Subject: BS: Are Both Right? Is Neither? From: Ebbie Date: 24 Oct 24 - 10:43 PM I just listened to Elon Musk speaking in Pennsylvania explaining to the audience that this election may be the last free election, that if Trump doesn’t win, our Constitution will be rendered null and void, that the ‘other’ side is trying to destroy America and all it stands for. This is not the first time I have heard MAGA present itself that way. It’s the equivalent of “God is on our side.” On BOTH sides. Is 'God' sitting in the dining room watching the battle on his television, chortling all the while? WTHF |

Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: Ebbie Date: 25 Oct 24 - 04:46 AM There is a tune that we do, called The End of the World, from the long-ago dobro-playing Oswald Kirby. Players on the various instruments in our group take their turn at being featured, but because I can no longer play guitar because of my frozen shoulder I wrote a couple of verses to the tune, which we all sing when it’s my turn. They go: “When the darkness gathers ‘round, silently, without sound Voices bleak seem to speak through the gloom Everything will disappear, erasing all that I hold dear Then I believe that I can see the end of the world. “But with the coming of the dawn when all trace of dark has gone And the Earth knows its worth, again will bloom And bright sun’s sweet caress brings me hope and happiness Then I can see there’ll never be an end of the world.” And that is the hope I cling to. |
Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 25 Oct 24 - 12:17 PM Right after Trump was elected a guy in Seattle started a Twitter account called "What the Fuck Just Happened Today?" and he would sum up the day's news in one long run-on sentence, followed by links to the news organizations where each phrase was sourced. I subscribed, and he kept it going during the Biden administration, more or less still focused on the bad behavior of The Former Guy. This came out on Tuesday (numbered by the day of the current administration): Welcome to Day 1372. Here's the site if anyone is interested in following along. You don't have to pay to read it. |
Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: Helen Date: 25 Oct 24 - 12:56 PM Thanks for your verse of hope, Ebbie. I think it is more useful to focus on hope than on doom and gloom, and in the U.S. it is especially important in motivating people to vote. If they focus on despair they think there is no point in voting because the result is perceived to be inevitable. If they think their vote can make a difference, they will vote. |
Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: Helen Date: 25 Oct 24 - 03:27 PM The image of God sitting in a room of a house reminds me of my favourite cartoon ever. I saw it in a book about sci-fi many decades ago and I have a copy of it filed away somewhere safe, i.e. I can't remember where it is, so I can't give the name of the cartoonist. Briefly, a man is in a space ship, travelling far, far away in the universe, sees lots of signs saying "Go back, end of the universe" then God (portrayed as a bearded old man) is sitting in his lounge room when a teeny-tiny spaceship jumps out of his aquarium-style container and lands on the floor. He picks it up, puts it on the mantle piece and says, "I'll just put that with all the others" and there are a few more spaceships lined up on the shelf. Sorry for the discussion detour. |

Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 27 Oct 24 - 11:08 AM Trump is hosting a rally at Madison Square Garden. I sure hope there is an independent head-counter there to let us know how many New Yorkers give a rats ass about Trump to attend a rally. Meanwhile, Harris is walking into the lion's den - small events in Philadelphia, primarily focussing on Black men, some of whom have dismissed her because of old lies told by Trump (about her prosecuting Black men in California and locking them up; in fact, she had programs in place to avoid incarceration altogether.) |

Trump has the equivalent from his Supreme Court. Hitler had concentration camps for enemies by 1933. Trump is calling for camps for millions of immigrants be they citizens or not. Political enemies may get different lodging, or not. Hitler had a Kristallnacht and Trump speaks of a purge. The typical Trump voter did not go to college. The intelligentsia is therefore the enemy again, billionaires aside. Most Nazi corporations did very well and exist today be it Krups or Mercedes and Porsche. The 900-page 2025 project is the handbook for a modern Nazi State. It puts Mein Kampf in the shade. This election is largely up to women. Your average truck driver is voting for Trump. Despite the polls, this choice will be a close one. |
Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: robomatic Date: 27 Oct 24 - 03:25 PM I believe it was back in 2000 when Pat Buchanon addressed the Republican convention with phrases like "lock and load" and I don't remember the commentator who said: "I haven't read the Republican charter in the original German." Buchanon's rendition of 20th Century history considered Churchill to be a warmonger. |
Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: Donuel Date: 28 Oct 24 - 08:15 AM I recall Pat saying lock and load. Ride to the sound of gunfire boys! Hitler lied about the inferiority of Jews and Slavs. Turns out that Einstien and Tesla have changed the world more than your average Aryan. Trump calls central and south Americans inferior along with your usual KKK examples of non humans. |
Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 28 Oct 24 - 08:49 AM SRS, if 70% of Americans are in favour of what would effectively be concentration camps for arriving and even settled migrants, I despair for your country, to the effect that folkies seem to be the only decent people. |
Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: Bill D Date: 28 Oct 24 - 10:49 AM SPB... who said anything like 70%? Any is too many, but your generalization is silly. Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: MaJoC the Filk Date: 28 Oct 24 - 11:47 AM It does strike me as deeply odd that someone will loudly protest at immigration one minute, and equally loudly claim Scottish ancestry the next. |
Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: Backwoodsman Date: 28 Oct 24 - 12:21 PM It strikes me as deeply odd that the vast majority of those Americans protesting immigration are themselves immigrants or descendants of immigrants. Liberty must be weeping on her little island. |
Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 28 Oct 24 - 12:30 PM It seems Madison Square Garden was packed and there was an overflow crowd watching the racist hyperbole on screens outside. Trump brings out the worst in people and it is tempting to suggest that if there was facial recognition software in effect at the place they have a large pool of possible suspects if there is any rioting or vandalism after the election. Democrats crochet hats and march, Republicans assault the Capitol. Any other suggestions as to what to do about that crowd are entirely inappropriate and are the reason Democrats aren't making them. |
Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: robomatic Date: 28 Oct 24 - 01:47 PM Just like a human response to irrationality is more irrationality, it is worthwhile to have standards and then keep them. It's just not easy. Unfortunately we are still in a world where there is a limit to truth and sanity, but no limit to lies and insanity. |
Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: Helen Date: 28 Oct 24 - 02:28 PM SRS, in an article I read about the Madison Square Garden rally, Trump spoke for 80 minutes but people started leaving before he stopped talking. Trump's Madison Square Garden appearance takes aim at Harris, migrants, Puerto Rico — the latest from the US election campaign trail "Media on the ground noted the crowd at the initially packed arena had begun to thin considerably before the speech finished." |

Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: Bill D Date: 28 Oct 24 - 03:19 PM It is not contradictory to be descended from immigrants, Scottish and otherwise, and still worry about illegal immigration. Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 28 Oct 24 - 04:25 PM Trump was really late arriving so his long talk went way past what people probably planned as their end of the evening. The place was packed but it's good he saw them leaving. Whatever will spoil his evening. Two commentaries from Heather Cox Richardson, I hope the links open: October 26, 2024 about fascism - much of it read from a March 24, 1945, pamphlet for US Army personnel. This is enlightening. October 27, 2024 discusses the Trump rally at MSG. There is a transcript below the audio player on both. |
Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 28 Oct 24 - 08:04 PM Sunday in Costco the store was full of carts with small children in tow as parents shopped. Back near the rotisserie chicken counter one Black woman with the large flat cart had two toddlers in the child seats, a bit older child sitting on boxed groceries on the cart, and a taller child walking beside her. As I passed by I smiled and said "you have your hands full!" as she wrangled the family and groceries. She smiled and agreed, then broke her step and turned back and said "great t-shirt, by the way." I thanked her and we moved in opposite directions. My shirt didn't have any words, it's subtle, with three panels, each a photo of Kamala at different ages. The middle photo is that striking shot of her around law-school age (this is linked via Snopes, saying it's a real photo.) A lot of people are paying attention, but aren't displaying their politics overtly. People are telling me about Harris signs popping up in places they have never seen them before, and it takes nerve to put up signs, because it can make you a target of Trump supporters. There is a large Harris sign near a freeway ramp that was vandalized with red spray paint - but that says more about the Trump folks than anything else. Texas has been declared a "red" state but it is actually purple - the 9 largest urban counties are all blue, but with 250+ counties in the state there is a lot of rural red voting we have to compensate for. I'm in a county that recently was declared the "most conservative GOP county in the country" - but Biden won here in 2020. Turning off the social media accounts that pump nonstop memes and photos of people with "I Voted" stickers. Looking for ways to help get voters to the polls (volunteer to drive folks) in the next few days of early voting and then on Tuesday, Nov. 5. |

You should hang your head in shame. BTW, It wasn’t a ‘video’, it was a Prime-time program on our National Broadcaster, the BBC’s, long-running investigative series, ‘Panorama’. An open society is being transformed into walls and barbed wire like Jerusalem. It is now common to see machine guns in the hands of black uniform soldiers at BWI airport. I am surprised this Oct. that Donald committed political 'sewercide' at Madison Square Garden by climbing to the top of his ego and leaping off into Puerto Rico. Ironically Harris was at a PR restaurant as Trump lept. Never before has PR been this close to the center of a Presidential election. It mobilized many PR celebrities, PA, and other swing states for Harris. In real estate, it is location, location, location. In politics it is timing. Tonight Harris is using location and timing. |
Subject: RE: BS: American Presidential race 2024 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 29 Oct 24 - 11:52 PM There's a website that offers up local and regional information (in an unmoderated jumbled mess of posts) called Nextdoor. I rarely look at it and have it set so it never sends me notifications or emails. I took a dive this evening and find a lot of questions about who the people are knocking on doors to ask if they've made a plan to vote - they're called canvassers, and both parties use them to get out the vote - and after reading tonight I'm all the more convinced that my days of canvassing are over. Too many of those folks hide behind their Ring doorbells and have a loaded gun in the house. This is in Texas, y'all. I'm going to be driving people to the polls (county early voting locations for now, or the regular village location on election day) if asked - I've let several people know I'm available. |
