Maeve-

It was indeed a wonderful gathering. There was plenty of good food and fluids to imbibe and David was a great form and did two sets of songs from traditional sea songs to music hall, to contemporary.

People were still singing (Drive Dull Care Away!) after David's concert when we departed at midnight. They're probably still singing!

Kendall was in a good story-telling mood, and sharp as a tack with his replies.

Sinsull did a superb job of dredging up the original words of "Let the Rest of the World Pass By" in response to David's version of the "Tattooed Lady" which has a passing reference to that song.

There were also those wonderful British songs with tongue-twisting lyrics, such as "Swim, Sam, Swim" with hungry sharks snapping at his heels.

Jeri was persuaded to do her song "Wheel of Time." She also led "Mollymauk."

Peter seemed somewhat subdued from his usual boyant self. I think he only led one song, London Julie, and that was after Barry had left the deck, so to speak; no, he also led "Won't You Help Me to Raise 'Em." Joanne led several songs including the lifeboat service song "Don't Take the Heroes" and Keelahan's forest fire-fighters song "Cold Missouri Waters."

Jaquie and Kendall did Utah Phillip's coalmining song "Morphine" and several others.

Tom Hall was in fine form but other than "McPhearson's Lament" I'm blanking on song titles. Linn was induced to lead "Aunt Clara" among others.

I'm also blanking on the songs that Barry and Justine led, and Rose and her son Colin. Maybe someone will wake up and fill in the blanks.

I think I led West Indies Blues (Ella Madison), Midwatches (Burt Franklin Jenness), Hell's Pavement (John Masefield), and Outward Bound (Bill Adams). "Hell's Pavement" even had a reference to a "Davy Jones."

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

David also led off his 2nd set with Henry Lawson's "The Outside Track" and was probably surprised with how well the audience knew the chorus.

He certainly had a fine audience for joining in on chorus or refrain for most of his songs. I think he was very pleased.

Sigh, missed another one. As nice as it is to live in the tropics I sure do miss these gatherings of the finest people in the world.

Charley, you did a great job of leading us through what happened during the evening. You usually do in your reports. I can hear, in my mind's ear, the voices raised in song. I can see, in my mind's eye, the people gathered in Mary's house happily eating then singing and drinking and carrying on. Tom's voice is clear, and Linn's. There's Kendall and Jacqui. Jeri's voice rises out of the pack with Mollymauk. The plinking banjo backs up your voice followed by Mary and her heart-strings songs. And David's voice rolls along with his wonderful mix of songs and stories.

Come home, Brett. We can use another singer. And Jacqui and I still have to introduce Wakana to the wonders of the Christmas Tree Shop.

Rose and son Colin led a few including Sam Hall. The harmonies the two provide are beautiful. Colin is the perfect guest - came with a twelve pack of Pepsi.

Re: beverages. Save huge amounts of money by offering ONLY Blue Raspberry Lemonade. Those who got past the foul smell, gagged on the taste. Nasty stuff.

The Finns provided a few songs - anyone remember the title of the song Justine sang? I am drawing a blank.

Kendall was really in rare form. Fun to watch him out quip Peter so masterfully. The line "Does your wife tell everything she knows?" was the definite high point.

Thank you for that clear picture of a wonderful night! One of these nights I'll manage to join you... if I can overcome my inordinate fear of Sinsull's pranks! ;)

Maeve-

There's nothing to fear but fear itself, but that may be sufficient when it comes to the "pranks" that happen chez SINSULL.

maeve,
The majority keep coming back. Part of the trick is to develop keen survival instincts. Sad but true, I forgot Linn and Tom's 25th Anniversary horror, uh, gift.

Justine's song????

Sins, do you still have the wooden tower of ugliness? What could be worse than having one of those... uh, maybe having TWO of them! Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Sinsull- Go back? Return to the scene of unbridled music and good humor? Visit again the home of the welcoming and generous Sinsull: She Whose Gifts Are to Be Avoided?

I can't even remember what I sang.

Let's see, I screwed up "Little Piece of Wang", got requested "Aunt right after I sang something else, but I can't remember what it was. Was going to sing the "south of the border ballad" "Tequila Sheila" but got distracted and never sang it.

Deborah sang something that I wanted the words for -- hope she remembers what it was.

Sigh. Getting old is a bitch.

Wow! I never knew this sort of discussion existed on the internet. Usually when I miss David's concerts I have to nag and pry to hear what he sang, who was there, how it went etc. Of course the whole night sounds like so much fun that now I'm doubly regretful that I wasn't there. Thanks to all the people who filled in so many details. Now maybe I'll read it all in French. Will Jacqui post her recipe? It sounds great.

Another superb house concert. David was just great. It was really good to spend some time with him and catch up on some goings on. Lots of good song and merriment. Thanks for Carrying Nelson Home. Jacqui can you post a link to the lyrics on this thread? I'm still digesting the wire brush and over the counter discussions.
The food put out during supper was just spectacular. Some of Jacqui's chicken recipe with a few anchovies thrown in the mix was a tasty treat. Kendall, it was nice to see you hit the guitar during the evening....enjoyed it. Charlie and Judy...thanks for the book...now we have the real thing and an online copy.
I still thought that the blue shawl would have looked much better on me. However, it left on the owner's back. Nice car Kendall....all you need is Jacqui by your side, a Thompson sticking out of the side window and a few cases of hard booze in the stern cruising along the streets of Portland....a true American dream.
Mary....just spectacular....another fine evening with some very special friends in Portland. Thanks for your hospitality and sharing.
And thanks to all who attended....we enjoyed the evening.
David....thanks. When are you going to do another CD????
The best to all.
Sunday afternoon.....was back on Adventure's deck...readying for rain. Not subdued...just a bit worn from seven days a week work schedule.....but feeling great. What a great life.
Doryman and his mate.

Oy, that should have been " got requested 'Aunt Clara' "... couldn't type for beans last night, either.

Jacqui's wonderful recipe originated with Pete the Spy who served it earlier this year. Jacqui had the sense to request the recipe and now we get to savor it again! (And often, I hope!)

And, thanks to TruBrit's Tom, I got to indulge in pickled beets (and anchovies, hardcooked eggs, delightful little potatoes, very good -- and pitless! -- olives, etcet etcet) -- I even had some leftover pickled beets with my breakfast eggs and that great rye toast the next morning.

I've been trying to avoid carbohydrates, but I certainly indulged in some fine breads this weekend.

Gotta go to work.
Linn

Oh, yes, I see from above that I was.

And evidently I had a great time!

Thanks to all!

How could I forget the "wire brush"?

"My Old Man Said To Follow The Van" was on the play list too.

Here is Bethnel Green:
The Ballad of Bethnal Green by Paddy Roberts

I'll sing you a tale of a jealous male and a maid of sweet sixteen
She was blonde and dumb and she lived with her Mum on the fringe of Bethnal Green
She worked all week for a rich old Greek for her Dad was on the dole.
And her one delight was a Friday night when she had a little rock and roll.

To My rit-fal-lal, to my titty-fal-lal, to my titty-bitty fal dal lay.
To My rit-fal-lal, to my titty-fal-lal, to my titty-bitty fal dal lay.

Then one fine day in the month of May she found her big romance
He was dark and sleek with a scar on his cheek and a pair of drainpipe pants
And she thought with you I could be so true through all the years to come
For she loved the gay abandoned way he chewed his chewing-gum (Chorus)

It started well because he fell for all her girlish charms
But he had some doubt when he caught her out in some-one elses arms
He said "Look here, you know my dear, this is going a bit to far"
Then he went quite white and he sloshed her right In the middle of her cha cha cha (Chorus)

He went before a man of the law who said "this will not do.
I've had enough of the sort of stuff as I get from the likes of you"
And was she peeved when he received a longish term in clink.
In a fit of pique she married the Greek and now she's dressed in mink (Chorus)

Louise,
Please convince David to come back next year and this time join him. There is always a bed and a meal.

Or better still come up for The Annual Lobster Boil once we figure out when it will be.
Mary

Kendall and Jacqui did "The Goodnight Loving Trail". There were some other utah Phillips songs sung. Miners' Lullaby and...
Peter sang "I'm A Man You Don't Meet Every Day"
There was Sunday AM music too but I was suffering from a lack of coffee.
Thank you Tom for taking over the bacon and Joann for toast duty after the fuse blew. Never a dull moment.

I found the words for Carrying Nelson Home here.

David mentioned that there were some typos and I'd be glad to hear from someone if that is correct.

Actually, I think it was Barry who sang - A man you don't meet every day.

Joanne - I have do doubt the shawl would look better on you with your gorgeous long blond hair (curse you!!!) but it is MINE, MINE --- all mine!!!!!

I'll pass everyone's praises on the food along to Tom -- I used to think I was the only person in America who liked cooked cold pickled beets (or what we English simply call -- Beetroot) but obviously I am way wrong on that.......

Deb and Mary-

You're both right! Barry sang a sailor's version of "I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day" which Peter followed with a verse or two of the traditional drinking song.

Charley Noble
