Subject: RE: BS: I LOVE ALL THIS SNOW From: sian, west wales Date: 23 Jan 04 - 04:23 PM Ah - snow in Britain. When we Canadians sit back and laff our socks off watching the Brits go into a blind panic at 3 flakes and a promise. Mustn't be cruel. I'm tempting fate. Probably slip and break my leg now. Subject: RE: BS: I LOVE ALL THIS SNOW From: lady penelope Date: 23 Jan 04 - 09:14 PM Although I'm a native of this land, I don't understand why the British ( as a group ) seem utterly incapable with coping with variations in the weather. I mean, we have so much of it, you'd think we'd be used to it by now. I've lived in London all my life and the last time we had snow that lasted more than three days was when I was 12 ( I'm 37 now! ). The last three winters I only had my winter coat out for a couple of weeks a year. So why did one night of sub zero temperatures ( just - approx. -3 to -9 degrees celcius ) across the southeast of England cause the utter chaos that it did? Who knows? The meterological office forcast it two days in advance, so it's not like it happen all of one sudden! I'm beginning to wonder, what came first, the weather in Britain, or the British complaining about it? I'm with Billy Conolley, there's no such thing as 'bad' weather, just the wrong sort of clothes! TTFN Lady "I want a small localised blizzard and I want it now" P. |
Subject: RE: BS: I LOVE ALL THIS SNOW From: GUEST Date: 23 Jan 04 - 09:48 PM Some parts of Britain cope very well. But cities that only as you say, experience it for more than 3 days every 25yrs are obviously not going to be geared up for it? |

Subject: RE: BS: I LOVE ALL THIS SNOW From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 24 Jan 04 - 08:39 AM I met snow once! I walked in it & slid on it, touched it & threw some at my friend Chris. It was very pretty, so white & fluffy & someone had made a small snowman. It was also cold & I wasn't dressed for it (good thing he had a second ski jacket) & my leather boots were the reason I slid nicely when he pulled me along. Such fun!! This day trip to an almost empty ski resort the week before the season started also gave me a beautiful moon memory - full moon above a snow covered mountain peak, viewed through a bare tree. What a shame I didn't have a camera. I was 40 years old when I met snow for the first & only time. I must do it again one day. sandra |

Subject: RE: BS: I LOVE ALL THIS SNOW From: Mrs.Duck Date: 24 Jan 04 - 02:26 PM Unfortunately its precisely because we do only get limited amounts of snow that it causes so many problems because we don't normally have the need to deal with major blizzards. We should all learn to just stay at home when it happens - afterall it DOES only last a couple of days MAX! Apparently the salt they use on our roads freezes at around -8 degrees so with the forecast being -15 midweek we can expect chaos. |
Subject: RE: BS: I LOVE ALL THIS SNOW From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 24 Jan 04 - 05:47 PM The salt does lots more damage to cars and the environment than it does good things by having the snow melt off the roads... |

Subject: RE: BS: I LOVE ALL THIS SNOW From: jaze Date: 25 Jan 04 - 06:28 PM Well, we're getting plenty right now in central Virginia. You're welcome to it! Actually, I wouldn't mind snow that much if it weren't for the problem of having to get to work. If there were a bus line nearby I could take, It could snow all it wants. Since there isn't and I have to get up extra early and fight off assholes in 4-wheel drives who feel impervious to ICE and nearly cause me to wreck because they lost control on ICE, I'm not especially into it. |

Subject: RE: BS: I LOVE ALL THIS SNOW From: DonMeixner Date: 27 Jan 04 - 09:52 PM 118" of snow fall so far this year in Central New York. We are ahead of last year by about a 12" for this time of the year. And last year was a record year. Februrary is is about 25% more snow than January. Syracuse, New York is on average colder than Ankleridge, Illaskya during a typical winter. New Jersey's worse snow fall is a mild mention compared to a Syracuse winter. But what is really scary is there are places in New York State that get colder and snowier. I've heard that Montana may get some snow in some places and Colorado has had some before too. But that stuff isn't lake effect snow so how bad can it be. Don |
