This was heard about 15 years ago on NPR. It took place during WWII, with a house full of the women of one family, multi-generations, with all but one of their men off to war. According to the person who told me about it, they go through a succession of army officers coming to the house to tell them of another male relative killed in the war, until it finally comes down to the older woman, mother or aunt of the others. Up to this point, it has been a fairly ordinary play with lots of camaraderie, etc.

When the army comes to tell the older woman about her man's death, they offer her $3,000 in compensation. The stunning end of the play, listeners here her refusing their money, saying if she takes it, it will mean she sold her man to them to be killed and she doesn't ever want them to think it was okay to take him away and have him get killed.

I am not telling it very well, but it sounded stunning and I'd really like to hear it. A quick search on google didn't come up with anything. Do any of you remember it?

Thanks!

kat

Kat ... I was in this play some 18 years ago ... fabulous play! I was one of the sisters! My memory is sketchy but I can easily find out any info you're looking for. It was during this play that I sang on stage for the very first time "Jada Jada Jada Jada Jing Jing Jing"!

There's a reference to “Ladyhouse Blues” on author Kevin O'Morrision's Website. He just indicates it was an hour-long shortening of the full stage play.

You might try asking NPR if they have a tape for sale.

Oooh! CLICK! Not it, but iuntersting.

========================================================

The correct spelling (for searching) appears to be LADYHOUSE BLUES.

========================================================

Author info: Kevin O'Morrison (kevin@seanet.com)

Agent: Samuel Liff, William Morris Agency New York, United States

Published works:

Fiction-- A Party For Lovers, The Morgan Yard, Ladyhouse Blues

========================================================

That's about it, from NPR, Google, etc., except that the play is in print and performed in nearly every city in the USA on a regular basis! *G* I think that it is still so actively performed that it is unlikely a radio broadcast of it would be licensed for sale on be hung on the internet-- it would diminish the value of the scripts to have the play "out there" for nothing.

Sorry!

~Susan

Thanks, Mark and Susan. Good to know it has carried on. My friend heard it just once on NPR about 15 years ago.

Mark, I thought about contacting NPR, but hadn't gone beyond a fruitless search of their website. Thanks for the idea.
