This is a VERY self serving request. My wife and I will be in New York City from December 1st through the 5th and I was wondering if anyone knew of some good Celtic music we could catch on those dates. Or for that matter any style of music that would appeal to the average Mudcatter. While she's at her seminar I plan to head over to Mandolin Bros to check out all of the mandolas, mandocellos ect that they might have - but is there anywhere else in the city that I should check out for celtic style stringed instruments?? Thanks in advance - if you don't want to post you can respond to [e-mail] before the 1st. I'll try not to be so self serving in the future. I hope this request doesn't upset anyone and I hope everyone is enjoying the long Thanksgiving weekend.

No need for the B.S. designation, Wesley. This is clearly a music-related thread: not even the most committed of our thread purity advocates would consider this inappropriate. Also, no need to apologize for asking for help (not that I can give you any--I live across the bay from San Francisco.

i have two suggestions for you
(1)pick up a copy of the Village Voice
it is a weekly newspaper that comes out every wed. it has a very strong entertainment section
(2)call the folk-fone 212 563-4099
it is a recorded listing of folk/celtic etc. in NY and vacinity

Hi Wesley!

Assuming you will be in Manhattan, you can take a look at Matt Umanov's (273 Bleeker Street, West of 6th Avenue) in Manhattan also. I'm sure you know both these stores are on the expensive side. What instrument are you actually looking to buy or are you just looking?

Brian Conway has a session at O'Neill's (3rd Avenue at 45th Street) on Saturday, 4DEC. I'm not booked to sing that night but my wife has some friends coming from out-of-town for the weekend and we might stop by.

Dan - Thanks for your reply. It's funny - my wife's last name is Milner also. I just ordered your CD on Irish ballads and Sea shantys { ? } the other day from Elderly because of the name similarity and here we are "chatting" with each other. I saw the info about the session at O'Neills on another thread and we hope to check it out. Hopefully we'll have a chance to chat. Look for a chubby middle aged white guy with glasses and a pony tail. Gee - how many of those could there be anyway?

As far as musical instruments go it's just a research trip for me. I already got a new Weber mandolin and a Martin OM-28V this year and any other purchases would be risky for my health. But someday I hope to have a mandola and an octive mandolin, cittern, or mandocello. Or something else in the mandolin on steroids family. But here in Texas you just don't find any of those types of stringed instruments. I'll check out Matts. Thanks

Also pick up a copy of the Irish Echo. They will have some local listings.

My personal recommendation would be to check out An Beal Bocht in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. It's at 138th and Greystone and near the #1 train. It's a tiny coffee-house style eatery with an intimate atmosphere. They have music Fri and Sat. The "stage" is a small area in front of a fireplace.

Since I became a da 20 months ago, I haven't been in the scene much. A lot of sessions in Manhattan have drifted away. There's still a hopping scene on McClean Ave in Yonkers.

Matt Umanov's is pricey. Check out E48th Street between 6th and 7th Ave. There are a string of music shops, mostly rock, but with a few hidden gems.

I forgot to tell you earlier that James Keane & Eamonn O'Leary are at The Blarney Star (43 Murray @ Church) on Friday, 3DEC. There is a session at Kate Kearney's (ca. 50th Street, West of 2nd Avenue) on Thursday nights. Ask the tall banjo player if I'm in the room.
