Subject: BS: Earthquake prediction (Yoshio Kushida) From: GUEST,Wolfgang Date: 26 Sep 03 - 06:54 AM You may have read or not that on September, 15th, Yoshio Kushida, a self-taught Japanese radio astronomer, went public predicting there would be a strong earthquake in Tokyo within the next two days. His theorizing in a nutshell: Earth magma movement is different before an earthquake, influencing ions in the earth atmosphere leading to detectable differences in the electromagnetic field. He was not taken very serious by most researchers. With the news yesterday (and last week), some researchers already have said their: 'Kudos to...' and publicly announced they would now have a closer look. Kushida was off in location, magnitude and time, but he was too close to shrug off his idea. It may turn out to be a one hit wonder (many earthquakes in Japan, predict one for next year and you'll be right) or it may turn out to be the onset of making earthquake prediction as good as one-week weather prediction, for a start. We'll see. However, it shows how science works: Make a successful prediction and you will not be ignored any longer. However, before your ideas get accepted finally, your track record must be much better than one hit. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake prediction (Yoshio Kushida) From: masato sakurai Date: 26 Sep 03 - 12:50 PM The news is THIS (CNN). I've never heard of Yoshio Kushida, whose prediction may not be taken seriously. Meanwhile, there was a destructive earthquake in Hokkaido (northern Japan) yesterday, but I (Tokyoite) was sound asleep and didn't feel the tremor. We've had too many quakes and any prediction could not be completely off the mark. ~Masato |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake prediction (Yoshio Kushida) From: TIA Date: 27 Sep 03 - 09:25 AM It's a lot to read, but here is a comprehensive discussion of the feasibility of deterministic prediction of specific quakes |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake prediction (Yoshio Kushida) From: Wolfgang Date: 13 Oct 03 - 06:59 AM Scientific opinion article about earthquake forecasting (from Seismological Research Letters) There often have been reports about unexplained lighting effects in the earth atmosphere in temporal proximity to an earthquake. There could be something real and explainable in those reports if the dissenting guys turn out to be right after all. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake prediction (Yoshio Kushida) From: Rapparee Date: 13 Oct 03 - 10:02 PM Any news about the upper level lights from the space station? Satellites have been up there for a long time -- any report from them? I'm not being nasty, just curious. |

Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake prediction (Yoshio Kushida) From: Little Hawk Date: 13 Oct 03 - 11:13 PM Well, I hope they do find reliable ways of predicting earthquakes (well ahead of time). It would certainly help save lives and some property. In the meantime, I predict that Yoshio Kushida will predict another earthquake. - LH |
