Subject: RE: BS: A Silly Survey about Corn (Maize) From: Charley Noble Date: 29 Oct 06 - 07:29 PM Male. Typewriter style, 3 or 4 rows at a time from port to starboard. I'm not sure what they've done to the corn but what we get in the stores now seems to be as sweet as fresh-picked. They probably have injected it with sugar, or maybe it's a new hybred involving genes spliced in from sugar beets. I do hope this is serious research, which contributes at least a kernal of truth. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: BS: A Silly Survey about Corn (Maize) From: KateG Date: 30 Oct 06 - 01:52 PM terrier corn is wind polinated, so if you want corn on your cobs you have to plant in in large squarish blocks rather than single rows. I found that even planting a 5 x 20 foot block gave rather poor results on the upwind side. |
Subject: RE: BS: A Silly Survey about Corn (Maize) From: MMario Date: 30 Oct 06 - 02:02 PM what we get in the stores now seems to be as sweet as fresh-picked When I was in college, some mumble-memble years ago, they were beginning to select and breed for corn that had low levels of a particular enzyme that is the main cause of sugar to starch conversion after picking of corn. It's amazing, though, how sweet even field corn is if fresh-picked at the right stage of growth. |
Subject: RE: BS: A Silly Survey about Corn (Maize) From: Bill D Date: 30 Oct 06 - 02:30 PM Uncle Dave...I thought the 'ideal' was to have a pot of boiling water on a cart, and take it to the field....peeling an ear or two and bending the stalk over TO the water... |
Subject: RE: BS: A Silly Survey about Corn (Maize) From: terrier Date: 30 Oct 06 - 07:22 PM Thanks KateG. The corn patch I planted was only about Five foot square and in a very windy spot. The seed packet made it sound too easy. Maybe I'll try a more shaded spot next season. BTW, the terrier puppies loved chewing on the cobs. ;) |
Subject: RE: BS: A Silly Survey about Corn (Maize) From: Kaleea Date: 30 Oct 06 - 08:16 PM 1. I'm a person of the female persuasion. 2. depends. If it's corn on a stick, I tend to go round & round. If it's corn with a thingamabob on each end one of those nifty special corn on the cob dish thingies where I can have more butter to dip it in, I probably will chomp typewriter style--after taking off my glasses, & hopefully with a lovely soon to be butter spotted linen napkin tied round my neck! |
Subject: RE: BS: A Silly Survey about Corn (Maize) From: Joybell Date: 31 Oct 06 - 05:41 PM Female. Around and around - but switching ends, in threes, until I reach the middle. I love threes. Joy |
Subject: RE: BS: A Silly Survey about Corn (Maize) From: Bat Goddess Date: 31 Oct 06 - 06:37 PM Female - typewriter But I do grab it with my lower teeth first, then pull the kernals off with my top teeth. Ayuh, full set o' choppers. Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: A Silly Survey about Corn (Maize) From: Scoville Date: 31 Oct 06 - 09:01 PM I had a male friend who ate typewriter-style, but he had to lick the extra butter off first. He had a surprisingly long tongue. I think it was one of the most disturbing things I've ever witnessed. |

Subject: RE: BS: A Silly Survey about Corn (Maize) From: MMario Date: 01 Nov 06 - 01:11 PM how can one switch ends in three when there are only two ends? mightily confuzzled. |
Subject: RE: BS: A Silly Survey about Corn (Maize) From: Ebbie Date: 01 Nov 06 - 01:18 PM That's CORNfuzzled, MM. |
Subject: RE: BS: A Silly Survey about Corn (Maize) From: Ella who is Sooze Date: 02 Nov 06 - 03:49 AM Female... around and around, then typewriter and around and a around... with sometimes a pause for a butter swoosh, pick of the teeth (descretly of course - madame mims school of deportmant wouldn't have it any other way). yum yum! |
Subject: RE: BS: A Silly Survey about Corn (Maize) From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 05 Nov 06 - 08:33 PM I was expelled from the community garden. (Who would guess?)
My crime? Planting "raspberry Indian pop-corn." It found a promiscuous way into surrounding neighbor's hybrid "mellow-yellow," and "sweet-sunshine," and "white-sugar." Unfortunately, for them, their cobs were infested with occasional "darky kernals."
Unfortunately, for me, I had a few dozen extra "old-maids" than usual.
If it is not popped, its intended for hogs.
Sincerely,
JEFFyP Post your PAPER to this thread with references....if you dare....good-luck. |
Subject: RE: BS: A Silly Survey about Corn (Maize) From: jeffp Date: 05 Nov 06 - 09:22 PM Thanks for the reminder, Gargy. I compiled the results a few nights ago, but forgot to post them. I started with a hypothesis that there was a gender disparity in the distribution of typewriter vs. lathe eaters, i.e., more men eating typewriter-style and more women eating lathe-style. The data, however, showed the proportions to be virtally identical between the sexes. Males were 62% typewriter, 24% lathe and 14% other. Females were 64% typewriter, 24% lathe and 12% other. Seems to invalidate my hypothesis. Oh well, it was a lot of fun. Thanks again to everybody for playing along. Jeff |
Subject: RE: BS: A Silly Survey about Corn (Maize) From: catspaw49 Date: 06 Nov 06 - 01:02 AM Actually Jeff, it proves that only 24% of the people, regardless of gender, know how to eat corn properly. Spaw |
