Subject: Searching for name of the artist From: GUEST,flintcount Date: 26 May 15 - 03:15 PM Hi guys, i have a problem. I'm searching for artist which i heard somewhere and i've got one mp3 from this guy - but there were no band name or song name. That's the video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2i_tPkLe1Y. I can't find this guy for 6 months. Things i discovered: - he is Scottish - he isn't old, must be between 30-40 i think I've found two more songs on my pc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EfABzA-vCw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0laVRQz1t00 I'll be very grateful if you can help me. Sorry for my english, i don't know if it is bad or good, i live in Poland. |

Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist From: Noreen Date: 26 May 15 - 06:06 PM Where/who did you get the mp3 from? That would seem the most likely route to finding who and what it is. I don't recognise the singer or the songs, and googling some of the phrases didn't bring up anything- presumably self-composed songs. Good luck. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist From: GUEST,flintcount Date: 27 May 15 - 08:33 AM That's the problem. I've found it on my pc with name "123". I don't know how i downloaded it... |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist From: GUEST,flintcount Date: 29 May 15 - 12:27 PM Anyone knows something? |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist From: FreddyHeadey Date: 29 May 15 - 12:42 PM idk but have you done a google search for the name of the file? Searched your browser history? Would the mp3 be dated when you received it or when it was created? If you end up reposting this question you might get a better response if you include a bit more in the title, like Does anyone recognise this 1970s Scottish male folk/blues singer please. If you can, type out some of the lyrics. And mention why/if it is so important to you. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist From: GUEST,flintcount Date: 29 May 15 - 05:46 PM The name of the file is only "123". I received this mp3 6 months ago, but there is no date of creation. I don't know what it is. It sounds like a riddle, But when i hear this music, i feel strong. My soul is dancing. That's my artist, that's the song which i'd like to have on my funeral. I don't know if i was drunk, if it is a joke, but guys (and ladies?) - I NEED YOUR HELP. Because i live in central Poland my english isn't good and searching artists in google is too hard for me, folks. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist From: Bainbo Date: 29 May 15 - 05:55 PM This song (click here) is certainly one of the ones you've linked to. It's sung by Matt McGinn. Listening to his voice, he could be person on your recording, and the arrangement sounds similar as well. Have a listen and see what you think. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist From: FreddyHeadey Date: 29 May 15 - 08:32 PM If you're looking for other tracks by him watch out that he is not the only Matt McGinn more :http://www.last.fm/music/Matt+McGinn/+wiki |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist From: deepdoc1 Date: 29 May 15 - 09:57 PM It's a long shot, but if the mp3 tags were ever edited, there may be info in the file properties. Right-click the file name -> Properties -> Details tab. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist From: GUEST,Phil Date: 29 May 15 - 10:22 PM What deepdoc1 said +check the metadata from within your mp3 player as well. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist From: Tattie Bogle Date: 30 May 15 - 02:32 PM The voice on your clips doesn't sound like Matt McGinn's, it's deeper and more sonorous - even though Bainbo has posted one of the songs being sung by Matt McGinn. (Who sadly died over 30 years ago). Sounds like someone trying to copy him maybe. As Guest said on 26th May, try messaging the person who put up the videos. |

Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist From: Tattie Bogle Date: 30 May 15 - 05:25 PM A man of many aliases then, as the YouTube poster calls himself Stillie!(Or Flintcount??) |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist From: GUEST,flintcount Date: 07 Jun 15 - 04:19 AM I met one guy who knows him... but he said, that he can't tell me his name. That his discovery is worth too much and i have to find him on my own. Some clues? I know that he's probably alive still. Nothing more... As i said, my english is too bad to find him on my own. I don't know what to do now... |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist From: Jim McLean Date: 07 Jun 15 - 05:04 AM I agree with Tattie Bogle tat the singer on the clips in post 1 is definitely NOT Matt McGinn, an old friend. Bainbo's clip IS of Matt. I do not know who the imitator is but probably some "exile" Scot living in America who makes a living imitating Scottish singers, rolling is "RS", probably wears a kilt. America and Australia are full of them. The Irish suffer the same fate. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist From: GUEST,flintcount Date: 07 Jun 15 - 05:59 AM Damn it... that's painful. I must hear his music in my house. I don't know what to do next... |

Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist From: GUEST,flintcount Date: 08 Jun 15 - 08:08 AM His music makes my soul dancing. This music is the best music, i've ever heard, really. I want to hear his music in my house. I want to hear his music on my funeral. I want to hear his music everywhere. I feel strong, when i hear his music. That's why i want his name. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist From: Rain Dog Date: 08 Jun 15 - 09:50 AM It would probably be a good idea to ask the question on YouTube as well |

Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,Fasteddy Date: 19 Jun 15 - 03:55 AM Sounds a bit like Alastair McDonald |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,kenny Date: 19 Jun 15 - 04:21 AM Don't think so. Have to admit, I'm totally stumped with this one too. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,Allan Conn Date: 19 Jun 15 - 07:52 AM I'm not so sure the singer is Scottish. I mean he could be putting on an American accent in the third song. I wouldn't be surprised though if it is more of an American putting on a Scottish accent in the first two songs! The rolling r's just sound too pronounced and forced. Whether he is American or Scottish he seems to be trying to sound like Matt McGinn except for in the third song of course! |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,flintcount Date: 19 Jun 15 - 08:08 AM Sorry guys for opening next thread. I'm very sad that i can't find him since end of 2014. I sent a message to one scottish guy - he may know something. |

Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: Jeri Date: 19 Jun 15 - 10:30 AM It sounds to me as if the Scots accent is put-on and the American one is natural. It's possible the only place the recordings may be is on flintcount's computer, but maybe someone will remember hearing a local guy... |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,flintcount Date: 19 Jun 15 - 12:51 PM He's too good to be only "local" guy, he must have site or something... I'm waiting for results with big hope. |

Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,flintcount Date: 21 Jun 15 - 05:26 AM Don't be so offensive, my friend, please. Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,flintcount Date: 23 Jun 15 - 03:02 PM Guys, i think i need to find more sites with folk or scottish music. Can you help me? Or even make a thread if you have account on other sites. I'll be very grateful, because i stay in the same place for almost 3 weeks. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,Allan Conn Date: 23 Jun 15 - 07:20 PM You've had several Scots including myself suggest that the singer doesn't really sound Scottish. Scotland is a small country and the folk community is quite well known to each other. Had he been a Scottish singer who was known in any way then I'm sure somebody (ie especially the likes of Jack) would know of him! I think North America is a better bet though even at that if he is someone who is only known in his home town etc then it may be a long shot. The guy might only have made several home made vids and not be a gigging musician. |

Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: Megan L Date: 27 Jun 15 - 09:13 AM Flincount that has been a month none of the Scottish contributors or anyone else for that matter have recognised the person. Unless someone who actually knows the person stumbles across this thread your question is unlikely to be answered in the way you wish. Time to try other places. Keep a note of the thread title and every few months if you have not been lucky elsewhere check back by placing the threat title in the filter box and choosing your time scale. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: FreddyHeadey Date: 27 Jun 15 - 10:15 AM Yes to what Megan L suggests, assuming she means 'thread title'...;-) Maybe, if you can't track down this particular artist :-( you could ask what similar artists mudcatters would suggest. Apart from these three examples at the moment we don't know what sort of / names of other music you enjoy or reject. My hunch is that the recordings are a few decades old and not many people in the whole world will know of him now. And I'll ask again, can you or have you gone back through your browser history PAGE BY PAGE round the time you think you downloaded these tracks? |

Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,Anne Neilson Date: 27 Jun 15 - 11:15 AM I was niggled by the thought that it might be Watt Nicoll -- a Scottish singer and writer of (mainly) comic songs in the late 60s and 70s. I was never familiar enough with his repertoire to recognise these tracks posted here, but there is some material on Youtube. After a while he seemed to disappear from the scene, but I believe he went to the US and trained as a motivational speaker (and maybe even a hypnotist?), working there for many years. Within the past three or four years he reappeared in Britain with the focus on his consultancy work. I tried to look him up on Wikipedia but didn't get too far…. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,kenny Date: 27 Jun 15 - 12:16 PM Sorry Anne - fairly certain it's not Watt Nicoll, but a good suggestion. No Dundee enough ! He was known professionally as "The Man", and I believe at one point was brought in to motivate the Scottish football team at a World Cup. No' one of his most successful results, I think. The mystery continues.................. |

Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,Anne Neilson Date: 29 Jun 15 - 04:47 PM And it's NOT Archie Fisher -- or Battlefield. The style is more punchy and vigorous, along the lines of Gaberlunzie (although they were a duo, rather than a solo turn). And the text is more direct/less subtle than anyone Scottish would expect from the two performers named. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,Chris Wright Date: 30 Jun 15 - 01:08 AM Pretty sure it's the band that go by the name 'Longshot Nelson and the Disjoints', who seem to be a contemporary band, despite the retro sound. 'Creative Recluse' at nelsonschainsaws.tumblr.com/ says he is... "Also known as JB Nelson, Sleepy Eyes Nelson and Longshot Nelson." It would be interesting to know what his real name is. I wonder if anyone in Scotland has seen him performing? There are vids of him at the State Bar Glasgow & Jazz Bar Edinburgh(see his YT uploads page) 'Sleepy Eyes' Nelson seems to do American bluesey tracks www.facebook.com/sleepynelson 'Longshot' Nelson does Scottish tracks 'JB' Nelson does Gothic Americana,Dark Country,Alternative, Experimental stuff. and also lists The God Channel : Experimental - Noise - Industrial Sundowner : Synth Pop - Industrial - Dark Soundtrack He operates a small record label cheapwinerecords.bandcamp.com/ which lists other artists. I wonder how many are him too. I have asked btw. His YouTube page has an 'About' saying he is base in Scotland www.youtube.com/user/nelsonschainsaws/about & lots of uploads.
