Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Toby - Webmaster type fellow for miskin site Date: 27 Sep 04 - 07:45 PM righty, the site will be operational again in the next few days ive been stupidly busy recently with 2 jobs, flu and enroling for university. but ive sorted out new hosting with dad (andy) and im just waiting for the domain name (www.miskinfolk.co.uk) to get transfered to the new location. once thats done i'll put the site back online and hopefully all shall once again be groovy. watch this space... or check miskinfolk.co.uk once in a while on a strange note, i temporarily placed a reduced copy of the website onto my university webspace (doing computer science has benefits) you can get there by going to: this linky here its not been updated in a while because dad cant access my account so hes not been able to update it, but its a basic start. we dont have a proper 2005 site yet, but im going to try and get that designed and written (making it dynamic and clever see) by the end of october depending on work from university. Hope all this satisfies your quench for miskiny type materials. as i said, the site will be back up and runnin within the week if all goes well. Toby Mr Admin for Miskinfolk Me site like |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: MBSLynne Date: 28 Sep 04 - 08:04 AM Oooh Toby...you're so clever! And when I remember "Toby's buggy space" it makes me feel incredibly old! Get on with it boyo! I need something to look forward to when this years's festivals are over! Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Schantieman Date: 28 Sep 04 - 09:09 AM Lynne, you are incredibly....no, perhaps I'd better not! Tell you what though - know what you mean! There's that son of yours, for one - not even a twinkle in his father's eye when we used to go to the SDADCS! Anyway, Ms Lemon and I expect to be there, unless I'm looking after/burying one or both aged parents or off on the briny somewhere! Looking forward to it already (Miskin, that is!) In the meantime, have a good winter, everyone! Steve |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Polly Squeezebox Date: 28 Sep 04 - 01:34 PM What about you, Yas? Remember - I was all growed up and married when my daddy all but adopted you when you were a little girl. I'm still proud to call you my special, little, 'almost' sister. I suppose that makes ME ancient, but remember you're as old as you feel - personally, I'm looking for a toy boy to feel so I feel young! Can't promise we'll be at Miskin - I got to this year's, didn't get out of the camper, and ended up having to take five months off work! |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Scooby Doo Date: 28 Sep 04 - 01:57 PM Yourabsolutely right Polly Squeezebox, your dad was very special. I to also thing you as my "Big Sister",that means your Tobys "Auntie"poor thing.lol. I never realised you were so ill until Andy told me a wee while ago,i hope your on the mend now.I was in hospital for 5 weeks the other month.I am on an even keel again thank goodness. Its great to hear from you,you take care now and i will see you somewhere i am sure. Are you doing Banbury?,as i am. Your looking for a toyboy well i got one and its no different except they have more energy!!!!!!. Love, Yas |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: MBSLynne Date: 28 Sep 04 - 03:37 PM Yas, that depends on the person, not the age!!! And if you are as old as you feel, I'm about 32. (Not as young as most people think they'd like to be, but at 32 I knew enough to enjoy it all more!) Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: MBSLynne Date: 28 Sep 04 - 03:39 PM And Schantieman......in those early SDADCS days, there seemed to be twinkles in a lot of people's eyes!!! Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Richard Atkins Date: 28 Sep 04 - 08:39 PM Miskin is a special one for me. Andy has done a brill job for years .I dont think it should be promoted on the cat. Word of Mouth is all that is needed for this uniqe event. Catters welcome of course :>) |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Cats at Work Date: 29 Sep 04 - 10:27 AM You are so right - Andy has done a superb job because his heart is in it. isn't that why he was awarded the trophy last year? Well deserved too. |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Schantieman Date: 29 Sep 04 - 10:46 AM Good point, Richard, but too late for that now - unless someone can disappear the thread. Yes, Lynne - I remember trying to get a twinkling! Steve |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,MBS Date: 30 Sep 04 - 05:08 PM Do you think Richard and others that Miskin Festival runs just because you come along,i believe it needs to be known to keep the festival going and if Miskin Man who is Andy wants to advertise the festival plus his son Toby then let it. |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Richard Atkins Date: 30 Sep 04 - 07:30 PM Miskin Mam did not start this thread. I stand by what I said. I hope Andy keeps this Thread in the picture nearer the time.If he feels tis right. His choice. Not mine. |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Zany Mouse Date: 30 Sep 04 - 07:32 PM At the risk of being shot down in flames - I have to agree with Richard. I LOVE Miskin, it's one of the highlights of the year for me, but it does get very crowded in the sings. I'm not sure if there is enough room for any more people. Rhiannon |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Toby - Webmaster type fellow for miskin site Date: 30 Sep 04 - 07:46 PM Hurrah, sorted out the site, weve got the basic site up and running on new and propa servers now :) im just setting up a forum at time of writing too so hopefully we can get a wee community going or summin. some people might not be able to access the site for a day or two yet, its all to do with "propagation of DNS entries" which basically means, not all the ISP knows that our site exist and they say "waaa? what site you want? Nah, sorry mate, wont have the parts for a few weeks and it'll cost extra to install" or maybe "site cant be found" on the more sensible browsers.... anyway, i digress... We Have Site! hurrah again sorry about the ramble, its just ive been workin on this for 3 days now and it was getting a bit frustrating. miskinfolk.co.uk and the forum might/will be at miskinfolk.co.uk/forum but not JUST yet :) p.s. im not advertising the festival, im just stopping people from emailing us about the site being broken :) althou a bit of advertising is good sometimes too Toby My Site! |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Richard Atkins Date: 03 Oct 04 - 08:48 PM GUEST,MBS. This festival doesnt work because I go. It works because its a wonderful small event, that I would like to stay as it is. Im selfish, too many festivals get bigger and loose atmosphere, and those "Tingly Song moments" that Andy loves dont happen. |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Richard Atkins Date: 03 Oct 04 - 08:59 PM SCOOBY,DOO Looking forward to seeing your decent from the bike rack this week end. OOPS WRONG THREAD!! :>} |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Miskin Man Date: 13 Oct 04 - 02:55 PM Looks like I dropped out of the system again!! Ne'er mind! Heard a rumour at Banbury that I was having trouble booking the Mill...Ah?? not so.. But I have now realised that someone must have overheard me saying I was having trouble with "The Site" i.e. the Web site, not the same thing!! The Mill is booked and ready and even the website is nearly up and running again. A first taste of guests and soon more to follow. See you there? Oh, and it mustn't be too big a secret or one day no-one will turn up!! Miskin Man |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Nigel Parsons Date: 13 Oct 04 - 04:01 PM Richard: Listing it here (not really advertising) is unlikely to do it any harm. A quick search on previous threads will show you that this is the fourth successive Miskin which has been heralded in this manner. So something must be going right! CHEERS Nigel |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: My guru always said Date: 14 Oct 04 - 05:16 PM Anyone who's ever been to Miskin makes it a part of their year & I certainly wouldn't miss it for the world!! It's a wonderful thriving festival (with all those tingly moments) but none of us want it to get toooooo big *smile* Methinks Richard is worried in case it's a real struggle to get to the bar through the crowd..... |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Dave Bryant Date: 18 Oct 04 - 08:18 AM As Linda (Essex Girl) has already said, we're looking forward to next year. According to Andy, They'll have a second field for caravans, so there should be a bit more space on the site. |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Scooby Doo Date: 18 Oct 04 - 09:38 AM Your right Dave instead of turning into the Mill carry on under Motorway and its on your right. |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Dave Bryant Date: 18 Oct 04 - 12:17 PM Yes that's where it was last year, but Andy said that the farmer is making a second field available this year, instead of just the one. It was rather crowded last year. Perhaps that means even more sheep ! |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Mrs.Duck Date: 18 Oct 04 - 01:14 PM Please sir can we come? We've heard so many good things about Miskin that we think we ought to. |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Miskin Man Date: 18 Oct 04 - 02:51 PM I dunno, I try and run a quiet little secret festival and people keep hearing about it, and then they blooming turn up!! Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Dave Bryant Date: 19 Oct 04 - 04:56 AM Mrs Duck - If you're bringing that husband of your's, you'll have to tell him - no banjos - they scare the sheep. ;-) |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Cardiff Student Date: 19 Oct 04 - 04:19 PM Let him scare the sheep. They're more responsive if they think you're being protective! |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Linael Date: 19 Oct 04 - 07:39 PM More responsive? they're quite difficult to steer under normal conditions... If they get any 'flightier' they are likely to develop a high-speed weave, similar to early 80's Kawasaki Z900's. Why do I keep wanting to say Minisk? have I been brainwashed by Russians or something. I would love to come, and might, unless I am throwing eggs, chasing cheeses, building Green-men or other "Please let it be Summer soon" activities. SALUT Linael |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Toby Date: 19 Oct 04 - 09:13 PM Howdy all, glad to see everyones getting all keen and fired up for another festival, turning into a bit of a regular thing now... we might have to start organising something a bit. :) anyways, im just gonna have a quick plug for the forum weve got on the miskin site, dads gonna link to it from the main page of miskin. Check it out and see what you think. www.miskinfolk.co.uk/forum if you have any requests for something for the website, or the main festival dont hesitate to put them there, its a cheesy line, but we appreciate any constructive feedback we get from you lot. Im currently working with dad on sorting out some new pictures and things for the site. I may make a gallery you lot can add your own snaps to, but we'll see eh? ;) Tobes |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: MBSLynne Date: 20 Oct 04 - 03:27 AM Well it LOOKS good Toby, but as a thechnophobe I found it very confusing...too many different bits and pieces...not clear enough for techno-idiots like me...sorry but you did ask for feedback! Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Mrs.Duck Date: 20 Jan 05 - 01:14 PM A query - we normally go everywhere in the caravan. Does the campsite take vans or is it tents only. We don't want to be far from the late night action! |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Snuffy Date: 20 Jan 05 - 01:23 PM Very limited numbers of vans on the main site, but plenty of room at the "quiet" site about 1/4 mile away. |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Mrs.Duck Date: 20 Jan 05 - 02:17 PM 1/4 ile is too far to leave kids so we'll buy a tent. shame Easter is so early but we can always huddle together for warmth. What are food facilities and washing? |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: MBSLynne Date: 21 Jan 05 - 02:41 AM Ooooh I am REALLY beginning to look forward to it!! Good thing there's the Reunion in the interim or I don't know how I'd manage to wait! So....who's going? Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Essex Girl Date: 21 Jan 05 - 08:29 AM Dave and I are intending to go, as he is quite mobile now. I'll have to tow the caravan though, but after the terrific time we had last year we don't want to miss out. See you there. Linda |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Alan Simms Date: 30 Jan 05 - 11:30 AM It's a shame Miskin clashes with the Gosport & Fareham Easter Festival as I've booked tickets for the latter, tempted by Eliza Carthy, Jez Lowe, Harvey Andrews, Ralph McTell, Show of Hands et al. Hopefully I might get to Miskin next year. |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson Date: 01 Feb 05 - 07:19 PM Hello all, call to arms time. Despite all the secrecy it seems to have leaked out that Miskin is on again this year…We all know its getting bigger so we need more help. Ideally I would like a team to help set up on Thursday and Friday morning and then relax and enjoy but be ready to help again on the crucial Monday morning. I also need anyone with cooking expertise to do a shift in the kitchen. Bar staff will be a team unto themselves but please contact me if you have expertise in such matters. The dispensing of that is, not the consumption. Lastly of course we need those festival workhorses, the stewards. Door duty, car parking and general ticketing is not exactly arduous at Miskin but it has to be done. As for the rest of you just come along and do try to enjoy yourselves will you!! Oh by the way, after much deliberation I have decided we must follow public opinion and stop smoking in the lounge bar. This is where people are eating after all and it is the only complaint I have had in the last few years. I hope we wont have to limit numbers but to make sure just order your tickets now, there is an on line booking form on the website. www.miskinfolk.co.uk |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson Date: 01 Feb 05 - 07:21 PM It case anyone is twitching I am also guest Miskin Man but I think I got it sussed now. 'Fraid my cage has been rattled now so watch this space for more info |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,The Glaswegian Date: 01 Feb 05 - 08:24 PM I picked-up a leaflet for the Gosport Easter Festival at 'Celtic Connections' in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall last week and ordered my ticket by credit card before hearing anything about Miskin. Although there's plenty about Miskin here on mudcat it's a pity the organisers didn't have any publicity leaflets at 'Celtic Connections'. I hope all who go to Miskin enjoy themselves as much as I will seeing the many fine singers and musicians at Gosport. |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Miskin Man Date: 02 Feb 05 - 07:00 AM Blimey Glaswegian, you don't think I want people turning up do you?? I have enough trouble with these Mudlarks as it is!! |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Morticia Date: 02 Feb 05 - 02:14 PM Best 'secret' festival in the world but enjoy Gosport, those of you going! |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Cats Date: 02 Feb 05 - 04:33 PM The biggest disappointment for this year is that I now can't come! Due to vaguaries of the railways who don't run the daily train to Brighton on Sunday night because it is Easter, I either spend all day travelling and spend an hour on two separate railway stations if I miss the 6 minute connection (some hope)or I don't come at all. So.. Jon will be there and I expect you all to phone me from the sessions so I can join in at home. I could always tell you a story or lead a song via the web though... Andy... isn't Toby a computer genius.... this could be a first.. a virtual me!!! |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Morticia Date: 02 Feb 05 - 04:39 PM Oh No!!!! This is terrible news.....what about Daniel's Band? I was so looking forward to you guys terrifying my hangover into submission! |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Limehouse Lizzy Date: 02 Feb 05 - 09:59 PM To Cats above. Sorry you can't get to Miskin Cats due to the vagaries of the railway timetable but I think you can get to Gosport / Fareham. That festival is held in Fareham now (nothing much takes place in Gosport) and my railway timetable indicates there are frequent direct trains between Brighton and Fareham even on Easter Sundays. It will take more than the rail companies to keep us mudcatters away from our music. There's always a festival somewhere within reach by rail! |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson Date: 03 Feb 05 - 04:04 AM Havnt quite cracked this signing on businass yet. This is actually Miskin man here::: Just to dispel any rumours that this secret festival is even secret from British Rail, we actually have a half decent service most days. Here's a quick version of the times over the Easter period On Friday Saturday and Monday there is an hourly service from Cardiff to Pontyclun, (10 mins walk at most) at approx 20 past every hour until 2031 then a last one at 2230 And from Pontyclun to Cardif 10 to the hour with the last one at 20:51 We just don't go anywhere 'cept chapel on Sundays it seems Just two from Cardiff 19:57 2214 And one back at 1956 Simple answer for everyone but Cats is to arrive on Friday and STAY. I know Cats is in an unavoidable situation and letter from Mum has been accepted. Cats has supported Miskin from the early days and will be sadly missed. Andy |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Cats at Work Date: 03 Feb 05 - 04:09 AM Thanks for the suggestions. It's not a festival I need..it's Miskin! I was due to help out with singing and storytelling but have to be in Brighton for my Trade Union Conference on Sunday night. It's that I don't want to end up missing half of everything to get to brighton and I can't take all my posh conference stuff plus camping gera as Jon will have the camper in Wales while I'm in Cornwall! Just as a consolation prize though, it means I can go to the reopening of the Witchcraft Museum in Boscastle instead and support graham and co. |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson Date: 03 Feb 05 - 10:24 AM Now the trouble with storytellers is.....is this true? hmmm?? Read the above in over-the-top storyteller style and see what I mean... Tee Hee, sorry Kathy, couldn't resist it. |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Cats Date: 03 Feb 05 - 11:42 AM The story continues... and of course next year neither Jon nor I will be at Miskin as conference is in Ireland..... |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Hawker Date: 03 Feb 05 - 12:39 PM Cats, if you did want to spend some time there we have a bigger camper, you could always put it in ours until needed? Just a suggestion! Cheers, Lucy |

Meanwhile I've updated the website with a fuller guest list there are still a couple of names to add when confirmed but it all seems to be turning out nice again. A few advance ticket orders would mean we could afford to buy food to feed you all. Hmmm, drink?????? |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Leraud Date: 03 Feb 05 - 02:07 PM Can someone please tell me what the shower/loo facilities are like on the campsite? Ta. Lynne |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson Date: 04 Feb 05 - 12:10 PM Hello each, thanks for all the messages/enquiries etc. I try to answer them all by PMs. BUT my life would be a lot easier if you could use my email address andy@miskinfolk.co.uk. My outlook express is set up to file things in the right place all by itself and I can keep a proper record. I work from two bases 150 miles apart and outlook does all the forwarding for me. Thanks chaps and chappeses. Andy |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Mrs.Duck Date: 04 Feb 05 - 12:28 PM Well Monsieur Splott much as I would love to inflict my children ( not to mention my husband) on you for an extra day it looks like we won't be getting there until Thursday lunchtime as the campsite is not available until then but thanks for the thought! |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Dave Earl Date: 05 Feb 05 - 03:10 AM Cat, After Miskin we are going over to stay with Gervase and Mary Jane for a few days so won't be back until April 1. There is a singaround (home for waifs and strays) in the Railway, Ditchling Rise on Wednesdays and a similar thing in the Jolly Brewer Ditchling Road on Sundays (same people as Wed so same style). Other than that you will need to travel to Lewes or Seaford on Thursday and Friday respectively. Ther is a website with all this on it but I am at work and don't have the URL at present. Dave |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Cats Date: 05 Feb 05 - 07:10 PM Thanks, Dave. I've taken up Cllr on his offer of a lift to Bristol which means...... (drum roll here) I'll be at Miskin until Sunday afternoon...yippee!!!! So, There will be a Story Walk and Daniel's Band will have a female voice and, if you are very lucky, I might just sing a couple of times elsewhere too. Thanks Cllr for your generous offer... we can sing together now!! Thanks Phot, but Brighton is a hell of a way, even with your V8 engine..... but we could all go for a trip to Bristol in it perhaps. |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: My guru always said Date: 06 Mar 05 - 04:43 PM Just back from Crediton *smile* & looking forward to Miskin! For those going to Miskin on the Thursday, the Newport Folk Club is on, should be a Singers night. Don't think I'll get there till the Friday but I'm sure they'll welcome Miskinites with open arms. Have been chatting to a few people about Mudcatters organising a raffle at Miskin this year. Apparently this used to happen (prizes were mostly Easter Eggs - eggcellent tradition!!) but I don't recall it happening in the past couple of years. The Festival Crew are all up to their ears with lots of stuff to do, so I wondered if it was something we could sort out? Each bring something to put in, that sort of thing. Miskin's charity this year is the Road Rose Association ( www.roseroad.co.uk - web-page doesn't load for me at the moment), so it would be nice to raise some extra money for them. What do you think? |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson Date: 06 Mar 05 - 05:28 PM How can I put this?? When the Miskin Arms changed hands some while ago it changed into a restaurant - with, effectively, a side bar. It was felt by the new management that folk music and the festival weekend itself were not appropriate to the new image. Because of this we have over the years honed our bar management skills to provide what we are now proud to think of as Real pub" within the Mill and left the Miskin Arms to the locals with whom we have established mutual respect. In the past we have finished work at a reasonable time Thursday evening and then travelled down to the Newport Folk Club some 15 miles away. This year we have the use of the Mill from Thursday afternoon with the idea of being a bit more ready and less tired out come the start on Friday. Volunters are welcome by prior arrangement but we will not be ready to start the festival proper until midday Friday (when the licences come into force) I hate to see a thirsty man so bring a few cans or something suitable for thursday evening, if you are not popping over to Newport. If you can't read between the lines please email or phone me for detailed arrangements. |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Splott Man Date: 07 Mar 05 - 03:11 AM Pat Spoons won't be there unfortunately, she'll be with Baggywrinkle at Lancaster (She's a busy little girl see). If music rather than song is your thing, there's a sesh (fiddles and stuff) at the Canton Hotel in Canton, Cardiff on Thursdays (about 11 miles, oh, and Andy, Newport club is 22 from Pat's house so it would be about the same from the Mill - ooh there's pedantic!). I'll be running the Folk Club on Monday afternoon (at the Windsor Hotel as usual). I'll be winding up at about 5pm as I have a gig that evening, but the room is booked until stop-tap for those who want to carry on - but be warned, last year the pub booked a loud cabaret act in the room below in the evening, which made that part of the sesh difficult. See you there, Splott Man |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: el_punkoid_nouveau Date: 08 Mar 05 - 03:01 PM This is REALLY important stuff! Andy - is it possible to arrange a television somewhere on site on Saturday 26th (or at least within easy distance)? I have just found out from here that (and this beats Royal Weddings, Funerals and even Coronations as an important event) the most important TV event for years will be happening... And the event is... The return of DR WHO! And let's face it - a video just won't be the same! |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Eye Lander Date: 08 Mar 05 - 03:12 PM Television at a festival! Phew - it would have to be a pretty good reason! |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Nigel Parsons Date: 08 Mar 05 - 03:25 PM el punkoid neuveau: You're really tempting fate there. I'm also a 'Filker' (folk music with a SF bias, often with parodied tunes) The temptation to produce a new 'Who Filk', based on a single episode would have to be resisted strongly. But as The Borg (Star Trek The Next Generation) would say: "Resistance is futile!" Nigel |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: el_punkoid_nouveau Date: 08 Mar 05 - 03:46 PM I ain't a filker, Nigel - I don't even like being branded as a "folkie", having wide and varied interests in music. But who can resist the temptation to hide behind the sofa, or stuff a cushion over their face? - as the Vogon guard would put it - "RESISTANCE IS USELESS!" (Well, the shouting was good...) epn |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson Date: 08 Mar 05 - 06:15 PM Having worked my life in Telly, who am I to deny the need for such an appliance? A suitable receiving apparatus could indeed, and shall indeed, be provided, but knowing the unpredictabilities of reception patterns I feel unable at this juncture to guarantee the prevaling signal strength in such a low lying area as the Mill surrounds. Notwithstanding the above reservations, I see no reason to deprive such as yourselves from the full enjoyment of a weekend with normal "folk thinking" people, and I am sure a suitable solution can be found. yours in joint who-ness, Andy |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: RobbieWilson Date: 09 Mar 05 - 10:14 AM I was definitely coming to Miskin but now I have seen the photos; everyone has a beard. I don't think I have time to grow one before then. Will they still let me in? |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Dave Earl Date: 09 Mar 05 - 10:17 AM Beards are very common but I don't think they are obligatory:-) Dave |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson Date: 09 Mar 05 - 10:36 AM I say old chap! Nothing common about my beard, it may have shrunk over the last couple of years but its still part of the family. I hold nothing against those less fortunate, beardless, chappies I even let them come along to jolly old Miskin. Some of my best friends haven't got beards come to think of it - there's My Guru, Scooby doo,MBS Lynne,Cats at work, Morticia - I could go on......(Have been known to go on a bit, don't you know!!) |

It's just been pointed out to me that the kids are still at School on Thursday (The day before Good Friday - how are families supposed to get away for Easter ?) so my original travelling plans are in chaos now. Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: MBSLynne Date: 11 Mar 05 - 05:28 PM Personally, I think they should make Easter a fixed date...it seems so silly that it moves around as much as it does. And I can see the point of the Isle of Wight's move this year...we've only had four weeks of this half term and the summer term is going to be incredibly long. Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Hawker Date: 17 Mar 05 - 12:49 PM H Miskinites, Bad news here I am afraid, or good news, depending on who you are and how you look at it! I will be unable to come to Miskin!!!!!! Sorry, No Corn Dolly workshops from me this year. Do have a go at lace making though, its fantastic! and Jillie and the lace babes are lovely! (so Kevin says) I go a phone call this morning telling me that I am going into Hospital on Wednesday and having my long awaited knee op. I will be home Thursday, but remembering the last op on the other knee, wont be feeling like festivalling until at least Monday and definately not upto running a workshop. I shall sit with a bottle of port and my feet up and think of you all. Have a great time, I know it will be brilliant and I am Gutted to miss it, but delighted that I am getting my knee sorted too!!!!! mixed emotions! Cheers, Lucy |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson Date: 17 Mar 05 - 05:17 PM I've had a request to allow impromptu Morris at Miskin......Allow? I would positively encourage such a thing. In days of Yore we had a very solid dance base. Things have changed though and sadly I cant guarantee suitable wet weather contingency plans. If anyone wants to bring Kit on the chance of a dance then we have plenty of room on the courtyard. And if it rains you'll just have to drown your sorrow. Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Scooby Doo Date: 17 Mar 05 - 05:45 PM Well done Andy for getting the 300th post to your festival |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: RobbieWilson Date: 17 Mar 05 - 05:47 PM I think putting in a filler at 299 was cheating. I was also watching but had to go out singing as it is paddy's night. |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Snuffy Date: 17 Mar 05 - 07:10 PM Sorry to hear you won't be there, Lucy. Hope you're soon up and about again. So who's going to keep us breakfast boys in order?? |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Sue the Borderer Date: 17 Mar 05 - 07:33 PM Jillie told me to get myself onto mudcat pronto and beg for victims/volunteers - but I see Miskin Man has beaten me to it. However, as a mudcat virgin, (even though a MBS and its my 2nd Miskin,) it's a bit scary, so its taken me a day or two! Yes, it was I - I'm the one who asked Andy if we could run a scratch Border side at Miskin (as an offshoot of Herbaceous Border which creates mayhem at Sidmouth)So - bring your dancing shoes - and, if you dance already, your sticks and raggies etc (and even spares if you have them) ANYONE is welcome - whether or not you've ever danced before. And we'll need some musicians too. Not sure quite when and where it will be, but I'll keep you posted. It would be great to know who might be interested - so do say 'hi'. And thanks, Andy, for everything, including beating me to it. I think you deserve the 300. Sue PS Mudcat virginity about to be lost - so you can add my name to the list. |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Snuffy Date: 17 Mar 05 - 07:48 PM Sue, Andy only said impromptu Morris: he never mentioned specific brands such as Border. What about us Cotswold types? :-)) And will there be any swordies or cloggies? Only a week now |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Snuffy Date: 17 Mar 05 - 07:50 PM And how about doing it at dawn, as we're leaving the bar!!!!!!!!!!! |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson Date: 21 Mar 05 - 06:29 AM HELP, just a shot in the dark here. I have been given an old till to help keep some order at Miskin but I can't get in!!!!! Its a Casio CE 4515 and it needs the clerk number entered before it will work. Anybody got any suggestions? Can I reset to factory presets by removing battery back up or anything like that? Any help would be appreciated. Cheers Andy |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: pixieofdoom Date: 21 Mar 05 - 06:59 AM From my experience of tills, any clerk number should do. Usually there's a button marked 'clerk id' or similar, you press that enter a number such as 1 and then press it again. Not sure about your particular brand of till though |

Nip out & pick up an Egg or something (booze or booby) to donate. I've seen eggs at 3 for £4.00 at Sainsburys so there's no excuse - donate 1, eat 2 - no problem! Don't go mad, I already have (never a truer word spoken, eh?). My donation may just be the top prize - a Fabulous Choc Express Egg that I couldn't justify buying for myself...... Pass prizes to me on arrival & I'll get them stored away from temptation somewhere. If you can't find me (in the bar possibly - well, there's the Grand Eliminator to think about), I'm sure that Andy won't mind if you leave them at 'reception' for me. Hoping to put up draw results on Easter Sunday, probably around lunchtime! And of course, bring your pennies for the raffle tickets that I'll be selling frantically. If anyone feels they can help out, please PM me before Friday lunchtime! |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,MBSLynne Date: 28 Mar 05 - 10:25 AM Severe post-festival depression setting in already! A most fantastic weekend altogether (apart from rides in ambulances and waiting in A&E!) I don't think I've ever fitted quite so much into one short festival! In four days I've sung, played, run a folk club, danced border Morris for the first time, watched three lots of friends performing, danced in a 'scratch' ceilidh, played Pooh sticks, Walked across a bridge parapet, played lots of cool games around Jan's van, drunk a lot of cider, hugged loads of people, talked quite a lot, laughed, been part of the dragon in a procession, learnt practised and sung a song I'd never heard before with three others doing harmonies and things...... I didn't actually get time to SLEEP much, but you can't have everything! I also met a good number of Mudcatters I've never met before who are now on my ever-growing list of friends. Andy and all the team..thank you sooooomuch. It was truly brilliant. I think for the first time in 23 years, a festival has actually eclipsed Sidmouth for me!! There is no higher compliment. Lots and lots of love and hugs Lynne xxxxxxxx |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Mrs.Duck Date: 28 Mar 05 - 02:34 PM Lynne, you missed out being hoisted aloft by burly men midsong! Absolutely fantastic weekend. We are no longer virgins and will be doing it all again next year. Thanks Andy and everyone that made this such a fun filled festival. I don't remember having such a hassle free weekend since the twins arrived; they and Maddie loved every minute of it. The singing, the beer, the friends old and new! Now for the come down! Can't wait to get into chat and relive some of it! |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,MBSLynne Date: 28 Mar 05 - 02:41 PM No, nor can I wait to get into the chat, but the main entrance has been down every time I've tried it since 3.00. Just when I needed it most!!! And you're right Jane, how could I have forgotten being carted about near the ceiling by various large men in Nelly Dean's while trying to sing! I think I managed it though! Yes, the kids had a wonderful time too...they really enjoyed their first go at Stewarding and have every intention of doing it again next year. Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Guest Selchie - (RS) Date: 28 Mar 05 - 03:10 PM Hi Lynne & Jane & all Catters at Miskin, My first time too, but what a great time? Miskin lived up to all I've heard about it & more! Many, many thanks to Andy & all the lovely, friendly team. Nice people, great singing, lovely venue, such a nice easy-going, friendly event with time for me to meet even more nice people & to feel part of one big family. Hi to all I've met over the weekend. (Keep at the Border Lynne) Anyone can join "Herbaceous Border" scratch morris ~ at festivals throughout the season ~ it's great fun! Looking forward to seeing some you soon at other festivals. Shame it had to end, so here's to the next one. Love to all, Rosie S |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Snuffy Date: 28 Mar 05 - 04:18 PM The old Miskin Magic has worked again - and better than ever before. Three days of wonderful fare for absolutely everyone - singers, dancers, musicians, kids, performers, spectators. And what a friendly bunch both providing and consuming all the offerings, under the expert and benign control of Andy Jillie and Jo. And special thanks and hugs from me to the Lynnettes (Linnets?). When I made a request on Friday for Rock My Heart to be sung sometime over the weekend, little did I expect that it would lead to the formation of a new group to learn, rehearse and perform the song in time for Sunday night. Ladies, your performance was absolutely spine-tingling, and I am absolutely speechless that you would go to such lengths. You have made a happy man very old :-) Miskin truly does go that extra mile. Many thanks to every one of you who came and helped to make the last four days one of the most magical times. |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Davetnova Date: 29 Mar 05 - 02:15 AM I got back last night after the long drive back. I had to drag myself away early. Thanks to Andy and everyone else involved. To a newcomer punter like myself they made the whole thing run smoothly and apparently effortlessly. And I don't know why but my throat hurts. See you next year. |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Splott man in through the side window Date: 29 Mar 05 - 02:29 AM I agree with it all. ...and 61 mudcatters at the last count! Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Splott Man through the cat flap Date: 29 Mar 05 - 03:55 AM My highlights: Jon Heslop & Kathy Wallis in the Cottage Saturday teatime - passionate. Mary Humphries & Anahata - new to me and so entertaining. The magnificent work done by Jan the Van and her crew for the parade - the dragon and hobby horses. Plus the the triple pipes of Vicky, Johnny and Colman leading the parade. The quiet sessions upstairs where you could sing or play what you wanted rather than do crowd-pleasers. Luasca (Harriet Earlis & Colman Connolly) with Vicky Swan & Johnny Dyer sitting in. When quality musicians like these get together, they don't just jam, they produce something magical and exciting. Jon Heslop again, Sunday late in Nelly Dean's - sorry, don't know what the song was, just loved the joyous harmony singing. Splott Man |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,MGAS, crawling in through a mouse-hole Date: 29 Mar 05 - 07:13 AM Fabulous!!! What can I say (having only 5 minutes lunch-break left)?? Loved every second, including the hangovers & scrubbing the kitchen on Monday! Thanks to AllCats for all the help & support for the MudRaffle - not to mention all the Fab prizes! We managed to raise £313.13 (a numeric palindrome which only needed the extra 3p popping in) for the Rose Road Association. It was handed to 'Michael's Mum' who was absolutely delighted and will be trying to find her way in here to thank us all personally. The last unclaimed raffle prize (the lovely liquer chocolate egg) was handed over too for Michael (over 18) to enjoy. A fitting end to a really enjoyable bit of fund-raising. Thanks again everyone who came, gave, helped & didn't get pissed off at my novice sales techniques...... Will pop in later (if I can find my way) to post the MudSigner List - what an enormous amount of Catters there were.. I can't imagine how they all managed to get in the MudShoot!! Thanks so much to Andy, Jillie & the Team, it's just Magic! |

It was a brilliant weekend - I'm off to try and find Harriet's site next, because that hlaf hour was true magic. I can't put it any better than Ian - make me deaf now, I've heard heaven! But can someone tell me the names of all the tunes we played for the Miskin Link side, and at the Scratch Ceilidh, so that I can start work on arrangements for the plumbing? My ticket is booked for next year! epn |

Shall we do it again next year, but publicise the time on here beforehand? Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Mary Humphreys Date: 29 Mar 05 - 02:51 PM Super weekend. A big round of applause for Miskin Man, Avril Betts ( was that really she? ) and all the stewards for all the hard work and organisation that went into it. Highlight for me was dancing Border morris for the first time. It was great to see the children having fun and being a central part of the Sunday festivities. Jan's van and her helpers did a fantastic job. Well done all. Mary Humphreys |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: My guru always said Date: 29 Mar 05 - 04:28 PM T'was a real shame not all the Catters knew about the MudShoot organised by Phot, but perhaps the notice-board wasn't noticed as it was situated on the way to the bar - maybe another time it could be 'in' the bar! I have suggested to Phot that perhaps his digital dark-room could add in some photo CatCut-outs to the main picture. As I recall, he laughed..... The MudSigning board was well used & the Attendance record of Catters & Associated MudFriends'n'Family reads as follows: Miskin Man Eye Lander Little Miskin Man (Toby?) Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Snuffy Date: 29 Mar 05 - 04:50 PM Hils, Yes, Tradsinger was there, as was Croc (not on the group photo as she was MC-ing with Vectis at the time) Gervase and MJ turned up to the survivors session at the Windsor on Monday afternoon, as did Lady Policeman and Bill. And that is an official part of Miskin at Easter, isn't it? |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Sue the Borderer Date: 29 Mar 05 - 05:50 PM Wow! What a magical weekend. Thank you, thank you, thank you times a million. And, yes, I am on e-mail Barbara. I gave it to Tom at the last Shammick. Great to see that people enjoyed the Border stuff. I worked out that over 40 people danced, only 5 of whom were 'Borderers' and most had never morrissed before at all. A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL THE MUSICIANS WHO PLAYED FOR US. You were magnificent - and we couldn't have done it without you. 'Herbaceous Border' hopes to dance at Upton (probably 6pm daily under the Bridge) and various other festivals during the year (as well as Sidmouth where it first began. I'll post details somewhere. And I'll sign onto mudcat properly soon. Don't want to be a guest for ever. Sue |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,MBSLynne Date: 30 Mar 05 - 05:23 AM Bugger! Back door again! Next year, wouldn't it be easier to count the number of people there who AREN'T Mudcatters?? Having mentioned some of the things I did over the weekend, I forgot to say that one of my highlights was seeing Rosanna, Tom and Louise get the trophy. Andy is absolutely right in saying they are our future. They (and of course all the other kids too) make sure that there IS a future, not just for folk music, but for the whole folk ethos. They got the most applause I heard all weekend (and that's saying something!) and they were all so pleased, it nearly made me cry. It was a wonderful introduction to folk festivals for Louise. Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: GUEST,Seaking (Back on the stilts) Date: 30 Mar 05 - 05:29 AM Made it home to Felixstowe in only four hours, 'Mash' asleep in the back of the car most of the way - I think they'd enjoyed themselves ! Fantastic weekend, gets better every year. Too many highlights to mention them all but the Proud Dad moments and the singing in the Cottage were top of the list. Enjoyed meeting all the old and some new Catters. Nearly froze in the tent Andy, can you arrange Easter to be a bit later next year please ... Cheers Chris |

Thanks Lynne for what you said about Mash, whenever I'm in a mood now I just stare at the trophy and smile :D We'll all definitely be coming back next year, and I don't care if my Dad has to work- I'll walk if I have to!! Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Dave Bryant Date: 30 Mar 05 - 07:03 AM Great Festival Andy - I had a wonderful time - did more singing than I've done at any time since my stroke. The harmonies in the bar were magic - and I don't think it was just "Beer Hearing Aids". Thanks to everyone for their encouragement and good wishes - and in return, hope that Mick Tems and all the other "Strokey Folkies" manage to progress further in their recoveries. Perhaps Andy should apply for a grant from the NHS for the theraputic powers of the festival (especially Jude's cuddles), which have definitely made me feel much better. |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Mick Tems Date: 31 Mar 05 - 07:49 AM In reponse to Splott Man's message about the number of musicians at the ceilidh and Buttered Peas – I was playing a familiar Welsh tune of striking similarity called Pwt Ar Y Bys (A Vamp On The Fingers) which the Romany harpers would use for a warm-up exercise. Perhaps the story revolves around the age-old sessions, somewhere on the border between England and Wales, where English musicians would hear Welsh harpers playing this tune – and they would spread the tune across Cheshire, Lancashire or all other localities, each carrying a delightful mishearing of the name of the tune. (Mishearings and mistakes are all too common in tradition - (The New Scorpion Band researched a group of musicians in the Napoleonic Wars. The members had as their party piece a tune called The Downfall Of Pears, despite composer M. Becourt's naming of this piece The Downfall Of Paris.) I'm not claiming which came first, because both Welsh and English musicians had a habit of totally ignoring political boundaries. Just compare Pwt Ar Y Bys to Buttered Peas, and draw your own conclusions. |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Mick Tems Date: 31 Mar 05 - 08:59 AM Hi Dave, Strokey folkies - I really do like that! I was talking to Chris at Sunday's ceilidh about the important need to form an alternative stroke association which would cater for musicians, and you seem to have hit the nail on the head! The bar-cum-singing room was just too busy for me to have a good talk with you, but with three of us, mountains can be moved. Watch this space... |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Tradsinger Date: 31 Mar 05 - 03:02 PM The missus and me really enjoyed the festival. Missed out on the MC photo, though, as I didn't know there would be one. Ah well, I'll get to know the rules better when I've been in Mudcat longer. Will there be a MC reunion at Sidmouth, I wonder? Gwilym |

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: Andy Jackson Date: 31 Mar 05 - 07:34 PM Seems to have gone quiet!!!! Right then if you've done with the thank yous. It's my go now. THANK YOU, all of you - you have generated enthusiasm and interest in an incredible way. I can see no easy way of limiting tickets but long ago went down the path of limited publicity, and with the Miskin Mud Moggies on board, publicity went to the right people. Special thanks of course to My Guru, for the idea the enthusiasm and the follow through to raise such a grand amount with the raffle. I know that the Rose Road Association were amazed at the response for a cause so far from Wales. But then most of those who come to Miskin are from a fair way away. Although I am never going to run another one, plans are well started for next year, with guests booked and even ticket reservations already! This is the first chance I've had to write any sort of chat and today I am taking Eyelander away for a few days in Suffolk. On my return I shall attack the website and attempt some sort of report for those that missed it. Tarra each, Andy |
Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2005 From: kitchen piper Date: 01 Apr 05 - 05:04 AM Hello! Miskin is such a lovely start to the festval season, (just warm enough not to need a hot water bottle in the van). We had such a great time! I mentioned that I was doing this thing called podcasts, well, I did a podcast for Miskin. It's never going to recapture the feeling or the atmosphere, but I thought that you might want to have a listen, especially Andy might want to listen to the the third track that I chose... Miskin Podcast If you're not familiar with podcasting, it's just an mp3 file to listen to a bit like radio, you just need to download it. If you're familiar with blogging and rss, it's basically an audio blog that you can rss. I hope that's ok, I was a bit nervous about mentioning it here... >looks bashful< Thanks for a great weekend anyway! :-)) Vicki |

Never mind, I did make it on to Radio 4 on Tuesday afternoon and evening, plus the Times, Independent, Guardian and Morning Star, so it was worth it!! I have a little something for us to share next time you are down... hurry before it all goes. Thanks to Splott Man for saying kind things about our set on Saturday.
