Subject: RE: Eruption has started in Iceland just now From: skarpi Date: 21 Mar 10 - 07:17 AM if its 160km from the capital , then we can off 51 km that s the way from me to the capital .. so its more like 110 km away from me but am still ok , this is a small eruption and its not gonna meld any glacier ( yet ) becouse tis between two glacier ( Mýrdalsjökull( KATLA ) and Eyjafjalla ) in Mýrdalsjökull we have another volcano a Huge one and it has not erupted for about 100 hundred years it belongs to the same volcanic line as Laki ..and also Hekla volcano is also ready to go up anytime now , there we have only 20 to 40 min notice ...:O) from my hometown on the other hand we have several volcano from 10 to 50 km away ..and so far no activity ..so thats nice ... and I have no interest to relive 1973 again the VestmannIsland eruption ..no thanks... but I guess mother earth is not going to ask me about that is it :O) hahahaha all the best Skarpi |

Subject: RE: Eruption has started in Iceland just now From: open mike Date: 21 Mar 10 - 08:18 AM i remember seeing video of lava flow i think it was iceland where they shot water on it by fire hoses to cool and therefore direct or deflect the flow. i was hoping to find a video, but could only find this Geological report. this shows that some effort can be made to interact with lava but that doesn't address the flooding due to lava heating glaciers. best wishes to Skarpi and family.... |

I hope it will remain so. Best wishes, Skarpi. Glad you and yours are safe. |

Subject: RE: Eruption has started in Iceland just now From: Celtaddict Date: 22 Mar 10 - 09:55 PM We have been watching this too; so glad to hear you are safe, Skarpi, and thanks for keeping us posted. I remember when we lived in Iceland going out in the evening to view the glow of the eruption and the lava flow, and the foolish folks who kept creeping a little closer and a little closer until the hot stony earth burst their tires. It all made for some amazing photos, but far better to see from a safe distance, and NOT with one's home or livelihood at stake! |

Subject: RE: Eruption has started in Iceland just now From: JohnInKansas Date: 23 Mar 10 - 02:34 AM It took them a couple of days, but MSNBC has finally noticed the Iceland eruption, and has declared that THE END OF THE WORLD IS AT HAND!!! Iceland volcano could have world consequences Most of the people in England will freeze to death in the next few months! North America will be blanketed with snow all summer! All the crops in Europe will die. Poisonous gas will kill millions (or maybe that's just part of the Viging attack?). [They must be having a slow week in the news room?) John |

Subject: RE: Eruption has started in Iceland just now From: skarpi Date: 23 Mar 10 - 05:03 AM what are you talking about or getting at ?? hahahahaha this is the joke of the year ....... but yes , this could have world consequences , this eruption is so small that you do not need to worry a bit .....its Katla ...she is one wo could lead to same problems that the world saw in 8 th of June 1783 and the after that ....it stopped in 1785 ...at the same time we got influenza to Iceland and we lost 20 % of the nation in this crisis ....... So just hope that Katla wont wake up ... she is a tikking time BOMB and could make things here ...like hell .....for many months ... but that is the worst ...thinking ...... one day at the time sweet jesus ...... |

Subject: RE: Eruption has started in Iceland just now From: skarpi Date: 23 Mar 10 - 09:03 AM well the Scientists would not be telling us this unless they are worry ...so worry yes , but just live one day at the time don´t let this take you mind out. the Eruption is steady now ,, the lava is running down hill into small valley´s , no marks of any earthquakes in Katla yet so .. the weather here is real bad the wind is from 38 mtr to 60 and this is the second day and its gonna be like this until tomorrow is this something to be worry about , autumnn we had a warm and slow weather and January was good and most of February also , and now since the eruption , the weather has been like this ...more than less ...a connection between .. kv skarpi |

Subject: RE: Eruption has started in Iceland just now From: GUEST Date: 23 Mar 10 - 09:20 AM "Scientists say history has proven that when the Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupts, Katla follows — the only question is how soon." Well, yes, surely the same is true of ALL volcanoes/ earthquake zones, etc... So we should evacuate all of Iceland, San Fransico Bay area, etc. etc.? As Skarpi says, live one day at a time.

Subject: RE: Eruption has started in Iceland just now From: SINSULL Date: 23 Mar 10 - 10:23 AM No it's not. There is a direct connection between these two volcanoes. I am not trying to create panic simply pointing out what scientists say is the case. And I did it under my own name. An odd subject to hide your identity for. |

Subject: RE: Eruption has started in Iceland just now From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 23 Mar 10 - 10:27 AM An excellent point, Guest. I was talking to my husband (a geologist) about this. The latest theory about Iceland is that it is located where the mid-Atlantic spreading center encountered a hot spot in the mantle. (For example, hot spots occur under Yellowstone and under the Hawaiian Islands.) That is why Iceland is the only place in the world where a spreading center appears above the sea floor. So for any given volcano, it makes sense to ask "Is it still on the spreading center? Is it still over the hot spot? Or has it moved off and lost its source of magma?" Another thing we all learned when Mount St. Helens erupted - eruptions are preceded by vibrations called harmonic tremors. They are caused by magma moving underground and can be detected by seismographs. I'm sure an educated nation like Iceland has the sense to check for harmonic tremors in its major volcanoes. No doubt the people at MSNBC were watching cartoons the whole time Mount St Helens went off, and they still don't know any of this stuff. |
|
Subject: RE: Eruption has started in Iceland just now From: Rapparee Date: 23 Mar 10 - 10:35 AM I suspect that ALL of the media is watching cartoons and playing with themselves. Their parents really should be watching them. |
|
Subject: RE: Eruption has started in Iceland just now From: SINSULL Date: 23 Mar 10 - 11:18 AM Unlike the powerful volcanos along the Pacific Rim where the slow rise of magma gives scientists early seismic warnings that an eruption is imminent, Iceland's volcanos are unique in that many erupt under ice sheets with little warning. A few tremors the morning of the eruption. No seismic warning. |
|
Subject: RE: Eruption has started in Iceland just now From: Stu Date: 23 Mar 10 - 11:49 AM Also, the volcanoes of Iceland of of a different type to the Pacific Rim cones which occur over subducting plate boundaries and are dangerous because of their explosive nature (a la Mount St. Helens); they tend to behave differently due to their relationship with the various types of plate boundary. As I understand it, the mid-atlantic ridge rises above sea-level at Iceland and I did't think it was above a mantle plume. Interesting stuff. "So we should evacuate all of Iceland, San Fransico Bay area, etc. etc.?" This is an interesting point our nameless friend has made. In truth, people ignore the warnings of vulcanologists, geologists and others when deciding where to live until it's too late. Many areas of human habitation encroach into zones many scientists will tell you are dangerous to live in. There's real concern about this, and near volcanoes like Vesuvius they are trying to persuade people not to live near the areas where pyroclastic flows might occur. |
|
Subject: RE: Eruption has started in Iceland just now From: SINSULL Date: 23 Mar 10 - 11:51 AM Some more info from Icelandic geophysicists: "The volcano has been inflating since the beginning of the year, both rising and swelling," said Pall Einarsson, a geophysicist at the University of Iceland's Institute of Earth Science. "Even though we were seeing increased seismic activity, it could have been months or years before we saw an eruption like this ... we couldn't say that there was an imminent risk for the area." Einarsson and Gudmundsson said the eruption could trigger a more damaging eruption at the nearby Karla volcano, which lies under the thick Myrdalsjokull icecap and threatens massive flooding and explosive blasts if it erupts. "One of the possible scenarios we're looking at is that this small eruption could bring about something bigger. This said, we can't speculate on when that could happen," Einarsson told The Associated Press. Iceland, a nation of 320,000 people, sits on a large volcanic hot spot in the Atlantic's mid-oceanic ridge. Volcanic eruptions, common throughout Iceland's history, are often triggered by seismic activity when the Earth's plates move and when magma from deep underground pushes it's way to the surface. |
