Just a quick word to note that Mudguard rang me in the office this morning to say he was about 10 miles east of Carmarthen. We arranged to rendezvous at 5 p.m. in Carmarthen. Anyway, he seems to have arrived this far OK (although somewhat bemused ... he thought I was a bloke!) Don't know what condition he'll be in by 5.00 as the heavens opened and we had one helluva rain storm about an hour after he rang.

We'll see if any of the advice we gave him about cycling in Britain / Wales has been of any use.

Jon and Bron ... be on the look-out!

sian

Gee, I remember doing that 25 years ago, cycling through all of South Wales until I hit St. David's I think, when the rain stopped. Rained the whole time -- sounds like you are having the same kind of summer. Wish I had had Mudcat then.

yours, Peter T.

Back from the pub and he's settling in up in the flat. No one told me he was a giant-in-training ... and apparently the baby of the family! Jon, Bron, if your mattresses don't measure a minimum 2 metres ... go out and buy extensions!!!!

This is MudGuard speaking on Sian's computer.
I have savely arrived at the home of a very nice WOMAN - I thought Sian was the Welsh version of the Irish/Scottish name Sean and therefore a male name...

Very much enjoying the trip - the opened heaven was just two short showers!
See you soon,
MudGuard (writing under a false name)

Sounds great, Mudguard. Wales is quite the beautiful place. Really pretty old ruined castle near Fishguard, if I remember rightly. Also enjoyed a memorable dawn hike in the hills around Betwys-y-Coed (spelling?) Hoist a pint for me, lad!

The Lady Elizabeth is only 5'2", and stilts didn't help.

Is the genial giant heading for the London area at all?

Ah, lucky MudGuard. I'd love to be in Wales right now. Please think of me if you cycle through the old slate quarry towns, and eat a nice big plate of something healthy like rice and beans at Pete's Eats if you're passing through Llanberis. . . Hope you have loads of fun! Margaret

I must admit I thought you were male at first as I had read your name as (I don't know the correct spelling but) Howell Bron and assumed that Bron was your surname but when I saw you write your name as Bronwen in a thread, I realised that I had made a mistake.

Well, I last ate at Pete's Eats in 1994, so it's possible that it's no longer there. I was a rock-climber of a different persuasion; I was there clambering around the quarries and cemeteries, looking at the roots of an emigrant Welsh slate-quarrying community in Pennsylvania. In any case, it sounds like MudGuard is experiencing wonderful hospitality at the hands of Jon, Bron, and Sian, so even if Pete's Eats is defunct he'll still find something to eat! Margaret

Mudguard wheeled off into the sunset yesterday morning. Um. well, OK ... not sunset, but you get the drift. He was supposed to get to Manorbier last night and Dale (at the very far tip of south west wales) by tonight. I expect he'll get there in no time - one rotation of the wheels on the mamoth bicycle must cover a good few meters. We had a great visit, and even came up with an idea of mounting a cross-bow on the front of a bike. I hope he hasn't seen the news this morning... the Swiss Army has announced that they're winding up their bicycle-mounted platoon. Mudcat was just telling me what a great troup they are!

Anyway, he says that he'll try to get in touch with us in the next few weeks - some of the hostels have cyber-cafes. He's not sure if he'll get as far as Bron in Welshpool ... but, as he's flying back from Birmingham in 3 and a bit weeks, I'd think that would be a convenient stop for him....

Anyway, he's off again on his Great Adventure!

Laughing at Bronwens comments about the shop shelves antics for those of less fortunate height.

Nice to hear that Mudguard is having fun will keep an eye out to see where he is at.

Here I am, now speaking under my real nickname!
First of all thanks to Sian for letting me have your flat and for your big hospitality!!!
Second, thanks for all your comments to this thread - I did not know I was such a prominent member of this group as I did not make too many contributions...
Third, Jon, I think it will take me at least two more weeks till I get near Llandudno, but I will get in touch when I get nearer.
Fourth, Bronwen, sorry about me thinking you might be male - I am not too familiar with foreign first names, so I just guessed - and obviously I guessed wrong. And it is no longer possible for me to follow each thread as there are so many threads each day. So I might just have missed the one where you told the Mudcat you are female.
And what a female - 6 feet 1 is quite tall for a lady!
I am thinking about going from Chester to Birmingham via Welshpool, so you might get a call from me.

By now I did some 620+ kilometers (about 380+ miles), and I enjoyed most of it - very nice people, beautiful scenery, great castles, and beer that's better than Guinness: Felinfoel Dark Dragon
So much for now, my small change is running out and so is my online time.
Back soon,
MudGuard

Thread creep alert - why does it matter who's what on the Mudcat? I've never understood that... I write as someone who is frequently mistaken for various genders I'm not. My reaction tends to be nil - I don't care, I don't consider it an insult to be grouped with a different sexuality, so... just curious....and if you do know what I am, just continue to use gender-neutral pronouns, it bugs me that it matters to anyone what gender anyone is when the 2 people involved are not attempting any mating acts. It shouldn't. Vive la différence!

It doesn't matter a jot, Mrrzy, when we're all communicating 'virtually' and cerebrally, but when one meets up with another Mudcatter in the flesh (as it were) it is deserving of comment if someone is not as expected.
I find this quite amusing and it makes me reconsider what preconceptions I have about people, based on very little!

Catrin & I discussed these preconceived ideas earlier when we met up 'in the real world' for the first time.

Mrrzy, I think it does matter when arranging to meet people, particularly when they are planning on spending a night under your roof. I also like to make sure people are aware of my size, because I can appear rather alarming, initially, but we don't want to get into that now, do we?

The last few days I was a bit inland, within the Snowdonia National Park. The Hostels there did not have internet access, so I could not report.
Now I am in a hostel called Lledr Valley Hostel which is in a village (if you can call it that - just a few houses) called Pont-y-pant. Tomorrow I will go to Llanbedr on the coast. My plans for the next few days are going into the Snowdonia National Park again for a few days, then one or two days on Anglesey.
So it will be at least a week till I get to Llandudno, Jon.

Just a quick report. Mudguard left my flat this morning and is headed towards Chester. I met up with Mudguard yesterday afternoon and we went to the top of the Great Orme, the highest and I think the nicest spot in Llandudno and had a gentle stroll back down to my flat stopping for a drink on the way. Mudguard then had a wander while I had a sleep and when I woke up, there was a meal of pork and peppers in a delicious cream and spices sauce waiting for me!

Bron, I hope that you do get to meet Mudgaurd while he is on his travels. It was a true pleasure for me to meet him and enjoy his excellent company for a few hours.

Now I am still in Chester, moving on to Llangollen tomorrow, where I will stay for two nights. After that I plan to go on to Welshpool, so Llanfair, if you see a small cyclist on an even smaller bike in Welshpool on Monday it might be me looking for you.
I will give you a call before I go to Welshpool to give you some warning.

Mudguard left at 10am and hit the road to Brecon. He is a lovely man and very interesting to talk to.
I gave him Welsh lamb, with mint sauce, roast potatoes, veg and gravy, followed by apple crumble and ice cream. I do like feeding people who enjoy their food!!!!
I think we caused a bit of a stir in the pub, when I walked in with a tall, blonde, YOUNG man!!!!!!
Still, when they are talking about me, they are leaving someone else alone!!!
Best wishes, Bron.

Hi there,

sorry I could not get online for the last few days.

I am safely back home now (and even my bike and luggage flew to Munich Airport inspite of changing planes in Brussels).

I enjoyed myself very well during the five times in Wales, and it was especially interesting to meet some of the nice people who I knew before then only as nicknames on the internet.

Of course, anyone coming to Munich is welcome to contact me, and I will try to return some of the hospitality which was shown to me by Sian, Jon and Bron (Llanfair).
