Subject: Songs about 'crossing over' From: Genie Date: 18 Jun 06 - 11:30 PM I've tried doing some topical searches for songs to celebrate a loved one's life when they pass on. I am looking for songs that celebrate the continuity of life, including, I guess, songs about heaven or reincarnation, but in particular, songs that you might use for a service celebrating the life of a departed loved one. Some that come to mind are: Crossing The Bar - Tennyson Crossing The Water - Staines River - Staines Sing With The Angels - Rick Fielding Angel Band - Traditional Gospel (?) Wayfaring Stranger This World Is Not My Home Give Yourself To Love and a new song I recently discovered called "Flyin' Shoes" by California singer-songwriter Terry Pinnegar. (I will post those lyrics if I get permission from Mr. Pinnegar). I'm starting this thread because folk music has a gazillion songs about war, murder, tragic death, ghosts, and all sorts of depressing songs on the subject of death. There are also funny or sem-comical songs about wakes and hell and heaven. Those are not what I'm looking for here, and I thought it might be faster to ask for your suggestions than to sift through the entire catalog. What are some songs you've found comforting in times of trouble, suffering, or the passing of someone close to you? |
Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: GrassStains Date: 18 Jun 06 - 11:53 PM "O Sing to Me of Heaven" is a beauty. (I first heard it on the CD Come All you Tenderhearted by Ginny Hawker and Kay Justice). There's also "You've Got to Cross that Lonesome Valley" (the Richard Dyer Bennett version is wonderful). Robin and Linda Williams recorded "Let us Cross Over the River," a lovely song, though I don't know for sure that they wrote it (can't find my CD at the moment). Carol |

Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: Anne Lister Date: 19 Jun 06 - 04:59 AM My song "Spreading Rings" was written for my grandmother and has been used in many funerals since then. I've been told by a company who runs humanist and secular funerals that it's useful to have a song which doesn't have a religious theme, for those who don't have a religious outlook (or didn't). Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: Genie Date: 19 Jun 06 - 05:26 PM Thanks, folks. Thanks for those links, Jed. Now that I think of it, you have a song to the tune of Wild Mountain Thyme on one of your CDs that, as I recall, would fit. Tabster, is your song "Spreading Wings" somewhere where I can hear it? --- Changing the subject slightly, I'd swear that I posted a reply to greg stephens last night, but my post is not to be found in this thread! Wha hoppen?? I mentioned other old spirituals and trad favorites or hymns such as I'll Fly Away and: In The Sweet By And By Shall We Gather At The River? Abide With Me Golden Slippers When They Ring Those Golden Bells For You And Me I am especially interested in newer songs and/or lesser-known (than I'll Fly Away and In The Sweet By And By) trad songs. We could list Amazing Grace too, because it's sung at so many memorial services, but aside from the "10,000 years" verse, which Newton didn't write, it seems more a general hymn, and I really wish people wouldn't use it for funerals so much that the public thinks of it as a dirge. (OK, off soapbox.) :-) I guess I should add Kate Wolf's "Across The Great Divide," too. I think she wrote it when a close friend was facing death. |

Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: MoorleyMan Date: 21 Jun 06 - 04:27 AM At the risk of repeating a music biz cliche, they do say songs on that subject are popular because they have a lot of "crossover appeal"! But seriously.. Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher have just started doing a song from the singing of Tommy Fleming (it's actually titled Crossing Over I believe), and it's a cracker - I'll see if I can find out more. |
Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: GUEST,Uncle Jaque Date: 21 Jun 06 - 06:11 AM That last one kinda posted itself before i was done with it... (?) Try this, from an 1849 endbinder; "Sister Thous Wast Mild and Lovely" Sister Thou Wast.... |
Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: GUEST,Uncle Jaque Date: 21 Jun 06 - 06:14 AM OK, let's try this again, shall we?... From one of my 19th Century Hymnals; "Going" "Going" Bet you havn't heard this one in a while, have ye? |

Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: GUEST,UJ (Again...) Date: 21 Jun 06 - 07:50 AM Now that you've got me rummaging through the collection... Here's something you don't hear much any more - a Protestant CHANT!; "Calm On The Bosom of thy God"; 19th Century Funery Chant And someone mentioned "Weep Not for Me"; This version has a couple of sets of alternative verses, which was not at all uncommon at the time - lyrics and scores were mixed and matched on the fly according to metrical compatability. The score is pretty nondescript IMHO, as a lot of music from this period was - but I do it to the tune of "All Through the Night", which works pretty well. The chords I worked out by ear and may not be "proper", but they sound OK to me. "Weep Not For Me" This is a good excersize in rapid chording, I have found! |
Subject: RE: 'crossing over' to Beulah Land... From: GUEST,UJ (1 More Time...) Date: 21 Jun 06 - 08:10 AM It's been mentioned on this thread and we've discussed it multi-times here over the years, but an old tradition in the mid to later 19th Century was to have the Family gather around the bed of the departing Loved one, and "Sing them Home". ...As I did about 3 1/2 years ago as my Mother lay dying. And the song I sang her Home to was this old standby; "The Land of Beulah" (Angel Band) (The chord notations are mine, probably don't match the score key, and your milage may vary. I use sort of a waltz time finger-pick style with it.) |
Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: Mrs_Annie Date: 21 Jun 06 - 09:13 AM A lovely one is 'The Light on the Shore' by Karine Polwart - makes me cry every time. |
Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: Goldengob Date: 21 Jun 06 - 09:45 AM The song "Crossing Over" mentioned by MorleyMan was written by Eric Lowen and Dan Navarro and I found the words struck such a chord after losing someone with just the same outlook as the subject in the song. It was from the singing of Tommy Fleming but his version is much more uptempo. It is combined on the latest WhaleyFletcher album with a terrific song by Beth Nielsen Chapman "I Find Your Love" which gives a very comforting view of how nature reminds us everywhere of those who have "crossed over" Dave |
Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: JedMarum Date: 21 Jun 06 - 12:23 PM Kim C has done a beautiful job with her LAST LETTER HOME "And remember our sweetest affections are bound by cords stronger than death." I have sung this song for a number of shows, over the years. I have written another song that fits the "crossing over" subject. It is a Civil War song I wrote from Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's dying words, and is the title song for a new album I'll release later this year. Here're the lyrics: CHO: Let us cross over the river And sit in the shade of the tress Let us cross over the river For the day is done Let us take our ease Gone are the racket and rattle Gentle the glow of the sun Distant the field of the battle Contented my work here is done CHO My soldiers are tired and weary They're ragged but their spirits are strong The years have been bitter and dreary These hardships they've battled so long CHO Many's the home that's been grieved in For their loved ones I led into war Fought and died for what they believed in So many I've brought to this shore CHO repeat first verse/CHO except change the last line of the verse to: Contented His work here is done |

Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: Mark Clark Date: 21 Jun 06 - 11:50 PM One really great song for your purpose is Terry Smith's Far Side of Jordan. The chorus is: And I'll be waiting on the far side bank of Jordan June Carter Cash sang a bit of this song in the film, The Apostle. It's highly singable and has a great melody. The song was recorded by the Cox Family and Alison Krauss on their l995 Grammy-winning project, I Know Who Holds Tomorrow. Johnny and June Carter Cash cut the first version of this song in the seventies, and June also recorded it with Mother Maybelle and her sisters as part of a Carter Family album. In fact, it is the Carter Family version that is used on The Apostle soundtrack CD. If you don't know this song, check it out. You'll love it. - Mark |

Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: Pauline L Date: 22 Jun 06 - 01:31 AM I love Lay Down Your Weary Tune, one of the less well known songs by Bob Dylan. Lay Down Your Weary Tune Lay down your weary tune, lay down, Lay down the song you strum, And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings No voice can hope to hum. Struck by the sounds before the sun, I knew the night had gone. The morning breeze like a bugle blew Against the drums of dawn. Lay down your weary tune, lay down, Lay down the song you strum, And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings No voice can hope to hum. The ocean wild like an organ played, The seaweed's wove its strands. The crashin' waves like cymbals clashed Against the rocks and sands. Lay down your weary tune, lay down, Lay down the song you strum, And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings No voice can hope to hum. I stood unwound beneath the skies And clouds unbound by laws. The cryin' rain like a trumpet sang And asked for no applause. Lay down your weary tune, lay down, Lay down the song you strum, And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings No voice can hope to hum. The last of leaves fell from the trees And clung to a new love's breast. The branches bare like a banjo played To the winds that listened best. I gazed down in the river's mirror And watched its winding strum. The water smooth ran like a hymn And like a harp did hum. Lay down your weary tune, lay down, Lay down the song you strum, And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings No voice can hope to hum. |
Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: Ebbie Date: 22 Jun 06 - 02:22 AM Far Side Banks of Jordan is on June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash's CD, Press On. As Mark Clark said, it is a moving song. On the CD they talk about how they got the song- written by a schoolteacher in New York - and they alternate verses. In the second verse, June sings: "And if it proves to be His will that I am first to go And somehow I've a feeling it will be When it's your turn to go likewise, don't feel lost For I will be the first one that you see." |

Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: bfdk Date: 22 Jun 06 - 06:14 AM I like the idea of "still being around" that this song conveys: Soaring Free (Eric Bogle / M. Sansom) Nae need tae cry for me You only have tae walk The places that I loved And there is where I'll be Nae need tae cry for me Round autumn's chestnut trees In Hay Lodge park you'll find me Dancin' wi' the leaves Joyous in blustery breeze Round autumn's chestnut trees Chorus: My spirit will soar free And swoop wi' the swallows O'er the glitterin' Tweed As it surges tae the sea My spirit will soar free Free - free - free Wi' winter's mists I'll merge And swirling nestle In the shelterin' hills Where trees and sky converge Wi' winter's mists I'll merge And I will be nearby When pipers swell your heart again Wi' ancient pride And Beltane banners fly Yes I will be nearby Chorus So greet nae mair for me This land was in my blood And now is in my soul And there I'll ever be So greet nae mair for me Chorus From the CD "The Colour of Dreams", CDTRAX 237 Best wishes, Bente |
Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: GUEST,Pelrad Date: 22 Jun 06 - 08:05 AM It isn't folk, and it's a little too strong for a memorial, but my favorite is "Lightning Crashes" by Live. LIVE LYRICS "Lightning Crashes" lightning crashes, a new mother cries her placenta falls to the floor the angel opens her eyes the confusion sets in before the doctor can even close the door lightning crashes, an old mother dies her intentions fall to the floor the angel closes her eyes the confusion that was hers belongs now, to the baby down the hall oh now feel it comin' back again like a rollin' thunder chasing the wind forces pullin' from the center of the earth again I can feel it. lightning crashes, a new mother cries this moment she's been waiting for the angel opens her eyes pale blue colored iris, presents the circle and puts the glory out to hide, hide |
Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: JedMarum Date: 22 Jun 06 - 08:43 AM Oh - I have another. An Irish immigrant who was very important to the development of Texas, lived a long and productive life there - married into a Mexican family that he loved - and here are his dying sentiments: The last rays of daylight still dancing on water the summer heat rises from Copano Bay I know as the sun slips below the horizon I won't see it brighten another day Come and sit by by side for these moments My sweet Thomasa you've been good to me I have donemuch in mylife, that's certain but my saving grace has been your love for me CHO: Con este Beso (with this kiss) Te digo adios (that says good bye) Nunca llores por me mi amore (never cry for me my love) Nunnca te lamentes por me mi amore (never mourn for me my love) Por que mi alma (for my soul) Vuela con Dios (flies with God) En la luz (on the light) de tu amor (of your love) sobre las alas (on the wings) de tu amor (of your love) Born to the glens of the Barrow and the Liffey Near Ballygarret on the Irish Sea Blessed by the love of your South Texas family My sweet Thomasa you've been good to me CHO |

Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: Artful Codger Date: 22 Jun 06 - 09:08 PM In that case, there's "I'll Fly Away". |
Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: Genie Date: 22 Jun 06 - 09:48 PM Yes, Artful, "I'll Fly Away" is the same kind of theme, but it doesn't express the idea that "I'll still be with you" the way Eric's song does. Which reminds me, another song that does touch on this is "Bright Morning Stars Together." And a song that I've sung for friends' memorials which isn't specifically about departing this world, but which I think really fits, is the WWII song "I'll Be Seeing You." "I'll Be Seeing You in all the old familiar places That this heart of mine embraces all day through. In that small cafe, the park across the way, The children's carousel, the chestnut tree, the wishing well. "I'll Be Seeing You in ev'ry lovely summer's day, In ev'rything that's light and gay -- I'll always think of you that way. I'll find you in the morning sun, and when the night is new I'll be looking at the moon, but I'll be seeing you. |

Subject: Songs re 'crossing over' /Lay Down Your Weary Tune From: Genie Date: 06 Jul 06 - 02:18 AM Thanks, rich-joy. Watching Martin Scorsese's documentary about Dylan, "No Direction Home" tonight, I was very much drawn to the closing song, "Lay Down Your Weary Tune." Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: Charley Noble Date: 07 Jul 06 - 01:03 PM Here's another which I hope no one uses on my behalf for a few more years (copy and paste into WORD/TIMES/12 to line up chords): Words and music by Charlie Ipcar and Judy Barrows © 2003 Key: F (5/C ) Pastures of Memories C--------F-C-----F-C Pastures of mem-o-ries, ----G---C--------F-----C—G--C Sift-ing through life's my-ste-ries, G-------------C---G Golden cows and butterflies, ----F----------------C All on a summer's day. Once I was so young and free, Climbing an old apple tree; Thinking it so very high That I could touch the sky. C—F-------------G-F--------C But now that sky is growing dim, -----F-----------------G-C----------G The shadows stretch to clo-se me in; C------------F-C---F-C So here's to darkness and despair, -G-----C-F-C---G----C I know of a field somewhere, G----------------C/G And on my back there I'll lie -----F-------------------G---C And watch the clouds drift by. Midnight on a rock-y shore, We sang a-bove the wild waves roar, Trees so black a-gainst the sky, We could hear the night birds cry. Love was young and songs were old, A time for shy ones to be bold, To gaze into another eyes And only see the dawn. Though now that sun is sinking low, The love that's left still reflects its glow, It's better to have loved and lost, Then never to have risked the cost, But better yet to try anew, And fall in love again. Another time in a land so fair, With sacred groves in mountain air, I'd ride my horse down a village green, Round houses lined each side. Where the Thunder God still reigned supreme, And people danced upon the green; They offered gifts to the temple priest, And drank their honey wine. But now, where have the Old Gods gone? Do the sacred groves still ring with chants and song? Perhaps, I'll journey once again, Listen in the evening wind, And pour a horn of honey wine At the foot of some old tree. Waves of time drift slowly by, Now I'm sailing with the tide, Through misty islands in the morn, I keep a sharp lookout. But that pirate ship of yesterday, Now she lies beneath the waves, Her timbers buried in the mud, Where can her captain be? Now, our time is drawing near, The farthest sho-re is becoming clear; So trim the sail, make fast the sheet, We've old friends we'd like to meet; They'll welcome us upon the shore, And join us in this song. Pastures of memories, Sifting through life's mysteries, Golden cows and butterflies, All on a summer's day Here's a link to my personal website and a MP3 sample: Click here and search for lyrics! The chorus of the song and the tune came early one morning in a dream, and the rest just filled itself in. I've recorded it on my first CD entitled UNCOMMON SAILOR SONGS. I don't get to sing it much but I think I'll dust it off for our traitional music gathering in the fall. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: Barbara Date: 09 Jul 06 - 01:10 AM Here's the one I wrote for Merritt, in response to his changing the last verse of "Who Will Sing For Me?". He wrote: "When you're singing for your friends, Who's lives on earth are through, They'll be gathered up above, Where they're singing songs for you." And I wrote this one for him after he died: THE UNCLAIMED PINT (Barbara Millikan, copyright 2004) Eight pints around the table, Seven singers raise a glass, As we toast the days that come no more; But the single chair is vacant And the sorrow's in our eyes; Tonight we sing for one who's gone before. CHORUS: Raise your voices, raise your glasses, Sing your sorrows and your joys, We will sing until they throw us out the door; For the unclaimed pint is standing At his empty place, No, he won't be singing with us anymore. Many long nights we have lingered 'Round our table at the pub, And time and trials have bound us to each other; Wings of songs we sang together Carry him across, Where their echoes ring forevermore. (CHORUS) Yet sometimes in the silence From one verse to the next, We can almost hear soft laughter there once more And the echo of his voice is ringing In the final chord -- Tonight he's singing on the other shore. LAST CHORUS: Raise your voices, raise your glasses Sing your sorrows and your joys We will sing until they throw us out the door For the unclaimed pint is standing At his empty place No, he won't be singing with us anymore Now he's singing on the other shore. |

Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: GUEST Date: 10 Jul 06 - 03:14 AM Jackson Brown's "For a Dancer," John Renbourn's "Traveler's Prayer." At my wife's grandmother's funeral, they played "Go Rest High On That Mountain," by Vince Gill. On his deathbed in 1938, my great grandfather, George W. Turner sang "How Firm the Foundation," and stated "I Feel Like Traveling On" (which is the title of a gospel song). He was 83. |

Subject: Songs about 'crossing over': When I've Passed On From: Genie Date: 20 Apr 09 - 03:18 PM I just stumbled across this rarely heard song from Miriam Makeba. She was young when she sang it, probably in her thirties or younger, and it's very powerful. Miriam Makeba - When I've Passed On |
Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 20 Apr 09 - 04:30 PM It's remarkable to me that one or more irreverant souls among you failed to mention "Rosin The Beau." "I feel that old tyrant approaching, That cruel, remorseless old foe, And I lift up me glass in his honor; Take a drink with old Rosin the Beau!" |
Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: Genie Date: 20 Apr 09 - 05:07 PM I didn't mention it, but I thought about it. I searched to find if Fiddler's Green had been mentioned (It had.) and if Rosin The Bow had been (It had not.) I didn't post it just now, because I wanted to wait till I found a link to the particular version (lyrics) I had in mind. It definitely belongs here though. Nobody mentioned John Prine's "Please Don't Bury Me" song (Is that the title?) either. |
Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: Ref Date: 20 Apr 09 - 05:52 PM A couple from Cindy Kallet. Her version of David Dodson's "Farthest Field" and her own "Tide And The River Rising." |
Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: ranger1 Date: 20 Apr 09 - 08:28 PM I really like Dave Carter's When I Go. I learned it with the intent of singing it at my dad's memorial service last year, but there was so much else going on that I ended up not dong it. I am going to go sing it to him at his grave tomorrow morning, though. |
Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: Genie Date: 21 Apr 09 - 12:29 AM (Old) Rosin The Beau -- which I always thought was "Rosin The Bow" -- has several versions in the DT and forum. Here's one version that fits for "send offs" for departed friends: Old Rosin The Bow |

Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: GUEST,Bruce Michael Baillie Date: 09 Nov 10 - 12:50 PM Well I've decided for my funeral I want them to play Steve Tilstons 'On the road when I was young' from his album 'Ziggurat'. Great song. |
Subject: RE: Songs about 'crossing over' From: ClaireBear Date: 09 Nov 10 - 03:08 PM My "Rowing Song" has been used at funerals. The lyrics are in the forum (here), and Amos recorded me singing it at the Getaway last year and very kindly posted it on YouTube. That version has the lyrics slightly revised in a couple of places. Message me for updated lyrics, if wanted. For my own funeral, I'm undecided among "When I Go," the Rowing Song, and "I Shall Be Released." Oh, and "Chevaliers de la Table Ronde." |

Subject: Lyr Add: DAYS (Ray Davies) From: Paul Burke Date: 16 Mar 12 - 09:15 PM Odd that this thread has gone on so long without See My Friends by the Kinks. And from the same stable Days: Thank you for the days, Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me. I'm thinking of the days, I won't forget a single day, believe me. I bless the light, I bless the light that lights on you believe me. And though you're gone, You're with me every single day, believe me. Days I'll remember all my life, Days when you can't see wrong from right. You took my life, But then I knew that very soon you'd leave me, But it's all right, Now I'm not frightened of this world, believe me. I wish today could be tomorrow, The night is dark, It just brings sorrow anyway. Thank you for the days, Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me. I'm thinking of the days, I won't forget a single day, believe me. Days I'll remember all my life, Days when you can't see wrong from right. You took my life, But then I knew that very soon you'd leave me, But it's all right, Now I'm not frightened of this world, believe me. Days. Thank you for the days, Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me. I'm thinking of the days, I won't forget a single day, believe me. I bless the light, I bless the light that shines on you believe me. And though you're gone, You're with me every single day, believe me. Days. |
