I have subsisted in this God Forsaken SHITHUSE fo many years.
It stinks of festering corrupt Polititions, along with the rancid smell of chip fat, and you cannot go anywhere without being Mugged, Raped, or Murdered.
It also has the largest Council estate in Europe (Bransholme) where all of Satans Demons live, so I firmly Beleive that Hull is Hell on earth.

New contender, Sheffield. [ same poem ]

I've walked at' neet through't Sheffield lane.
Well 'twere same as being in hell,
Where furnaces thrust out tongues of flame,
That roared like' wind on't fell

Hell gets a lot of bad press but it's damnably hard to verify the things said about it. Since Hull's detracters are so readily available, one is forced to believe that Hull is worse. You have to go with the best evidence.

RE: "Dalesman's liturgy"

Hull - Those taken up for vagrancy, drunkeness or otherwise thrown into the local lock-up were liable (thanks to the local magistrates) for impressmernt into the Navy at times of a 'Hot Press'.

Halifax - The town of Halifax employed an early form of Guillotine ('The Halifax Gibbet'), IIRC they were fairly swift in its employment (I seem to recall reading somewhere of thieves taken on one market day and topped on the next).

Hell - I'll leave that to others.

Fom Hell, Hull and Halifax, Good Lord Deliver me.

(On of my old bosses - a Yorkshireman himself - used to quote it as:
"From Elland, Hull and Halifax..." - Ah well, there's nowt so queer as folk.)

Walrus

Come on leadfingers, if you want to avoid folkies, HEAVEN is the one to steer clear of. All those celts playing harps on a cumulus. I'll take 'ell and 'ull in turn for the rest of eternity if I get my druthers.

Hull is worse than Hell. I can vouch for that, because I have been to Hull. It's a dreadful place. Anything bad you can say about a city can be said about Hull. It's filthy, depressing, and crime-ridden. Its denizens must rank among the very worst dregs of humanity. At first I was disturbed at the thought of how an immense tidal wave could at any moment come off the North Sea and annihilate Hull, but then I got to thinking about Hull, and I read this thread, and it became plain to me that if Hull were wiped out in an instant, it could only benefit the rest of the British Isles. Hull is unspeakably awful. It's like a nightmare, frozen in time. It's like a thousand days spent eating cold oatmeal while watching the teletubbies!

And you know why it's definitely worse than Hell? Because Hell doesn't exist, that's why! If Hell did exist, they would be jealous of Hull and would probably relocate there as soon as they could bribe the city council and get the place rezoned.

The man who helped abolish slavery was from Hull (William Wilberforce) and "The Beautiful South" and Tom Courtney the actor who starred as "Billy Liar" and "The Spiders from Mars" and 2 winners of "Stars in Your Eyes" and one of "The League of Gentlemen" and Robinson Crusoe I was lead to believe so Hull can't be all that bad can it?

Regards.

Sidewinder.

Burn Baby Burn! I thought Hull was full of Ye Olde traditional public bars where people still stood around pianos singing Danny Boy with sawdust underfoot. Where everybody knows your name and can tell what you drink by the cut of your jib etc. Without the big screen loud hailers that now seem to permeate the watering holes of Merry Old England and farther afield. Surely you are not going to shatter my illusion of an untouched and unspoiled corner of civilisation where traditional folk music and quality ale await the weary traveller.

Regards.

Sidewinder.

Kingston upon Hell could rightly take Hull's crown as the binge drinking capital of the universe, but it'll be a close run thing.

The beer is very good in Hell. The refrigeration equipment isn't up to much, though.
