Subject: Online sympathy cards/Russian tragedy? From: mg Date: 04 Sep 04 - 12:37 PM Are there any that people know of? I know there were lots after 9/11 and other sad events. I did a quick Google search but didn't find anything. If there aren't any, and that is unlikely, anyone game to start one? mg |

Subject: RE: Online sympathy cards/Russian tragedy? From: katlaughing Date: 04 Sep 04 - 01:18 PM While this site doesn't have a place for cards/messages to be posted, it is trying to help: moscowhelp.org. In the meantime, I've started a blog expressly for this purpose, mary. Please post messages of sympathy at http://russianchildren.blogspot.com/. If anyone comes across a way to get the messages to the appropriate people, please let me know. Thanks, kat |

Subject: RE: Online sympathy cards/Russian tragedy? From: wysiwyg Date: 04 Sep 04 - 03:17 PM I don't have time right now to navigate through their site, but the ICRC is an organization likely to have activities or contact with other groups, that could lead to getting those messages deleivered, or to making people there aware where to find them on the Web. Maybe you can check it out. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works around the world on a strictly neutral and impartial basis to protect and assist people affected by armed conflicts and internal disturbances. It is a humanitarian organization with its headquarters in Geneva, mandated by the international community to be the guardian of international humanitarian law, and is the founding body of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. While the ICRC maintains a constant dialogue with States, it insists at all times on its independence. Only if it is free to act independently of any government or other authority can the ICRC serve the interests of victims of conflict, which lie at the heart of its humanitarian mission. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: Online sympathy cards/Russian tragedy? From: CarolC Date: 04 Sep 04 - 03:25 PM Looks like I didn't have the right sense about what "online sympathy card" means in this context. I guess I missed the ones referred to in the opening post. |

Subject: RE: Online sympathy cards/Russian tragedy? From: katlaughing Date: 04 Sep 04 - 04:34 PM I don't think there were any to miss, Carol. I think what mary meant was, was there a place online at which one could post their condolences. If one went to send a sympathy card from the link you gave, they'd have to have an email addy to send it to in Russia. At least that's the way I took it. More like a condolences book in which to sign, I think. kat |

Subject: RE: Online sympathy cards/Russian tragedy? From: mg Date: 05 Sep 04 - 12:52 AM I thought of something else...let's make them a tape of songs..I know a lullaby tape exists but I think this should be tailor made. I think we should call it "All through the night" and I would like to sing that song in English. Perhaps someone else could do it in Welsh. We could have songs in a dozen languages at least just from here. I can not volunteer to take this on as I have wretched equipment..well, I guess I could but it would be a wretched product. mg |

Subject: RE: Online sympathy cards/Russian tragedy? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 05 Sep 04 - 04:25 AM I think it's just beyond any words of sympathy in any language. That this happened AGAIN (remember the cinema where dozens of people were killed by the so-called rescuers?), shows that we should be talking to the 'rebels', training the Russians in negotiation and trying to sort the problem out from the root. It's like using Agent Orange on a field. You take out the weeds but you also take out the crop. There MUST be a different solution and we MUST help them find it. LTS |
