Subject: BS: We need more squids around here! From: Rapparee Date: 22 Feb 08 - 03:06 PM We do! The Giant Squid only checks into the Tavern and there just ain't many little squids running around the Cafe. If more squids don't start showing up I'll have to start jiggin' for them. And why not? Squids are cute and cuddly and more loyal to you than, say, a cat. |

Subject: RE: BS: We need more squids around here! From: Bat Goddess Date: 22 Feb 08 - 07:45 PM Squid are decapods not octopods -- mostly. I prefer to collect anatomically correct (moreor less) non-edible squid for my collection. Bait squid (also made out of rubber-like substance) have fringes rather than tentacles. But I've got some in my collection (thanks, Sins) along with cuttlefish, a couple octopus, and a lot of squid ranging from very realistic rubber ones, rhinestoned squid jewelry, ceramic chopstick rests, and, of course, a wonderful kitchen whisk that not only looks really cool sitting on the shelf, but is the BEST whisk I've ever used. Also have a lovely carved wooden netsuke thanks to my sister and a neat squid writing implement as well. Oh, and silver squid earrings. Why doesn't anyone make squid lawn ornaments?!? Yard squid! Subject: RE: BS: We need more squids around here! From: bobad Date: 22 Feb 08 - 07:56 PM Pardon my pedantry but: "Although we talk of tentacles, squid specialists distinguish between true tentacles and arms. All octopuses have eight arms, which they use to crawl along the sea floor. Squids and cuttlefish also have eight arms but in addition have two much longer tentacles, which can be shot out to grab prey." http://www.abc.net.au/science/ocean/monsters/tentacles.htm |

Subject: RE: BS: We need more squids around here! From: Joe_F Date: 22 Feb 08 - 09:05 PM Charley: But those are *octopuses*, which are well known to be more lascivious than squid. Some years ago some undersea explorers took a movie of a homosexual encounter between octopuses of different species. A still from it was published in _Science_. I suppose, as with sheep, it is the kind of thing it would be nice to be able to say you'd done, especially if they suck. |

Subject: RE: BS: We need more squids around here! From: Charley Noble Date: 23 Feb 08 - 10:59 AM There's a sucker-lover born again every minute, to paraphrase old P.T. Barnhum. Of course even the original quote attribution has been challenged: "'There's a sucker born every minute' is a phrase often credited to P.T. Barnum (1810 – 1891), an American showman. It is generally taken to mean that there are (and always will be) a lot of gullible people in the world. However, when Barnum's biographer tried to track down when Barnum had uttered this phrase, all of Barnum's friends and acquaintances told him it was out of character. Barnum's credo was more along the lines of "there's a customer born every minute" — he wanted to find ways to draw new customers in all the time because competition was fierce and people bored easily. While some sources claim the quote is most likely from famous con-man Joseph ("Paper Collar Joe") Bessimer,[1] it was actually uttered by David Hannum, spoken in reference to Barnum's part in the Cardiff Giant Hoax. Hannum, who was exhibiting the original giant and had sued Barnum unsuccessfully for exhibiting a copy and claiming it was the original, was referring to the crowds continuing to pay to see Barnum's exhibit even after both it and the original had been proven to be fakes."
