Subject: RE: BS: Do Leg Men like Teddies? From: GUEST,fred miller Date: 22 Jul 04 - 11:55 PM for some reason or other teddies don't add any attraction or charm for me, but seem a mere token of wanting to please. They're like pushing the elevator button twice--it doesn't really do anything, but there it is. Also, teddies tend to make a figure look oddly short-waisted. I'd recommend instead an ice-skating type of garb. Leg men are required by nature to like ice-skating, and too-ostentatiously sexy things like teddies have a sad pathos, like a cover band that does impressions of the original singers. Teddies look like one is just dressed up as 'sexy'. Good acting as in theatre acting is the best form of lingerie. It's scarily attractive. always make your s.o. do theatre, and do it well. dance counts. |

Subject: RE: BS: Do Leg Men like Teddies? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 23 Jul 04 - 11:20 AM Bert, thanks for supplying that information. I remember a Mudcatter starting that business posting links to her lingerie shop a couple of years ago, but I didn't go back to look for it. Those teddies aren't meant for women to enjoy wearing. They're meant for their partners to enjoy taking them off. It's an intimate transaction, with this kind of lingerie. (There are other types of teddies that are much cleaner lines, looser, and are actually a nice alternative to wearing a slip under a dress or skirt and that make a blouse and slacks feel much better.) Bruce, here's a site for you, sans teddies. This is the original site of the photos, but I can't get it to load properly with the firewall that I use. SRS |

Thus, in a Sherlock Holmesean manner, using the process of elementary deduction, I am now informed as to what exactly teddies are. You are a gentleman and a scholar, sir. I salute you. Now I'm going back to salute the art. Fred, I think you are an excellent thinker and writer. I don't always 'agree' with your views, but I always read them. You had listed some people like that on another thread, and I just wanted you to know I thought you should have listed yourself, too. From: Stilly River Sage Date: 23 Jul 04 - 11:43 PM Funny thing is, I ain't a "he," I'm straight, and I like that art also (not the teddies particularly, but the Italian photo art). That's a combination of attractive women, talented photographers, and great settings. And black and white is a very seductive form for art photos. (Heck with these "Glamour Shot" makeup and hair places that were so popular in the 1990s--if I could find a place that would take this kind of photo for/of me I'd love it!) The body is art as well as sensual and erotic. What a concept! SRS |

SRS--I could paint it for you. I think it was Annamill who designs lingere--it was nice looking. I agree--b&w and other ways of being a little more bold, stylized, it adds something by taking away something. The only sensual paintings i've done lately are very close-cropped faces. They suggest nudity by leaving it out. Funny how well that works, and how it helps eliminate the problem of looking like an ad. All those women in ads--makes it hard for artists to look like something different. |

Subject: RE: BS: Do Leg Men like Teddies? From: GUEST,fred miller Date: 25 Jul 04 - 01:29 AM difficult! It's difficult enough not to look like some other painter, after centuries of painted figures, but then you don't want to look like you're advertising some non-existent product or other. People wonder why artists do odd things--desperation to find a voice or style that isn't used up, usually. As you get older maybe you prefer to hide your edge, and just look banal anyway. and, yes, it's hard, also. let other people be vulcans and not understand these strange human groping affections and affectations, the idea behind the hickey, for example--what IS that? I get it, most all of it, but some of it is a little tired, blatant, dull, like teddies. I think teddies were probably invented by censors so that you can say "sexy" on t.v. without actually being too sexy. Then people bought into it. Look! up in the sky! it's a bird, it's a plane--it's sexy! Teddies are around, to be 'sexy', but like this keyboard I'm typing on, which was designed to slow down typing so the keys won't jam, even though there aren't any keys to jam. There should be a word for such clunky, ill-intended things that persist, against better sense, to accomodate those who've already bought into it. In conclusion, I like legs. Once when I quit a job I told a guy there that the two things I would miss most were my friend Kim's legs. He said And? what's the other other thing? No that's it, the right one, and the left one. But I don't care much for teddies. |
Subject: RE: BS: Do Leg Men like Teddies? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 25 Jul 04 - 02:40 AM of course! Sorry for yanking your chain. It's so easy to do on this kind of thread. Sex sells--and one hopes that what it sells in the context of this art is sensuality and joy. |

Subject: RE: BS: Do Leg Men like Teddies? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 25 Jul 04 - 12:06 PM John, Some of those are still very sexy--when you take in the concept of "less is more" (in the sense of "less skin" can be more titilating). A few of those bear (bare!) a striking similarity to the Italian photos. I have a couple of books I found in the attic at my great aunt's home many years ago. I was an heir of her estate, and this was the family home where several siblings had returned after spouses died. Those who were unmarried seemed to have stayed there with my great grandmother. My great uncle had a workshop in the attic, and he had a collection of books that evidently came in the proverbial "plain brown wrappers." When you see how conservative these once risque materials are, it makes you wonder about how much more buried the sex trade and market must have been back in the early twentieth century. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: Do Leg Men like Teddies? From: JohnInKansas Date: 25 Jul 04 - 02:35 PM SRS - We found the "vintage" site while searching for "period costumes" for a theme party. They seem to have added quite a lot of stuff since I went through it some time ago, although the original pages probably have the most "appealing" pictures. (The recent additions are all the "kinky" pages.) There are links there indicating that the site owner has an interest in a "toy shop," although they're not pushy about it so maybe this site is more hobby than advertising. John |

She is fairly slim in these, but even as she matured, she was always considered very sexy (as an exception to the rule, of course). How about Queen Latifah? There are many other examples, of course. But ours is a society that (in the film arts, at least) considers beautiful women over the hill when they're past 40 or over 110 pounds. Robert Redford is a notable exception--I remember reading a quote from him that he thought women grew into their beauty, and were more attractive as they got older. Subject: RE: BS: Do Leg Men like Teddies? From: Peace Date: 01 Aug 04 - 03:31 AM The Victorian Era is characterized as a time of sexual repression. Although some people managed to enjoy sex and be sexually expressive, the general attitude was that sex was sinful, dirty, and even unhealthy. Masturbation was considered seriously dangerous to your health. It was in this era that pornography was legally outlawed for the first time. Of course (think about human nature), an underground porn scene flourished. For example, a magazine called "The Pearl," containing dirty poems and serialized sexy novels was secretively circulated. Motion pictures began in 1894, and just two short years later, an actress bares all in "Le Bain," a French film (7). It didn't take long for things to get racier, and by the beginning of the 20th century, the predecessors of the modern porn flick were being made. "the pearl", pornography This is in answer to SRS's post on July 25. |
Subject: RE: BS: Do Leg Men like Teddies? From: Peace Date: 02 Aug 04 - 03:29 AM Sorry. Just noticed that I did not say to google "the pearl", pornography. That is where I took the above from. It is one of the top three sites. |

Subject: RE: BS: Do Leg Men like Teddies? From: Kim C Date: 02 Aug 04 - 01:53 PM Brucie, the Victorian Era may be characterized as a time of sexual repression... but Queen Victoria herself had 9 children (or something like that), and not a one was adopted. Meaning no disrespect, but she was crazy about Albert, and they were pretty busy, if you get my meaning. Anyhow, I've come to the conclusion that people in the 19th century were only "repressed" in polite company; meaning simply that they didn't talk about sex in public, because it was considered a private matter. That was the "ideal," anyhow; but let's face it, a group of women, or a group of men, can get into some pretty randy conversations. I don't believe that's anything at all new. An interesting book on the subject is "The Story the Soldiers Wouldn't Tell: Sex and the Civil War." There was another book I read about women in the Victorian era that talked more about it, but I can't remember the name of it. Teddies are all right, but I prefer nice gowns. |
Subject: RE: BS: Do Leg Men like Teddies? From: Peace Date: 02 Aug 04 - 02:23 PM Kim C: I had not meant to suggest otherwise. The stuff I posted was in response to something SRS said earlier. The notion that sex is something new is strange. Just look at world population figures. What you say about repression is true. Even in my mother's day, women were perceived to be loose if they smoked in public. However, they did smoke in private. My grandmother told me that "some girls" used to get pennyroyal from the drug store to use as a 'morning after' tonic. And all one has to do is read the history of the condom to realize that sex could be here to stay, because it sure as shootin' has been here since the beginning of this thing we call life. |
Subject: RE: BS: Do Leg Men like Teddies? From: frogprince Date: 02 Aug 04 - 08:55 PM Kim and brucie have a lot of it right, but you don't have to go back as far as Victorian times to see some deeper aspects of repressive attitudes. A few years ago I stumbled on a Webster's Dictionary from the 1930's: "orgasm" was defined as "immoderate sexual excitement"; the sole and complete definition given for "masturbation" was "self pollution". |
Subject: RE: BS: Do Leg Men like Teddies? From: Peace Date: 03 Aug 04 - 12:49 AM Foolestroupe, In my younger days I encountered a paperback edition of "The Pearl" in a second-hand bookstore. And it wasn't by Steinbeck. I bought it and read it. It was a fascinating read, more for the Victorian English than the content--which was quite tame by today's standards. (The maid, coachmen, mistress and master of the manor or estate or what ever the heck they were in besides each other; myriad combinations of the above in permutations imaginable only by mathemeticians or people given to that sort of thing.) I though at the time that this sorta stuff only happened in the movies. Anyway, I was surprised to see that it was a serialized group of 'cliff hangers' based on sex--fashioned after the work of Dickens in books like "Great Expectations". I didn't get through the entire book because frankly it was boring to read about it all. Pornography has changed somewhat, but I find it is more about the subjugation of women today than it was then. That might be of interest to a sociologist. I wrote a paper on that for a course in university some twenty years ago. That's probably more than you wanted to know, but be aware that I got a chuckle from your remark--if indeed it was directed to me. Bruce M |

Subject: RE: BS: Do Leg Men like Teddies? From: Kim C Date: 03 Aug 04 - 12:31 PM Frogprince, I don't know for sure, but those definitions may have had more to do with the prevailing indecency laws than they did with repression. If the definitions had been too explicit, the dictionary might not have got printed. That's just a guess, though. |
