Subject: RE: A Complete Unknown 2024 film, Dylan & Newport From: Hagman Date: 03 Feb 25 - 09:39 PM Yep, certainly looks like him, and yes, on closer inspection, it's a bouzouki, not a mandolin. The sound is murky, so can't confirm that's what he's playing.... It's a very brief shot while Dylan and "Sylvie" walk past (for those with access to "advance" copies of the film, it's at 1'40"18.) Go see the film, Helen - it's a lot of fun. (So many historical inaccuracies, but it's a film, not a doco. "Sylvie" wasn't at Newport '65, neither was Johnny Cash, and I really don't think Bob rode there from NYC on his Triumph, for a start....) Chalamet is uncanny and extraordinary, and the rest of the cast is terrific and well-played, except for Grossman, who is portrayed as an over-blown cartoon-character. |

Subject: RE: A Complete Unknown 2024 film, Dylan & Newport From: GUEST,henryp Date: 04 Feb 25 - 02:34 PM It's an excellent film and very enjoyable. Many of the events happened, though not necessarily as portrayed in the film. But Chalamet is utterly plausible. The songs are carefully chosen to match the events, which they probably did as Bob saw things. I assume the appearance of the motorbike is an indication that an accident lies ahead, although that is beyond the script of this film. To me, Bob comes out of it as talented, single-minded and selfish. |
Subject: RE: A Complete Unknown 2024 film, Dylan & Newport From: Hagman Date: 05 Feb 25 - 02:11 AM Yep, Henryp, agreed - the motorcycle stuff - especially the finale - was definitely a portent/allegory of things to come. And they could have made him even more single-minded and selfish, and it still would have come off..... |
Subject: RE: A Complete Unknown 2024 film, Dylan & Newport From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Mar 25 - 06:55 PM This film is currently available on Hulu. I have a premium Spotify account, and I just found out Hulu is included. The film was wonderful. It showed Dylan's difficult personality. It also showed him as having a special kinship with Woody Guthrie, who could also be difficult. Don't know if that's true, but it's interesting to consider. -Joe- |

Dialogue a bit hard to hear at times. You do need to bear in mind that it's not a documentary. And didn't the band in the Irish pub remind you of "The Pogues" ? |

Subject: RE: A Complete Unknown 2024 film, Dylan & Newport From: Fred Date: 28 Mar 25 - 05:02 AM On reflection, "hero" is a little strong. I'd say that Bob Dylan inspired me. There were others in the 60s, and I loved what they were doing, but they didn't make me want to take up the guitar and that's what Dylan did. Fred |
Subject: RE: A Complete Unknown 2024 film, Dylan & Newport From: GUEST,henryp Date: 30 Mar 25 - 11:53 AM https://calendar.songfacts.com/january/29/16754; 29 January 1961 Five days after arriving in New York from Minnesota, Bob Dylan meets his ailing folk hero, Woody Guthrie, tracking him down in East Orange, New Jersey. Dylan pays tribute with "Song To Woody," which appears on his first album the following year. The Gleasons let visitors come by when Woody was with them, and some folk singers, including Pete Seeger, Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Phil Ochs, who often stopped by. Dylan found out how to find Woody when he went to the Guthrie home in Brooklyn and talked to Woody's 13-year-old son, Arlo. More on the Songfacts website. |
