Subject: RE: English lyrics to trad. French songs? From: Geoff the Duck Date: 29 Jun 03 - 01:55 PM Are you looking for specific songs, or just trying to establish a general source? If the former - try listing ones you need. Some Mudcatter might already have lyrics. A specific request often produces a quick answer from the forum. Quack! Geoff the Duck. |

Subject: Lyr Add: LA ROSE BLANCHE From: masato sakurai Date: 03 Jul 03 - 09:03 AM Only one song (French-Canadian) has been found in Favorite French Folk Songs (p. 94). LA ROSE BLANCHE (The White Rose) 1. Early upon a summer's day, Early upon a summer's day, I woke at break of dawn, so gay, Just as the day was dawning. 2. Into the garden I made my way, (2) To pluck a pretty rose, so gay, To pluck a prettyt rosebud. 3. As I was plucking the rose, so gay (2) My lover came along that way, My lover came a-calling... 4. "Dear, will you pick me a fine bouquet? (2) Of pretty roses, white and gay, Of roses, white abd pretty?" 5. As I was picking a fine bouquet, (2) I tripped--alas, and lack-a-day! I tripped and broke my ankle. 6. "Go get the doctor quick, I say, (2) The city doctor, right away! The doctor from the city." 7. "Oh, dear doctor, tell me, pray, (2) How shall I cure my ankle, say-- How shall I cure my ankle?" 8. "Into a golden bowl, I say, (2) Put water and white roses gay, Put water and white roses. 9. "Then you must bathe your foot all day, (2) And that, my dear's, the only way, To cure a broken ankle." |
Subject: RE: English lyrics to trad. French songs? From: Mrrzy Date: 03 Jul 03 - 09:25 AM Les canuts - is that the one that goes Nous sommes les canuts, nous sommes tous nus... I could translate that one. To sing "beni creator" you need golden robes (bis), we weave them for those great church folk, but we poor Canuts don't even have shirts. We are the Canuts, we are all nude. To govern you need coats and ribbons and (something, sorry, bis), we weave them for those great city folk but we poor Canuts are buried without [winding] sheets. We are the Canuts, we are all nude. Our reign will come when theirs ends (bis), and we will weave the shroud of the old world since we already hear the revolution growling. We are the Canuts, we won't be nude any more. It isn't poetry... and I wish I knew the others. Try Al(l?)an Mills, who sings in both English and French, usually the same songs. |
