Subject: BS: Bush, an American Saviour - seriously!
From: GUEST,peedeecee
Date: 30 Sep 04 - 07:21 PM

From this morning's New York Times, a bit of news that is so appalling that even the most rightwing fundies must be embarrassed. Apparently some Bush supporters have made a film that will be released on October 5 (same days as Fahrenheit 9/11 DVD). It is called "Faith in the White House," and it compares GWB with Jesus Christ - favourably. He is presented as a True Warrior for God.

The review in this morning's NYT called the film "The Passion of the Bush," which I find funny, but I also find the entire issue ludicrous, manipulative, and contemptuous of the people it is designed to manipulate.

I'm sorry I don't have time to post some snippets from the review -- here is the website, and I urge you all to read it, as it is absolutely unbelievable. I look forward to reading your comments.

The Passion of the Bush

Well worth the read. Unbelievable! Megalomania at its best/worst?!

This is truly sickening.

An excerpt:

"nyone who stands in the way of Mr. Bush completing his godly battle, of course, is a heretic. Facts on the ground in Iraq don't matter. Rational arguments mustered in presidential debates don't matter. Logic of any kind is a nonstarter. The president - who after 9/11 called the war on terrorism a "crusade," until protests forced the White House to backpedal - is divine. He may not hear "voices" instructing him on policy, testifies Stephen Mansfield, the author of one of the movie's source texts, "The Faith of George W. Bush," but he does act on "promptings" from God. "I think we went into Iraq not so much because there were weapons of mass destruction," Mr. Mansfield has explained elsewhere, "but because Bush had concluded that Saddam Hussein was an evildoer" in the battle "between good and evil." So why didn't we go into those other countries in the axis of evil, North Korea or Iran? Never mind. To ask such questions is to be against God and "with the terrorists.""

A classic rearguard stance of reactionary regret -- the yearners for the past to recur--which makes Jefferson's vision of free and thinking men and women into a knee-jerk extremist panegyric of superstition and a paean to small-mindedness incarnate.

Did you look over the various titles from the same source? Maybe these are the people who will film my true story of how I was abducted by aliens, and when they got me up to the saucer, there were Bigfoot, and Edgar Cayce, and Elvis, and King Tut...

What do people sniff before they buy into material like this?

A well-meaning friend just forwarded this piece of spam, in case you haven't seen it; I won't put it all in; what I skipped was just more specific details of the same stuff.
> Received this from a friend of a friend and thought you would be interested . . .
I was privileged to attend the Bush Rally at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. I won't bore you with what Bush and the politicians had to say but what happened before the rally started made me so proud to be a member of the Minnesota Republican Party.
>
> Over 15,000 people showed up and many stood in line for 3 to 4 hours to get in. The host was Laura Ingraham, a syndicated radio talk show host. She said, "Before we start the rally does anyone object if we begin with prayer?" The place went nuts. Everyone was cheering at the top of their voice in approval. It didn't feel like a political rally. I felt like I was at a Promise Keepers conference or a Campus Crusade for Christ
> rally. Then Dan Williams came to the podium to lead us in prayer. (Dan is running for a congressional seat in Minnesota.) Upon entering the Xcel center we were given inflatable thunder sticks to make noise. As Dan was praying, people were holding up their thunder sticks in the form of a cross all over the auditorium!
>
> We were told the Democrats will not pray at their rallies for fear it might "offend" someone
> Then of course Bush entered and the place went berserk. With 15,000 plus people cheering about a mere mortal man, I couldn't help but imagine what it will be like when the whole world cheers when our Lord Jesus comes again.
>
> Get the word out . . .This election will change the course of American history.

My wife is a devout, I would have to say evangelical, Christian, but she just read this, shook her head, groaned a little, and got up and walked away.

Sorry guys, I live in St Paul and I'm here to tell you it never happened. Except the part about 15,000 showing up (which didn't even fill the seats) to attend the rally, and it being opened with a prayer.

The rest is Internet lies. Get a grip people. Don't you think you'd be reading about this in the Washington Post and the LA Times if this had happened? Has everyone lost their minds, and now will believe any ridiculous story being circulated on the net?

Sheesh. PLEASE repeat after me: it's only an election, it's only an election, it's only an election.

GOT THAT REPUBLICANS? This election is not the end times. GOT THAT DEMOCRATS? A Bush re-election will not result in nuclear apocalypse.

GET A GRIP!!! Or better yet, a life...

And JP Morgan had it right when he said he could always bribe one half of the working class to kill off the other half. This is EXACTLY how it happens.

People believe what fits in with their worldview, their cultural beliefs, and their values. They don't believe what doesn't fit, whether it is about religion or politics, regardless of the facts or the truth.

Which is why the US is now ruled by the Republican party establishment and their bankrollers, instead of the Democratic party and theirs, despite the fact that there are more registered Democratic voters in this country than Republican. Neither party has a majority, so we have been in a state of minority rule for decades, without the benefit of proportional representation, which would make things better balanced than it is under the current winner take all electoral college system.

However, this is the last stand in the culture wars. It is the Republican worldview that is antiquated. This is their death match, but dead the Christian fundies will be in another generation, numerically at least. Which is one reason why I'm not panicked at the thought of four more years of Bush. When you take the long view, and look at the demographics, you know that Dubya's Xtian soldiers and Mel Gibson's audience are waning, despite their current financial clout as consumers. That too will change very soon.

I know you were. But it never hurts to reinforce the message for people that the Xtian fundies, along with the Zionists, are on their way out. This is the death throes of those cultures.

We have a new day dawning, but it has nothing to do with the current US election. The political violence always gets worse before it gets better, whether in Cambodia, Palestine, South Africa, Northern Ireland, Iraq, or anywhere else.

Perspective regarding the big picture, and resolve to change the US electoral process through constitutional amendment is what is needed here. Not a victory for Kerry, which will just keep the Xtian imperialists on top for as long as the Democrats and Republicans keep pandering to them, as both are this year.

How inspiring. From the link:

"See how the power of faith can change a life, build a family and shape the destiny of a nation... Not since the days of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln has a president put so much stock in his Christian faith and prayer life for making decisions and leading the United States in its hour of crisis. According to BBC correspondent Justin Webb: "Nobody spends more time on his knees than George W. Bush. The Bush administration hums to the sound of prayer. Prayer meetings take place day and night. It's not uncommon to see White House functionaries hurrying down corridors carrying Bibles."

"This program will examine the extraordinary faith and prayer life of President George W. Bush, and how it impacts his personal life and his decisions as the leader of the free world. See how his faith has been unshakeable in dealing with the 9/11 terrorist attack, fighting al-Qaeda, ridding Iraq of the Saddam Hussein regime, rooting out terrorists in Afghanistan, and how his religious beliefs bring personal peace and clarity in a time of terrorism and chaos across the world.

"VHS approx. 70 minutes
DVD approx. 90 minutes - also includes these extra bonus features:
•Additional Bush Insider Interviews
•Bush Faith Statements from Speeches
•Historical Faith Documents
•Recommended Reading List
•Responses to FAHRENHEIT 9/11 "

What is happening to the christian religion in this country? I have family who devoutly believe this stuff about bush- whatever happened to the concept of "By their fruits you shall know them"?

It's kinda like that. There's a lot of people out there who were badly scared, as children, by the Old Testament, with all its wrath and slaughter, usally considred not fit for human behaviour. And lo, they have brought forth one ugly president.

"God told me to do it" is of course an explanation frequently given by killers.

Yes - but even more alike than that. Allah is just the Arabic word for God, so Bin Laden would be saying "The great winds of God will sweep across your nation." Or maybe Bush would be saying "a great war for Allah will rage across this nation".

And I'd not be the least bit surprised if a quote from Al Qaeda turns up summing up 911 as "Operation Shock and Awe".

"Not all who cry Lord Lord will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven."
