Does anyone have a suggestion for a song to sing at a funeral for a long time history buff? His widow has requested something western, not too depressing.Big Rock Candy Mountain or Red Sails in the Sunset were two that she mentioned.

Happy Trails comes to mind. Also Desert Silvery Blue is really nice.

If you go to the DigiTrad search box up above and type in the words cowboy and western, then hit GO, you will find many songs come up which you could look through.

Good luck,

kat

Last "Western" Christian funeral we did used "Wings of a Dove". Like the Happy Trails idea, too, but some denomonations require that the song be "religious........."

How about "I'll Fly Away"? or "Angel Band"?

Ashes on the Sea, by Utah Phillips. Written as a song in remembrance of Woody Guthrie. See THREAD

Believe it or not, my mother in law has requested "Wish Me Luck as You Wave Me Goodbye". She is now 90 and still going very strong!

Lots of "Funeral" music in the collection, but not much "Western" - oodles of "Nautical". Apparantly in the 1840s even "Protestant" traditions used the "Chant" quite a bit, many of which were for funerals - including one I've been working on "Calm on the Bosom of Thy God" which shows potential - but probably not what you're looking for.

May the Spirit lead to one which is appropriate and effective.

I work at a funeral home and for a memorial service (cremation)we had the widow ask to have 'Blowing in the Wind' sung. Everyone got a laugh out of the request, even the widow, when she realized what she had said

"Stones and Water" by Beth Neilson Chapman merits consideration IMHO.
