Yes, MaJo.. I've been following that Tina Peters case for awhile. MSNBC reported on it just recently. There were some folks in Georgia who made videos of allowing machine tamperers in. I can't remember what happened to them.

From: Ebbie

I just listened to Elon Musk speaking in Pennsylvania explaining to the audience that this election may be the last free election, that if Trump doesn’t win, our Constitution will be rendered null and void, that the ‘other’ side is trying to destroy America and all it stands for. This is not the first time I have heard MAGA present itself that way. It’s the equivalent of “God is on our side.” On BOTH sides.

Is 'God' sitting in the dining room watching the battle on his television, chortling all the while?

There is a tune that we do, called The End of the World, from the long-ago dobro-playing Oswald Kirby. Players on the various instruments in our group take their turn at being featured, but because I can no longer play guitar because of my frozen shoulder I wrote a couple of verses to the tune, which we all sing when it’s my turn. They go:
“When the darkness gathers ‘round, silently, without sound
Voices bleak seem to speak through the gloom
Everything will disappear, erasing all that I hold dear
Then I believe that I can see the end of the world.

“But with the coming of the dawn when all trace of dark has gone
And the Earth knows its worth, again will bloom
And bright sun’s sweet caress brings me hope and happiness
Then I can see there’ll never be an end of the world.”

And that is the hope I cling to.

Right after Trump was elected a guy in Seattle started a Twitter account called "What the Fuck Just Happened Today?" and he would sum up the day's news in one long run-on sentence, followed by links to the news organizations where each phrase was sourced. I subscribed, and he kept it going during the Biden administration, more or less still focused on the bad behavior of The Former Guy. This came out on Tuesday (numbered by the day of the current administration):
Welcome to Day 1372.

Today in one sentence: 14 days until Election Day; more than 400 doctors and health professionals called on Trump to release his medical records, questioning his mental and physical fitness to serve; Trump has made more than 100 threats to investigate, prosecute, imprison, or punish his perceived opponents since 2022; Elon Musk, Trump’s billionaire backer, told the Life Center megachurch "that no one’s even bothering to try to kill Kamala" because it would be "pointless"; Trump’s plans for mass deportations, tariffs, and tax cuts would drive Social Security to insolvency by 2031 – three years earlier than currently projected; the Biden administration proposed a rule requiring private health insurance plans to cover over-the-counter birth control at no cost to patients; 79% of Republicans favor putting undocumented immigrants in encampments; and 60% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 support Harris for president.

Here's the site if anyone is interested in following along. You don't have to pay to read it.

Thanks for your verse of hope, Ebbie.

I think it is more useful to focus on hope than on doom and gloom, and in the U.S. it is especially important in motivating people to vote. If they focus on despair they think there is no point in voting because the result is perceived to be inevitable. If they think their vote can make a difference, they will vote.

The image of God sitting in a room of a house reminds me of my favourite cartoon ever. I saw it in a book about sci-fi many decades ago and I have a copy of it filed away somewhere safe, i.e. I can't remember where it is, so I can't give the name of the cartoonist.

Briefly, a man is in a space ship, travelling far, far away in the universe, sees lots of signs saying "Go back, end of the universe" then God (portrayed as a bearded old man) is sitting in his lounge room when a teeny-tiny spaceship jumps out of his aquarium-style container and lands on the floor. He picks it up, puts it on the mantle piece and says, "I'll just put that with all the others" and there are a few more spaceships lined up on the shelf.

Sorry for the discussion detour.

Trump is hosting a rally at Madison Square Garden. I sure hope there is an independent head-counter there to let us know how many New Yorkers give a rats ass about Trump to attend a rally.

Meanwhile, Harris is walking into the lion's den - small events in Philadelphia, primarily focussing on Black men, some of whom have dismissed her because of old lies told by Trump (about her prosecuting Black men in California and locking them up; in fact, she had programs in place to avoid incarceration altogether.)

Hitler had his enablement ruling.
Trump has the equivalent from his Supreme Court.

Hitler had concentration camps for enemies by 1933.
Trump is calling for camps for millions of immigrants
be they citizens or not. Political enemies may get different lodging,
or not.

Hitler had a Kristallnacht and Trump speaks of a purge.

The typical Trump voter did not go to college.
The intelligentsia is therefore the enemy again, billionaires aside.
Most Nazi corporations did very well and exist today be it Krups
or Mercedes and Porsche.

The 900-page 2025 project is the handbook for a modern Nazi State.
It puts Mein Kampf in the shade.

This election is largely up to women. Your average truck driver is voting for Trump. Despite the polls, this choice will be a close one.

I believe it was back in 2000 when Pat Buchanon addressed the Republican convention with phrases like "lock and load" and I don't remember the commentator who said: "I haven't read the Republican charter in the original German."

Buchanon's rendition of 20th Century history considered Churchill to be a warmonger.

It seems Madison Square Garden was packed and there was an overflow crowd watching the racist hyperbole on screens outside. Trump brings out the worst in people and it is tempting to suggest that if there was facial recognition software in effect at the place they have a large pool of possible suspects if there is any rioting or vandalism after the election. Democrats crochet hats and march, Republicans assault the Capitol.

Any other suggestions as to what to do about that crowd are entirely inappropriate and are the reason Democrats aren't making them.

Just like a human response to irrationality is more irrationality, it is worthwhile to have standards and then keep them. It's just not easy.

Unfortunately we are still in a world where there is a limit to truth and sanity, but no limit to lies and insanity.

SRS, in an article I read about the Madison Square Garden rally, Trump spoke for 80 minutes but people started leaving before he stopped talking.

Trump's Madison Square Garden appearance takes aim at Harris, migrants, Puerto Rico — the latest from the US election campaign trail

"Media on the ground noted the crowd at the initially packed arena had begun to thin considerably before the speech finished."

Trump was really late arriving so his long talk went way past what people probably planned as their end of the evening. The place was packed but it's good he saw them leaving. Whatever will spoil his evening.

Two commentaries from Heather Cox Richardson, I hope the links open:

October 26, 2024 about fascism - much of it read from a March 24, 1945, pamphlet for US Army personnel. This is enlightening.

October 27, 2024 discusses the Trump rally at MSG. There is a transcript below the audio player on both.

Sunday in Costco the store was full of carts with small children in tow as parents shopped. Back near the rotisserie chicken counter one Black woman with the large flat cart had two toddlers in the child seats, a bit older child sitting on boxed groceries on the cart, and a taller child walking beside her. As I passed by I smiled and said "you have your hands full!" as she wrangled the family and groceries. She smiled and agreed, then broke her step and turned back and said "great t-shirt, by the way." I thanked her and we moved in opposite directions.

My shirt didn't have any words, it's subtle, with three panels, each a photo of Kamala at different ages. The middle photo is that striking shot of her around law-school age (this is linked via Snopes, saying it's a real photo.) A lot of people are paying attention, but aren't displaying their politics overtly.

People are telling me about Harris signs popping up in places they have never seen them before, and it takes nerve to put up signs, because it can make you a target of Trump supporters. There is a large Harris sign near a freeway ramp that was vandalized with red spray paint - but that says more about the Trump folks than anything else. Texas has been declared a "red" state but it is actually purple - the 9 largest urban counties are all blue, but with 250+ counties in the state there is a lot of rural red voting we have to compensate for. I'm in a county that recently was declared the "most conservative GOP county in the country" - but Biden won here in 2020.

Turning off the social media accounts that pump nonstop memes and photos of people with "I Voted" stickers. Looking for ways to help get voters to the polls (volunteer to drive folks) in the next few days of early voting and then on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Oh, look! A Parody of Queen - "Bohemian Trumpsody" by the Marsh Family. Posted yesterday with the following text:
Oct. 28, 2024 WOKING
Well, with the polls so tight a week out, we decided to revisit US Election politics one last time, and ambitiously to have a stab at building a parody around one of the greatest songs ever written, Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” which was the inimitable mock opera lead single from their album “A Night at the Opera” released in 1975. It was a monstrous production, created across eight generations of 24-track tape and with hundreds of overdubs, complex layered harmonies, subsections, innovations. And at its core, the spectacular vocals of Freddie Mercury – one of the finest singers ever, on top form.

It has been parodied so many times already, including an iconic version by the Muppets (which the kids loved and grew up with), and it’s been twisted to fit subjects from the menopause to coronavirus. But our chosen subject is the willingness of so many decent people to hold their nose and - likely - vote for Donald Trump in the forthcoming US Presidential Election. We know we’ve sung about it already twice, and we don’t live or vote in the USA. But the whole world has a stake in this election – and it’s a free world. At least, for now. We chose not to riff off the many daft claims, stories, or issues (the cat ladies and cats and dogs have been cut up plenty), but just to try to cut to the fundamentals, and think about behaviours, facts, values, and history. Some of the footage is from the US Congress hearings.

to dads who like Trump

You, who are on the road
Learned a code you tried to live by
It came from your radio
It seemed like a familiar hello

Teach your children well
Their father's hell
is based on Fox lies
The ones believed just made us all cry

The Trump Church
of cheat and steal
makes deeper wounds
and may never ever heal.

… Don't you ever ask them why
If they told you, it sounds cruel
So just look at them and sigh
And know they were fooled

… And you, of tender years
Can't know the tears your elders cried
Help them lose their fears
The lies they learned may someday die

… Teach your parents well
Your passed-down hell is partly their fault
They fed you on their dreams
The one they picked is from an old vault.

Well if that piece of uncalled-for snot was aimed at me, then I would remind you that this is a discussion forum and, as a Moderator, you should be encouraging open, civil discussion, not trying to close it down. You should hang your head in shame.

BTW, It wasn’t a ‘video’, it was a Prime-time program on our National Broadcaster, the BBC’s, long-running investigative series, ‘Panorama’. Educate yourself, Google it.

And the only one whining around here is the one trying to silence everyone who doesn’t fall in line with her head-in-the-sand stance, and failing to understand that nothing we say on a tiny, minority-interest internet forum will have any effect whatsoever on the outcome of the election.

Harris delivers her closing argument today on the ellipse in DC.
Around the ellipse is now an unscalable wall and snipers with assault weapons. Some polling places now have new walls and bulletproof glass thanks to you know who. An open society is being transformed into walls and barbed wire like Jerusalem. It is now common to see machine guns in the hands of black uniform soldiers at BWI airport.

Is the peaceful transfer of power gone?
It was gone in 1968 when we lost JFK, MLK, and RFK.

A chink has appeared in the solid wall of silence from the Bush Family: Dubya's daughter Barbara has endorsed Harris.

Now if her mother would also speak up. And perhaps Michelle Obama could coax George into joining her on stage and repudiating Trump.
Barbara Pierce Bush, the daughter of former President George W. Bush and granddaughter of former President George H.W. Bush, spent part of her weekend in Pennsylvania campaigning for Vice President Kamala Harris with just days to go before the 2024 presidential election.

"It was inspiring to join friends and meet voters with the Harris-Walz campaign in Pennsylvania this weekend," Barbara, 42, shares in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE on Tuesday, Oct. 29. "I’m hopeful they'll move our country forward and protect women’s rights."

Barbara’s Republican father served as president from 2001 to 2009. Her mother, former first lady Laura Bush, 77, broke with the party’s stance in 2010 by saying she supports same-sex marriage and abortion. At the time, Laura said abortion should "remain legal, because I think it's important for people, for medical reasons and other reasons."

Here's an editorial from Rebecca Solnit in support of donations to The Guardian. Solnit is the author of, among other books, Men Explain Things To Me. When you hear or read the term "Mansplaining," it's a reference to her main essay.

I believe that the deference and evasiveness of legacy US media organizations comes from many causes, including fear and the habit of pursuing the appearance of even-handedness even at a time when the national political situation is wildly lopsided. Lopsided, that is, because one side is pursuing attacks on democracy and the constitution, and seeks to institute an authoritarian regime while stripping rights away from most of us: from women, immigrants and refugees, queer people and trans people, and the rights of workers to be safe in their workplaces.

The other side has its flaws, its timidities and eagerness for compromise, and the Guardian covers them well, but it is at worst a status-quo party seeking to hold off the coup. That is, the two are not alike, and good journalism does not create the false appearance of symmetry – does not engage in “bothsiderism”, as it’s sometimes called. The situation we’re in is so new we’ve had to reach for new words to describe it. Strikingly, both sanewashing and bothsiderism unpack the failure to accurately represent the realities of the situation. They’re diagnoses of diseases that weaken truth-telling, and thereby democracy.

She is absolutely correct - American media has done a crap job of holding Trump accountable for his behavior.

The Trump and Vance parodies hit all the nails on the head, but I have no idea what Bohemian Rhapsody and such are. I don't follow R&R music, and to me, those 'tunes' are just atonal, chanted blank verse.
I'm glad for anything that pokes serious fun at those GOP clowns, but since I don't need to be convinced, I'll stick to funny memes.
YMMV

You have no idea what Bohemian Rhapsody is?

Definitely not R&R. Probably old enough to be folk now :-D

Bill is a virtual simulation of a pure folk fan. BUT HE IS A KIND SOUL.

I am surprised this Oct. that Donald committed political 'sewercide' at Madison Square Garden by climbing to the top of his ego and leaping off into Puerto Rico. Ironically Harris was at a PR restaurant as Trump lept. Never before has PR been this close to the center of a Presidential election. It mobilized many PR celebrities, PA, and other swing states for Harris.

In real estate, it is location, location, location.
In politics it is timing.

Tonight Harris is using location and timing.
