Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday Kendall From: Severn Date: 10 May 07 - 09:16 PM Oh Kendall Boy The pipes, the pipes are calling.... And if you ever finish your plumbing, Jaqui has some pruning for you to do. I know it just sounds like more past-overdue plumbing, much in the way that a mouldy fig is not a good date any more, but it isn't like that. But after all that, the piper will finally get paid, the Kendall will be lit up and hopefully won't be too plumb tuckered out to be properly tuckered in for the night, and a good birthday celebration will have been had by all. Complete with some spare best wishes from Laurel Maryland. Happy Birthday! |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday Kendall From: Susan A-R Date: 11 May 07 - 01:53 PM Late, as usual, but heart felt. Happy Birthday to you. I was actually thinking of you this noon. The Church of the Crucified one in Moretown VT is undergoing rennovations. The volunteers working on the church dropped off lunch for the staff of WDEV, an amazing radio station here in Vermont, and promised to do so again tomorrow if Ken Squire (the fellow who owns the station) will play "I Don't Look Good Naked Anymore" on his "Music to Go to the Dump by" program tomorrow morning. That song is popular with the most amazing folks. Anyway, wishing you a belated Happy Birthday, and many more. Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday Kendall From: Ron Davies Date: 12 May 07 - 06:08 AM Happy birthday Kendall (even if I'm late). Your version of "Lorena" on an early album (Lower Lights?) is still the standard by which all others are judged. Among other reasons, it's the only one I know that lets the song unfold--and does all 6 verses. I've been thinking how ironic that is that a quintessential Down-Easter did the perfect rendition of a song often associated with the South. And your versions of your stories are also immortal (typed" immoral" first--maybe it does pay to proofread after all)----especially the one about "Let's pretend we're married". May you long continue to grace our lives---and Mudcat. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday Kendall From: kendall Date: 12 May 07 - 06:46 AM Ron, what a priceless comment! Thank you so much. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday Kendall From: Ron Davies Date: 12 May 07 - 06:47 AM Kendall--You richly deserve it--and many more. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday Kendall From: Ron Davies Date: 12 May 07 - 06:56 AM Kendall-- Rita Ferrara and I (separately) sing "Lorena"--all 6 verses---quite a bit--and I bet that's due to your influence. It sure is in my case--and I try to take a measured pace--trying to emulate you. It's a great song to climb a hill with--on my walk to the Metro every weekday. It's 4 long songs or 5 short songs to the Metro. And with " Lorena" it's definitely 4. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday Kendall From: kendall Date: 12 May 07 - 08:31 AM I first heard this one by Tennessee Ernie Ford back in the late 50,s, but he didn't sing all of it. Too long for a standard LP. Then I got the rest of it from an old book of songs. I changed one word, from the heart THROBS on, to beats on, and I heard John Hartford sing it "beats" on. That's one of the many things I like about Folk Legacy; they will record the whole song regardless of its length. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy Birthday Kendall From: Ron Davies Date: 12 May 07 - 09:15 AM Kendall-- You're right--too many labels think they have to abridge a song to make it acceptable--and I'm not talking about 120-verse ballads. I understand that National Geographic abridged "Richmond is a Hard Road To Travel" in its LP about the Civil War--even though the original--9 verses, I think, is full of great information--and some humor. They cut it down to about 5, I think--it was a local singer, Andy Wallace, who sang the song on the LP --and he does a dynamite version--the whole thing. Labels just have to have a little more confidence that their audiences actually like the songs--and want to hear them all the way through. |
