Subject: BS: You can do it, Raptor! From: Little Hawk Date: 27 Dec 05 - 03:11 PM Here's the thing, man. You CAN write a post that contains 150 or more words. I know you can. I have faith in you. And DON'T tell me you don't have enough time for it. I happen to know that you spend time watching birds (cough, snort!, gasp!)...and that means you have time to burn, right? Now, here's how it works. Go and study one of the political threads. Look at the posts by people like Teribus, Amos, Ron Davies, Arne what's-his-name, etc...miles and miles and miles of fervent prose. Those guys are heavy hitters, man. Well, I think you have it in you to be a heavy hitter too. Just pick a subject that interests you so much that you can't shut up about it, pour yourself a stiff drink, and start friggin' TYPING...and DON'T let up until you have said every frikkin' LAST word on the subject that you have to SAY! "Know'm sayin'??? Brinng! Know'm sayin'????" Get to it. I believe in you, man. Go for 500 words at least. Your pal, Little Hawk |

Subject: RE: BS: You can do it, Raptor! From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 27 Dec 05 - 03:16 PM Little Hawk is obviously not a Hemingway fan. |

Subject: RE: BS: You can do it, Raptor! From: Little Hawk Date: 27 Dec 05 - 03:28 PM Well, no. Not a big Hemingway fan. But he was a pretty good writer in his own way. I like the one about the "Snows of Kilimanjaro". Weird psychology, though. A real "man's man" was Hemingway. An amusing thought is this: Hemingway and D.H.Lawrence cast away on a tiny desert island and forced to put up with each other on a daily basis for a few years. |

Subject: RE: BS: You can do it, Raptor! From: Amos Date: 27 Dec 05 - 03:38 PM It was a slow day. On the Mudcat. The posts were few. The few posts were dull. Then he showed up. His post was long. Long and fervent. Impassioned. He kept on talking. He cared. He wrote on and on. I closed the window. It was a slow day. On the Mudcat. A |

|
Subject: RE: BS: You can do it, Raptor! From: Little Hawk Date: 27 Dec 05 - 04:19 PM The nice thing about writing like Hemingway is, you can put a whole Herman Melville book in about 23 pages. Very economical. |

Subject: RE: BS: You can do it, Raptor! From: Bat Goddess Date: 27 Dec 05 - 04:20 PM Speaking of Hemingway, has anyone else heard "A Visit From St. Nicholas" as written by Hemingway? (Parody by James Thurber in the New Yorker in 1927.) Heard it on public radio earlier this month and just found it in print at the New Yorker's website. Linn |

Subject: RE: BS: You can do it, Raptor! From: Little Hawk Date: 27 Dec 05 - 06:43 PM Come on, Raptor. I expect a lennnnnngthy response to this. An essay. A voluminous exposition of your most pithy thoughts and observations, couched in elegant language, and sparing no expansiveness of polemic and puissant grandeur. |

Subject: RE: BS: You can do it, Raptor! From: GUEST,Kent Ovation Date: 27 Dec 05 - 10:05 PM He came home. To an empty house. The lights were on. That was a waste of power. But he didn't care. What did it matter anymore? Outside the power lines were buzzing. A train rumbled by. He eyed the clock on the wall. 3:45. He eyed the shotgun. A dull gleam on the cold steel. They found him the next day. A sardine can was wedged in his jaws. It was a Norwegian sardine can. Hell of a way to die on the last day of January 1945. |

Subject: RE: BS: You can do it, Raptor! From: Charmion Date: 28 Dec 05 - 04:45 PM Norwegian sardines in January 1945? Not Pygmalion likely! The coastline was mined, and herring fishermen tend to be smart. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: You can do it, Raptor! From: Little Hawk Date: 28 Dec 05 - 05:04 PM Perhaps it was a rather old can of Norwegian sardines? Besides, does one stop sardining for a mere war? Never! Hey, Raptor! Hey! |
|
Subject: RE: BS: You can do it, Raptor! From: Charmion Date: 28 Dec 05 - 05:09 PM Yes, one stopped sardining in Norway during the war if one did not wish to become bait oneself -- or arrested by the Gestapo, which could come down to the same thing. Why couldn't the sardines in question have been good old Connors Bros from Halifax? Details, Little Hawk, details! |
|
Subject: RE: BS: You can do it, Raptor! From: Little Hawk Date: 28 Dec 05 - 05:14 PM Come on. You telling me the Germans didn't want sardines too? ;-) How about black market sardines? I'm thinking we oughta start a thread with nothing but Hemingway parodies on it. |
