eight Sounds' and is based on the main material used to make the instruments, rather than the way in which the instrument is played.

"Throughout the rest of the seminar, we'll take a closer look at an instrument from each category and listen to clips of them being played. Alongside learning about several lesser-known Chinese instruments, you'll also have the opportunity to engage in a lively discussion at the end of our seminar and share your love of music."

PETER JOHNSON Memoir Celebration Saturday, September 18, 2021, 2-4pm (Eastern time, USA)

Join us on Zoom or watch the livestream on our Folk Song Society of Greater Boston page.

Clickable links to zoom and livestream video can be found at https://www.fssgb.org/fssconc.shtml#johnson2021

Please join us as we celebrate the publication of Peter Johnson’s long-awaited memoir, The Laughing Lesson, published by Peter E Randall Publisher. Peter is a long-time member of FSSGB, and is the founder of Living Folk Records and Concerts. We have tried to have this event in person, but circumstances have caused us to reschedule it several times now - so Zoom it is!

The event will feature music - I'll sing a few songs, Lori Fassman will sing a few, and we'll have some other special guests as well. There will be plenty of opportunities to sing along! Peter will do some readings from his book, and that's always so entertaining. It's going to be a fun afternoon, and I hope you can join us.

Peter is a singer, concert promoter, record producer, writer, traveler, prankster, husband, father, and a fixture of the Cambridge music scene for the last fifty years. He is a member of the family that started, and still manages, Fidelity Investments. As the founder of Living Folk Records and Concerts, he introduced a number of traditional musicians from Ireland and the British Isles to North American audiences, thereby shaping the trajectory of this important music genre as it gained a larger place in world music.

Piskies & Pobel Vean: Cornwall's Capricious Little Folk

"The Cornish piskie is arguably one of the most well-known creatures of British folklore. They’re often portrayed as cheeky and mischievous but ultimately harmless. You can find them on charm bracelets and tourist souvenirs when visiting Cornwall. You can even spot them in children’s pop culture like Harry Potter. But Cornwall’s fascination with the Pobel Vean, the little folk, is not always so winsome. There are many types of piskies in Cornwall: those in rags who dance merrily on the moors, those who conjure up storms to protect their treasure, those who dwell in the darkest places underground and those who steal away children. Like the sea itself, that surrounds Cornwall on three sides, the folklore of this land is capricious. Piskies are capable of helping humans and also causing them great harm. So, let us explore the Cornish Pobel Vean, just how harmless are they really?"

Animal Transformations: Selkies, Werewolves and Witch-Hares – Dr Larrington
presented by The Viktor Wynd Museum & The Last Tuesday Society

"Join Professor Carolyne Larrington on an exploration of the strange folkloric world of animal transformations. From selkies – seal creatures caught between the pull of the human and maritime worlds – to the shape-shifting werewolves of the Middle Ages. Or the rather less threatening witch-hares, a common transformation beloved of witches – often undertaken, it is said, merely in order to steal milk from a neighbour’s cow... These complex stories speak to us of issues of power and control, and of how we look at the female body and issues of gender, enabling us to think about and question contemporary ideas. ....

"Carolyne also writes on medievalism and folklore, in 2015 publishing The Land of the Green Man. A BBC Radio 4 series based on this was broadcast in 2015 and can be heard here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06b8vxv. With Dr Fay Hield of the University of Sheffield, she was Co-Investigator on an AHRC-funded research project 'Modern Fairies and Loathly Ladies'. This involves working with creative artists – musicians, poets, painters, photographers – to produce new mediations of tales from British folk traditions about fairies. Also in 2015, Carolyne wrote Winter is Coming: the Medieval World of Game of Thrones, exploring the historical inspiration behind the fantasy phenomenon. You can hear a short talk she gave at the Ashmolean Museum on the book at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjlxMT3Pt1o Her most recent book on Game of Thrones, All Men Must Die: Power and Passion in Game of Thrones was published in January this year."

ONGOING - DIFFERENT THEME EACH WEEK, DIFFERENT SINGER EVERY DAY From the FacebookMudcat fb announcements page:

Tune in at 12 Noon Eastern U.S. Time today [November 1, 2021], when Stephen Winick and I will be in our costumes for Día de Muertos season, hosting Juan Díes (on the right in the photo), who will be performing "La Bruja" on the first day of Archive Challenge Week on the Daily Antidote of Song. Juan performed the song at the Library of Congress with his group Sones de México ensemble in 2015. At the same time, he led a workshop in writing corridos, or Mexican ballads, and performed with the Poet Laureate, Juan Felipe Herrera (on the left in the photo), during Herrera's inaugural reading. Díes is performing the song as an "Archive Challenge," in which artists perform songs from the American Folklife Center Archive. Although the official Day of the Dead or Día de Muertos is tomorrow, in Mexico it's celebrated as a multi-day holiday including November 1. Join the fun at the link below!

24 NOVEMBER 2021 13.30-14.30 GMT
BOOKINGS CLOSE at 23.00 (GMT) on 23 November
This is a joint seminar by QUB Arts Management & Cultural Policy & Music Events at Queen's [University Belfast]

Just how “Irish” is traditional Irish music? In her recent book Trad Nation: Gender, Sexuality, and Race in Irish Traditional Music, Tes Slominski uses ethnography, oral history, and archival research to challenge the longstanding practice of using ethnic nationalism as a framework for understanding vernacular music traditions. Tes Slominski argues that ethnic nationalism hinders this music’s development today and is at odds with an increasingly multiethnic Ireland.
Following a short talk about her book, there will be a Q&A chaired by Dr Ioannis Tsioulakis

Tes Slominski is a music and sound scholar who studies music, identity, and nationalism in Ireland and in its diaspora. She recently published Trad Nation: Gender, Sexuality, and Race in Irish Traditional Music, and is co-editor (with Kimberly Francis) of the gender/sexuality revision of Oxford University Press’s Grove Music Online. She served as Secretary of the Society for Ethnomusicology’s board from 2019-2021 and is currently on the board of the Ward Irish Music Archive in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

A proposition of decolonial subjectivity through Bhawaiya folk songs of North Bengal
By Dr Nasrin Khandoker
Associate Professor, Department of Anthropology, Jahangirnagar University

Chair: Dr Richard David Williams, SOAS, University of London

Wednesday, 15 December 2021, 6.30 - 8.30 pm GMT

Zoom Session, organised by Brick Lane Circle

Nasrin’s ethnographic journey to examine the subversive possibilities to defy oppressive marital norms with Bangla folk songs has been embedded with her lived experience of being a Bengali woman. She was part of her research tracing the perils and pleasures of embodied sexual subjectivity through various Bangla social-cultural fields. The histories of Bengal were made by the political, religious and cultural encounter between British colonial mechanism and nationalist collective struggle of reconstructing the tradition of the Indian subcontinent.

Subject: Your House is an Orchestra - Tue 14 Dec
From: Felipa
Date: 13 Dec 21 - 07:57 AM

YOUR HOUSE IS AN ORCHESTRA
three hour long homemade instrument workshop, starts 7 pm Eastern time, 12 midnight UTC (GMT)
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/your-house-is-an-orchestra-tickets-223734053577

With the right touch - tapping, bowing, blowing, and shaking – anything from your kitchen cupboard, closet, or garage can sound beautiful. Glass, plastic, rubber, aluminum, stainless steel – all take on the breath of life in our hands. Mark [Sepic] will also demonstrate the building of very simple musical instruments with common materials, ie: steel drums -(tin cans, “tuned” with a hammer), marimbas, (broken hockey sticks), thumb pianos - (popsicle sticks and clamps), gongs – (tin cans taped together) and banjos– (Plastic "take out" containers and rubber bands).

ABOUT the ARTIST

Mark Sepic - Musician, Sound Sculptor

Mark Sepic is an internationally recognized guitarist/composer, whose virtuoso finger-style guitar, appealing vocal style, impeccable taste, child-like sense of play and some electronic loop-wizardry make his concerts irresistible joy-ride into the magic of music. His projects have been featured in thirteen consecutive Toronto Jazz Festivals and have taken him abroad to Germany, Cuba, and Singapore.

“But wait – there’s more!”

A passionate environmentalist, Mark's "Junkestra" program, a hands-on wonderland of recycling, integrates sports, music, and art, celebrating the musical potential of everyday things. In schools, galleries and festivals throughout Ontario, Mark has helped Canadians recycle over 250,000 items, giving tin cans, toilet paper rolls and plastic jars a musical afterlife as drums, kazoos and maracas. Larger items – pots, pans, plumbing and yes, even the kitchen sink, become sound sculptures, 12 of which dot the Ontario landscape, from Toronto and Hamilton to Barry's Bay and Moose Factory.

One person who has been brightening Saturday evenings worldwide with his short concerts is Scottish musician Dougie Maclean. He is now up to concert no 117 at one per week. Most of these are free, though he does the occasional longer one for a modest fee. And you can still see most of the past episodes, I think. The platforms used are via his Facebook page and YouTube, and usually start at 9pm UK time.
He should have been doing a live concert in Edinburgh's Greyfriars Kirk last Friday evening, as part of the Hogmanay celebrations but this was cancelled owing to the Covid situation, so kind-hearted Dougie did a free online concert from his own studio at Butterstone in Perthshire, starting shortly before midnight and bringing us into 2022.
Here's a link to the most recent one (Hogmanay): he starts talking at 3'57"
Dougie Maclean Concerts

Then there is fabulous musician Tim Edey who has been doing a lot of Saturday evenings too - his so-called "Sleeping Tunes" sessions. Also on both Facebook and YouTube and usually start about 10pm UK time, and sometimes go on well after midnight! Also an appreciative international audience including many fellow professionals. An absolute maestro on both guitar and melodeon, and sometimes we get the occasional song from him, or from his wife Isobel Crowe, who has a lovely voice. (And his tech has improved a lot from the early days when he was the victim of poor broadband connection
Here's a link to his most recent session, but again you can access past sessions on YouTube also:

Perfect song for January 6
It's called
"January 6th," a hard-hitting Blues by Guitar Goddess Elly Wininger,

I’m also going to be listening on Sunday, January 23 when Elly teams up with Roots Guitarist Extraordinaire, Johnny Harper, in a free, online FSGW Sunday Concert. You can register to get the concert link

I’d known from previous Getaways that Johnny Harper was an awe-inspiring guitarist, but I hadn’t heard Elly until the last Fall’s Getaway and I was blown away! (“Blown Away at the Getaway,” there’s a song in there!) Here’s a link to Johnny's videos, so you can get a glimmer of the fantastic concert that's coming our way! https://www.johnnyharper.net/audio-video

Subject: Zoe Mulford Mar 19 STILL UP ON YOUTUBE
From: Felipa
Date: 14 Mar 22 - 11:41 AM

Falcon House Concert
https://www.youtube.com/user/Tulip0852/live

An Evening with Zoe Mulford Saturday, March 19   8-9 pm (UK) (4pm U.S. east coast; 1pm U.S. west coast—note the time change!!!)

Our upcoming live video broadcast will feature American artist Zoe Mulford who, lucky for us, is currently living in Manchester (UK). This is an exceptional opportunity to hear an accomplished writer and performer whose work has been recorded by the likes of Joan Baez and the Kronos Quartet, and voted 2018 song of the year by Folk Alliance International. Read on!

ABOUT THE ARTIST: It’s hard to put a ring around Zoe Mulford. Her music making is extraordinary. From her earliest recordings to her more recent on-line collaborations, her melodies and lyrics resonate with truthful simplicity and a keen awareness of the “human condition” whether she’s recalling an afternoon of berry picking or reminding us that life’s too short to fold underwear.

Zoe is perhaps best-known these days as the writer of The President Sang Amazing Grace (check out Joan Baez’s Whistle Down the Wind album). The song tells the story of the 2015 attack on a prayer circle at the Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, and the subsequent memorial service at which President Obama, when he rose to speak, sang Amazing Grace instead. (Tear jerker alert!)

But Zoe has nearly a zillion other brilliant songs to her credit. It isn’t naval gazing stuff, but anecdotes of life observed (Our Lady of the Highway) or pearls of wisdom (Life’s Too Short to Fold Underwear) or heartfelt admonishments (Answer the Knock at the Door). Her most recent enterprise was a recording of Songs Stay Sung with the U.S. quartet Windborne. You can listen to some of these and more at her website: zoemulford.com

... [for a quick sampling of Zoe's work, listen to:]

https://youtu.be/2qdB1EypJFU My President Sang Amazing Grace
https://youtu.be/kCt9WY76l3k One Damn Thing
https://youtu.be/ZAFQoBxHzMQ Zoe washes her hands ... ... GETTING TO THE CONCERT:

Before the concert is slated to begin, paste the link (below) into your computer browser (the channel goes “live” 15 minutes before showtime). Anyone can watch a YouTube livestream, but if you want to make comments or join in the chat (visible on the side of the screen) you will need a YouTube or Google login (people with gmail accounts are automatically logged in to Google).

As per usual with concerts of this kind, the proverbial tip jar makes it easy for those who wish to make a contribution to the artist (£8–$10/person suggested). It will scroll along the bottom of the computer screen, but here it is if you’d like to toss in something in advance: paypal.me/tulip0852 (if you don’t have a PayPal account, you can just sign onto paypal.com as a guest and send to Rob at tulip0852.com).

Please join us for what will be a very special and intimate evening. The blessing of a YouTube concert, of course, is that the show will be available on screen for at least 48 hours after the initial viewing. Tune in when you can. Tune in again.

Join the Western North Carolina Historical Association (WNCHA) Thursday, July 28 at 6pm as for this live Zoom webinar exploring the musical legacy of Bascom Lamar Lunsford. This even will also be recorded.

Lunsford was born in 1882 in Madison County, North Carolina, home to Cecil Sharp’s “nest of singing birds.” He was both a traditional musician and a collector of “folk” music. He established the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival in Asheville in 1928; was recorded performing hundreds of tunes, songs, and dance calls; and collected thousands of song transcriptions – many of which are now housed in the Southern Appalachian Archives at Mars Hill University (also home to the annual Lunsford Festival). Lunsford’s work helped shape the public’s perception of Appalachian regional identity – in all of its nuance and complexity.

About the Presenter:

Leila Weinstein is the program coordinator of the Appalachian Studies Program and the Ramsey Center for Appalachian Studies at Mars Hill University, where she also directs the Lunsford Festival. She holds a master’s degree in Appalachian Studies with a concentration in culture and music.

Tickets: $5 for WNCHA members/ $10 for General Admission. We also have no-cost, community-funded tickets available. We want our events to be accessible to as many people as possible. If you are able please consider making a donation along with your ticket purchase. These donations are placed in our Community Fund, which allows us to offer tickets at no cost to those who would not be able to attend otherwise.

Viewing: Registrants will receive a Zoom link with which to view the program. It will also be recorded and later available on our website.
