Subject: BS: Inauguration: Anybody going? From: Mrrzy Date: 12 Nov 08 - 12:49 PM To see Obama anointed, or whatever? Also, separate thread above the line, but what are the good inauguration songs? |

Subject: RE: BS: Inauguration: Anybody going? From: KB in Iowa Date: 12 Nov 08 - 01:04 PM One of my wife's best friends is going. She made hotel reservations last January, just in case. She was very active in the campaign from the get go. |

Subject: RE: BS: Inauguration: Anybody going? From: Bill D Date: 12 Nov 08 - 03:09 PM I live 14 miles from the event, but I doubt I will brave the crowds. I DO wonder, though, if I might be brave enough to cash in on the HUGE need for lodging for those coming from all over. I gather hotel rooms are essentially gone, and private homes are being rented for up t0 $10,000 or more for the week. It is quite tempting to put up a few folks and make a few $$$$ |

Subject: RE: BS: Inauguration: Anybody going? From: Sorcha Date: 12 Nov 08 - 03:55 PM Are you KIDDING? Go all that way, spend all that money, to stand outside at the back of hundreds of thousands of people, can't see, can't hear what is going on, and freeze my behind off? Yer outta yer mind. The telly will have a better view. |

Subject: RE: BS: Inauguration: Anybody going? From: Joe Offer Date: 12 Nov 08 - 04:49 PM I used to enjoy working in downtown Sacramento, because the candidates would usually speak from the steps of the state capitol building. There were also some good rallies there. I got to sing for a labor rally once, doing a solo on the capitol steps in front of a pretty large audience. I also went to a wonderful peace rally there, before we invaded Iraq. The crowds were big, but manageable. Oftentimes, I'd run into people I hadn't seen for years. And it was a thrill to hear well-known people in person. Sure, it would have been easier to see them on television, but there's something wonderful about the energy of an enthusiastic crowd. Would I go to the inaugural? I'm not so sure of that - I think the crowds will be overwhelming, and there's a good chance a lot of the people there will be cold, miserable, and unable to see anything. That's another advantage Sacramento has - the weather. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: Inauguration: Anybody going? From: Bill D Date: 12 Nov 08 - 05:43 PM I can no longer trust my back and sciatic nerve if I have to stand on hard surfaces for long periods. I would be on my feet for many hours if I went down there. (and who knows what the weather will be in Jan.?) In Nov.,1969, I rode a bus from Kansas for 24 hours to the "March Against Death" in Washington DC. Slept in a church, heard Pete Seeger & Arlo Guthrie sing from the Lincoln Memorial (though not NEAR close enough to see them), then got back on the bus with the worse backache I ever had and rode 24 hours home. That was my introduction to huge crowds and cold...with pain... I will watch on TV, thank you. I was in my 30s then. |
