The way you determine the common, ordinary ass (arse) from an Ass like Jethro is simple. If it's Jethro, then "Ass" is capitalized, as in "Jethro the Ass". Also...your ass (your arse) is always behind you, while Jethro might be behind you (and if he is, watch out!), but he might also be in front of you, beside you, or over in the next yard.

You live and learn. I have always thought a donkey was a donkey, and mules & asses were the same thing, the cross breed with a horse.

Donkeys were a big thing when I was a child, riding them on Blackpool beach. For some reason, I have always wanted one. We have a bit of land, a few paddocks, (mainly rented out to horsey type people, but a smaller one near the house doing nothing) and there is a donkey sanctuary not far away.

The situation is this. I refuse to keep chickens. She refuses to have a donkey. However, during peace talks in Geneva, she conceded I could have my donkey if she got her chickens, I reserved my view for the time being.

What do you think? The greyhound ignores horses and won't get near chickens anyway. Be buggered if I know what to do? I said at the outset that buying an old farmhouse is not a precursor to giving Dr Doolittle a run for his money.

I think she's right, Musket. Having chickens is a great idea. They are fun, entertaining...a bit noisy...but that's allright...and you get fresh eggs. Having a donkey is also a great idea. Do both, I say. The Greyhound will have a bit more to think about, and that'll be good too, because most domestic dogs suffer a good deal from boredom.

Chickens are not noisy. Rooster type chickens are noisy so ya gotta eat them when they are young and tastey or sell em. I would eat em.

I bought a cowboy type hat in South Africa last year. Seemed a good idea there but makes you look a right pillock over here.

Methinks sat on a donkey, I could pull it off. Especially if off down to the jewellers shop to prospect a gold sovereign or two.

Gold sovereigns are lovely coins. Pity they aren't in regular circulation any longer, but if they were, it would reveal how much the value of the fiat currencies has declined. I sold a few last year when gold was way high, but I kind of hated to part with them.

I grew up with horses and rode them a great deal but I remember a donkey that my dad came home with, one day. Her name was Flossie and she could be ridden although a walk was her preferred gait. Took a long time to get from Point A to Point B. There was little or no spring to her step so the movement was quite vertical rather than rhythmic and not what one could comfortable.

Still, I rode her for the novelty of it. I remember one time when I rode her into the back 40 of the about 400 acres we had to roam around in. Took me practically all day to get back.
