Subject: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Folkiedave Date: 09 Nov 07 - 10:03 AM Sheffield Live, a community based FM station http://www.sheffieldlive.org/ began broadcasting on October 29th. Today from 10.00 am - 12 noon was its first folk show. It is intended this is will be a regular slot. It is available on 93.2 FM; live on the World Wide Web and as a podcast so there is no excuse for not listening. It will concentrate on music from the British Isles with an occasional foray into Europe to mainly because I love spanish pipers. Modesty would normally prevent me from mentioning the name of the presenter but I am desperate for a name for the programme. So please any ideas as to what the programme should be called will be gratefully received. Folk on Friday is fine and alliterative but the BBC used it. I don't mind avoiding the word folk (or even the word Friday). If you want to know what how the various definitions of folk fit in to the show take a listen to the podcast. It includes Last Night's Fun, Steeleye Span, Guichen Quartet, a long piece on the Watersons, Crucible, Glorystrokes, Hekety, Devil's Interval, Spiers and Boden, Jim Causely, Sharon Shannon etc etc. Kicks off with Brian Peters and ends with Bellowhead. I am also desperate for news of artists, their tours and records of course, especially those that visit Sheffield. PM for an address to send them or take a look at http://www.collectorsfolk.co.uk/where my home address is under "contacts". It'll take me a while to get up to speed but there will be interviews and news as well as records. I'll cover festival, folk clubs and sessions and any advice is welcome. It's a two hour show so there is plenty of time. I didn't warn people in advance for two reasons. I wasn't sure I could do it - still not - but with a couple of minor errors it seemed to go well. I had a listener or two - thanks Chris and Christine whoever/wherever you are - and a posh media person in the building for the Documentary Film Festival wondered why the station was playing Gregorian chants. It was the Watersons with the Souling Song. So there is still a job of education to be done. |

Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Folkiedave Date: 09 Nov 07 - 10:31 AM Nice name Richard - the radio station has only just got its FM licence - I'd rather the first thing I did for them was not help them to lose it!! Do you think they might not notice "Folk and You?" |

Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 15 Nov 07 - 11:31 AM I almost had a radio show once, I was going to name it "Folk'n'Good Music", it never actually transpired. The name is yours if you want to use it. I don't think I can actualy listen to your show though. I am still on dial up (it's all that is available in my part of semi-rural Ontario) The feed drops out every few seconds and the download bar currently indicates 2 % complete and 15 hours 20 min to go. Oh for the joys of High Speed, good luck anyhow. JohnB |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: tijuanatime Date: 15 Nov 07 - 02:08 PM I can't find the programme on the podcast page: it isn't in World Music, Sheffield Music or Indie Music. I did manage to listen to it last week, but only because I spotted it in the recent postings column. |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Folkiedave Date: 15 Nov 07 - 02:21 PM Hi tijuantime - and thanks for trying!! I don't actually have a name yet so they couldn't list it. There is a trick to it - go to "schedule" on the home page and then new podcasts which is above "Monday" This brings up the latest page. go down to the bottom and go "next page" That will bring a URL up with a number on the end. Change that to around 25. I am hoping to make the station web person make it easier - but giving the programme the name "Folk on Friday" should make it easier!! Thanks very much for listening to the first show. If you liked it please feel free to email the station!! If you didn't like it - then my name is Mike Harding and that was BBC2. |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Mysha Date: 15 Nov 07 - 04:21 PM Hi David, You're on in the backgroud now. You have a show Friday's on Sheffield radio station, and you're not calling it "Sheffield Friday"? Not a soccer fan, I take it. Oh, well, you could always be "The Grinder", I guess, or "The Apprentice". "Eyre Folk" might be somewhat misleading, but maybe you'd care to present "Folk for the Bright Side" or simply "The Bright Side of Folk"? Well, with the current program description, if nothing better comes along, there'll always be "Traditional Life". (Oh, and don't lean in a creaking chair while you're talking, and careful with the volume sliders.) Mysha |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Folkiedave Date: 15 Nov 07 - 04:30 PM The chairs are dreadful I agree - and I roll around. They are not strong enough - built for teenage disc jockeys I am afraid. I am followed by a wisp of a woman. Sorry but I am sill getting used to all this. The sliders are worked by someone else at the moment giving me - a newbie at this - chance to concentrate on speaking clearly and effectively!! As far as football is concerned I recognise two football teams in Sheffield - Sheffield United and Sheffield United Reserves. I actually go to watch both. Not that it is much fun at the moment. I would not use anything as a name that remotely referred to a day of the week between Tuesday and Thursday even obliquely. Sheer blind unthinking prejudice - 60+ years of socialisation I am afraid!! The other names are good though and I thank you for those. I have settled on the Folk on Friday name in the hopes the BBC claim it as their own!! Then I can whinge again at their lack of folk music on BBC! |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: r.padgett Date: 15 Nov 07 - 04:38 PM Bit of a turn up Dave! You seem to have dropped on a job ~ at your age too!! This Community radio station then, how long is it on the air for? I could n't listen to anything has there been a programme or will it be on next Friday (tomorrow?) under Folk on Friday, what was it b4? Ray |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Micca Date: 15 Nov 07 - 04:44 PM Dave, how about TGIF (Thank God its Folk)? |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Folkiedave Date: 15 Nov 07 - 05:58 PM Err...........massively unpaid job Ray and like all of those probably costing me money!! Like I am off the to AFO conference this weekend - at my own expense - though I shall not stay overnight!! So Petrol to Notingham and back at least. I have sent the name off now - so thanks for all previous and recent suggestions. Once the show is over I'll let you know how it went. The station is set for a long time Ray - I hope - but all programmes are subject to a three month review. Once Xmas is over I shall be asking for complimentary emails to be sent to the Station!!! If you look above in the reply to Tijuana it tells you how to get to the podcasts. And I shall be interviewing the Yorkshire Garland Group once I have learnt how!! Dave |

Dave I played "Hungry Army" and then later the two welsh tunes whose names I can't remember although one had wheatsheaf and one had Doncaster in the title. Sorry records are miles away! |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Folkiedave Date: 17 Nov 07 - 04:10 AM If anyone else is trying to listen to the podcast and can't - then would you be kind enough to take the time to email - ben@sheffieldlive.org because it looks so much better coming from an outsider. It'll be Monday before it is fixed though. Best regards, Dave |

Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: treewind Date: 20 Nov 07 - 06:01 AM I've had a a reply from Ben now: issue was caused by Dave's change of programme name, and he'll fix it today. He also said it was great music and well worth the wait! So 10/10 for speedy and clued-up response. Anahata |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Folkiedave Date: 20 Nov 07 - 06:16 AM Good old Ben - he is good!! He goes to Towersey so he is obviously a folkie. And sincere thanks! |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Giant Folk Eyeball (inactive) Date: 20 Nov 07 - 04:53 PM Just listened to an hour's worth of the show from the 16th whilst rubbing down my woodwork (which sounds like a euphemism but isn't). Excellent stuff. Really varied without moving away from the point. Looking forward to the next one! Cheers Nigel |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: treewind Date: 20 Nov 07 - 05:12 PM You can get the second half too - http://www.canstream.co.uk/sheffieldlive/audio/20071116110001.mp3 (simply change the 10 to 11 in the date-time coded filename) I'm listening now! Anahata |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Giant Folk Eyeball (inactive) Date: 20 Nov 07 - 06:40 PM Thanks for that. That will be tomorrow's treat. Then Chorlton Folk Club on Thursday. Oh, and Lymm Folk Club on 3rd April! Cheers Nigel |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 21 Nov 07 - 04:38 AM Finally managed to hear both halves (thanks for the URL editing info, Anahata). Keep up the good work, Dave; and do try to work in the occasional recording from traditional as well as revival singers. Meat too strong for the average listener, perhaps, but they may get a taste for it if it's slipped in discreetly. I also liked the mistakes; these are curiously endearing and should be retained as a feature. 'Chris in Walkley' misled you about that Pentangle song, though. It wasn't anything at all to do with 'The Liverbirds', but was the sig. tune for 'Take Three Girls'. |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Folkiedave Date: 21 Nov 07 - 04:59 AM Hi Malcolm - thanks for that. I would be really grateful if people would be kind enough to email ben@sheffieldlive and ask why the show is not more easily accessible i.e. listed along with the rest of the podcasts. I have Sam Larner (and Will Noble) this Friday, and I have Century of Song to take some tracks from. The problem is not that I don't want to play them - indeed I got a severe telling off from Sam Lee at the AFO conference, because I had only played that bit so far:-). I don't lack courage to play traditional singers - but I do lack CD's of traditional singers!! And "Chris in Walkley" - my regular listener - will be mentioned in this week's show. I think he was genuinely mistaken - rather than deliberately misleading. But I have to contradict you about the mistakes being endearing - not in the studio they aren't. But at least people know it is live!! |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Folkiedave Date: 21 Nov 07 - 05:22 AM Sorry that's ben@sheffieldlive.org - and please ask nicely! |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 21 Nov 07 - 05:26 AM Email me about cds of traditional singers; I can probably help you a bit there if you like. I didn't mean, of course, that Chris was deliberately winding you up; just that the info he provided was misleading (for which, I suppose, read 'wrong'). I've emailed Ben, suggesting that proper links would be both helpful and welcome. |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Banjiman Date: 21 Nov 07 - 05:27 AM Done Dave, By the way I'm listening to the bits of the show I hadn't heard previously while I am "working" from home this morning. I think you've got a really good balance...and most of the show shouldn't put "non-folkies" off too much. Cheers Paul |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Folkiedave Date: 21 Nov 07 - 09:50 AM It ain't perfect but the link is there and now works. At least you can link the the first hour of last week. Go to www.sheffieldlive.org > Schedule > newpodcasts > Thanks Goodness It's Folk. |

Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 22 Nov 07 - 05:34 AM A nice reply from Ben: Hi We'll soon be automating the categorization of all shows. At the moment it's down to David to log in and add his notes and category. I'll show him how to do this on Friday. His show is excellent and one of my favourites too. Ben |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Folkiedave Date: 27 Nov 07 - 04:58 AM Hi everyone, It looks as though my problems with getting the radio station on line have been solved thanks to Ben and his skills. It seems that the problem was the title "Thank Goodness It's Folk" since the machine does not do apostrophes. (We have a furniture shop locally that is similarly challenged by the English language - it has a slogan "This Weeks Managers Special Offer" - without any apostrophes). But I digress. That has now been sorted and certainly last week's show is now on-line. At the beginning is the Station Identity which has a lot of foreign languages - which goes on for a while - please be patient after that it gets better - I think!! I'll be putting the playlist on soon. The latest edition includes a special feature on Christy Moore, Breabach, Young Coppers, Sam Larner, Billy Pigg, Will Noble, Craig Morgan Robson, Flook, Bella Hardy, Julian Longden, Stocai, Pete Coe, Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas, etc. etc. etc.... To get the show as a podcast - www.sheffieldlive.org then> Schedule > then "Thanks Goodness It's Folk" down the bottom on the right hand side. |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Banjiman Date: 27 Nov 07 - 07:01 AM Dave, This does indeed work very well. I am halfway through the 2nd hour now, another excellent and varied show. Thanks for mentioning KFFC opening night...we did indeed sing until nearly 2.00am! Paul |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: GUEST Date: 27 Nov 07 - 10:48 AM Disgraceful - sitting up singing till that time. I hope you drank as well!! Thanks for listening. Dave |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Folkiedave Date: 30 Nov 07 - 11:53 AM Hi there, this weeks show included: The Boat Band,Kimber's Men,Demon Barbers,Crucible, Chris Woods, Arthur Howard, Lisa Knapp, Paul Scourfield, Notts Alliance, A. L. Lloyd, Dransfields, Tim Van Eyken, Coope Boyes Simpson, Martin Simpson, Carthy/Swarbrick, Glorystrokes. That is not the complete playlist but the artists I played. A bit shorter this week because I spent a long time discussing the EFDSS, English Dance and Song, the new CEO of the EFDSS and the concept of Englishness with Johnny Adams. Also there is an interview about the Thorpe Hesley Carols. It seems the podcast problems as were are no longer. Thanks for listening. Dave |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: treewind Date: 11 Dec 07 - 03:57 PM The navigation on the site is still far from perfect. I think I might make a little web page of archive links for the show, going straight to the MP3 podcast downloads (and including the second hour of each show). I'll let you know how I get on. Anahata |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: treewind Date: 11 Dec 07 - 04:48 PM Further to that (it didn't take as long as expected) try this: TGIF Archive list It's there for my own use as much as anything else Obviously there are some dates in the future whose links don't work yet but they should when their time comes. Shout at me if I forget to keep it up to date. Anahata |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Folkiedave Date: 11 Dec 07 - 06:06 PM Thanks AnAhata - brilliant. I have managed to add a play list which whilst it is not perfect is at getting there. This week's show will have a big feature on village pub carolling. Next week's show - the last before Xmas will have an interview with both Grenoside and Handsworth Sword teams as they prepare for their annual Boxing Day performances. |

Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Howard Kaplan Date: 10 Feb 08 - 11:10 AM There's an archiving mismatch at the moment. The pages which offer playable and downloadable past shows go back as far as 14 December 2007, but the links for December return "not found" errors. The earliest actually downloadable show is the one from 4 January 2008. |
Subject: RE: Review: New UK Folk Show on Local Radio From: Folkiedave Date: 10 Feb 08 - 02:43 PM It was a result of an early computer error when we started the show - it didn't have a name so was listed under "Folk Music" and when it eventually got a name, the computer (which I understand still has valves and is operated by steam) was confused. I do believe it is now fixed in that it worked fine this weekend. The archive is only supposed to last one month anyway. This week's show has an interview with Mike Waterson in the first half lasting 17 minutes. I was quite pleased with that. Dave |
