Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest (Quebec) 18 & 19 July From: john f weldon Date: 20 Jul 08 - 08:12 AM That was indeed a swell time. Great performances and a lot of just hanging out in an Orchard, drinking beer and shooting the breeze with some friends. Bruce & Ron Bankley's double-version of Bruce's One Man Standing... ...a lot of weirdness from Jou Tou... ...well, there were many memorable moments. Congratulations, Beer. Standing ovation. |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest (Quebec) 18 & 19 July 2008 From: Azizi Date: 20 Jul 08 - 09:16 AM I want to alert people that I just started a new Mudcat thread about Bruce Murdoch's new CD "Matters of the Heart". Here's the hyperlink to that thread: thread.cfm?threadid=112880&messages=1 Please post your comments about Bruce's new CD on that thread. And if you've heard some of the songs on that CD from radio shows that Bruce has been on, or otherwise, and are waiting with great anticipation to hear the actual CD, but haven't heard it yet, you can spend some of the time waiting for your CD talking about Bruce Murdoch's music on that new thread. And last but not least, I announced on that thread and would like to announce on this thread that Bruce Murdoch has a new website at http://www.brucemurdoch.com/ That website was designed/developed by Mudcatter olddude {Dan O'Connell}, Dan volunteered his time, energy, and knowhow to make Bruce's website a reality. The website is still under construction, waiting for sound clips and other material from Bruce, but it's already looking good! Thanks, Dan!!! And thanks Bruce for your music. |

Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest (Quebec) 18 & 19 July 2008 From: bankley Date: 20 Jul 08 - 02:34 PM ....it's raining like crazy today... all the high humidity can defy gravity for only so long... we got lucky yesterday... hot, sunny and swampy... just a short afternote on the days festivites.... not long after our set, me and Lorraine checked into an inn about a mile from the site, ( courtesy of Adrien), left the guitar and returned to enjoy the full moon rising behind the stage and the remaining fine acts.. when we got back to the Inn... we just sat in the car to enjoy the deep silence of the countryside, unwinding.... when we finally went to enter around 1:00 we found that we were locked out... so we returned to the empty fest site with the intention of trying to sleep in the car and collect the guitar in the morning... a light was in in the small bldg. that had served as a bar and instrument 'lock-up'... a man and woman were talking and cleaning up.... we told them what had happened and asked if it would be allright to try and sleep in the car..... well, they wouldn't hear of it... she called down to the Inn and the door was unlocked.... turned out that some other guest had locked the door behind after getting there earlier.... the two people who were so kind happened to be the owners of the farm that hosted the Fest... Gary and Linda (McMillan) Upton.... it was a funny way of making their acquaintance.... and I'm so glad that I did. Down to earth farm folks that opened up their home and hearts to all of us.... they were really impressed by the quality of music and the organization.... there are a lot of little things that add up to make something great.... this was one of them... it was a BLAST !!!!... thanks Beer... |

Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest (Quebec) 18 & 19 July 2008 From: KenM Date: 21 Jul 08 - 02:01 AM The rain (and thunder and lightening) on Friday night made me feel like I was back home in southwest Florida but the vibe inside the barn at the jam session was an indicator that this was going to be a special weekend......and oh Lordy, what a great day Saturday turned out to be. What a great evening concert!! Are there any instruments that Jou Tou do not know how to play? And hey, if he's going to sing a song about Verdun and Pointe St. Charles....I'm all in! And what to say about that marvelous set by Bruce Murdoch? Oh my, I closed my eyes and listened and I was transported back to the late sixties in Montreal. And how about Ron Bankley's version of "A Fool Like Me" and their combined (and different) versions of "Last Man Standing")? Later, I sat with Bruce and Jeri and April, listening to Garnet Rogers and watching the moon rise over the festival site....Perfect!! Let's first of all give kudos to Adrien (Beer) who made this event happen. But he is not alone....Gary and Linda (MacMillan) Upton who hosted the event, my new friends Fred and Ruth Sundborg who taught me more about dairy farming in one weekend than I thought I could possibly know, Joe Byrd, and many, many, more. This afternoon, I drove from Adrien's to Pierre E. Trudeau Airport at Dorval with Bruce's new cd and later, drove from Miami to Ft. Myers with both that cd and "Crossing North". End of a perfect weekend! Cheers, Ken |

Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest (Quebec) 18 & 19 July From: C. Ham Date: 21 Jul 08 - 10:12 AM I had a wonderful time Saturday at Apple Hollow. Mostly, the music ranged from good to great. Highlights: Bruce Murdoch, Ron Bankley, the excellent songwriters' circle with Mike Regenstrief, Dara Weiss, Jou Tou, Four Strings And A Squeezebox, Crossing North, Storming Norman. Ron Bankley's version of "Fool Like Me," my all-time favorite Bruce Murdoch song, was awesome. Bruce's own performances were superb. Minor disappointment: Garnet Rogers. His voice was worn out and he seemed completely fatigued. He mentioned it was the last show of a 5 week tour. Maybe he should hold his tours down to 4 weeks. I've seen Garnet many times and his performance was far from his usual standard. Still, his songs are great and he was a trooper about doing the show. Chris Crilly's contributions on keyboard, fiddle and percussion were very good. One big disappontment: Coming out of Dara Weiss' in the Barn stage, I heard what sounded like a great gospel group coming from the main stage. When I got there, I saw what I thought was a karaoke show with the gospel singers performing with pre-recoded tracks. However, at the end of the last song, after the audience applause had ended, the pre-recorded cheers and applause continued throiugh the speakers with one of the singers trying to catch the eye of the soundman to tell him to turn it off. It took about 30 or 40 seconds for the soundman to do it. That led me to think it wasn't karaoke, but lip-synching. The gospel group would have been much better performing a cappella or with a single accompanist. When I go to hear LIVE music, I do not want to hear karaoke or lip-synching. In my opinion, there's no place for that at any live music event, let alone a folk festival. If this group really needs a big band to perform, then maybe a small folk festival is not the place for them. Anyway, it was a great day in apple country. Congratulations to Adrian and all others involved for a fine first festival. I'm looking forward to next year. The next folk festival on my agenda is Ottawa in mid-August. |

Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest (Quebec) 18 & 19 July 2008 From: KenM Date: 21 Jul 08 - 02:39 PM John and Tom..........I took a number of pictures both at the jam Friday night and all day Saturday. I copied the file to Adrien's computer yesterday morning and since I'm a tad technologically challenged, I think I'll let him send them to you rather than try it myself. Ken |

Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest (Quebec) 18 & 19 July 2008 From: Azizi Date: 22 Jul 08 - 09:21 AM I just received a pm from Adrien {Beer} who asked me to convey this message from him and to convey a message from Bruce as well. Adrien asked that I let people know that he is still coming down from the festival and still has lots to do. He thanks you all for your well wishes & your support. Adrien has also spent some time after the festival with Bruce. Bruce doesn't have access to a computer now, but he's told Adrien that he will be writing on Mudcat shortly. Bruce also wants people to know that he very much appreciates the well wishes, and the compliments, that Mudcatters and other people on his website have expressed about his festival performance and about his Matters Of The Heart CD. Also, Bruce wants people to know that he's aware of that "Bruce has a Purple Face thread" although he hasn't read it yet. He thinks the idea of this thread is a hoot {or some words like that}. I look forward to Adrien's and Bruce's return to active posting on Mudcat threads. In particular, I can't wait to read what Bruce's comebacks will be to some of the posts on that Purple Face thread. :o) Here's a hyperlink to that thread in case people haven't had the pleasure of reading it yet: thread.cfm?threadid=112902&messages=54 Why does Bruce Have a Purple Face? |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest (Quebec) 18 & 19 July From: Mike Regenstreif Date: 25 Jul 08 - 09:49 AM I just want to add my congratulations to Adrien and everyone else connected to the Apple Hollow Folk Festival for a job extremely well done. I'm looking forward to future editions. |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest (Quebec) 18 & 19 July 2008 From: Beer Date: 25 Jul 08 - 06:30 PM Thank you all for the congratulatory notes. They are very much appreciated. I still don't feel like writing much due to the fact that I have been struggling with a bad cold and a fever almost since the festival. I guess the running around and the coming down afterwords was just the right receipt for a floating virus. I have lots of pictures and will get to them very soon. We made lots of mistakes but none that can't be corrected. I asked the property owners to think about next year and give me an answer in two weeks if we are to continue. It is their land and they also went through a lot. I do feel positive however. Later, Adrien |

Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest (Quebec) 18 & 19 July 2008 From: KenM Date: 26 Jul 08 - 12:21 PM My friend.......I can't tell you how much I enjoyed my weekend. Your family is completely nuts......which, as they would say in the Maritimes, "is the right and proper thing...". Take care of your health, Adrien. This old boy from Verdun, now relocated in southwest Florida, sure enjoyed my weekend at the Festival. My wife has commented that since my visit to the Great White North, I seem to have added "eh" to my speech. You didn't have anything to do with that, did you? eh? |

Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest (Quebec) 18 & 19 July From: Jeri Date: 27 Jul 08 - 12:35 PM http://www.applehollowmusicfest.org/english.htm. I'm in Toronto. What an amazing time with wonderful people! Beer, your family IS nuts. I'd like to thank you and them, the proprietors of McMillan's Orchard (clever way of disguising the fact I can't remember names) and Peace for making my time there spectacular. I'm still tired and I think I developed a cold yesterday, so I KNOW I had fun! Wish I was 20 again... or 30, or... younger. Love to you all. |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest (Quebec) 18 & 19 July 2008 From: Peace Date: 27 Jul 08 - 01:29 PM I had a great time at the festival and it was wonderful to meet so many people either for the first time or again after a loooong time. Got to co-author a song with Jeri Corlew. She's fantastic to work with. We were able to get two days in the studio and we finished two songs for Youtube. What a process. Guitar track, then my voice track then April's voice then Jeri's voice. Then twice through lipsynching/filming then three hours editing. However, I guess if it was easy then everybody'd be doing it. Simon Jodoin is a remarkable engineer and Ron Bankley gave us some ground rules going in. That man is an incredible musician, writer and singer. Wonderful to work with on or off the stage. I think we'll release one of the Youtube songs in a few weeks and the other in about six to seven weeks. |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest (Quebec) 18 & 19 July 2008 From: KenM Date: 27 Jul 08 - 02:53 PM The link that Beer (Adrien) sent won't get you to the pictures. Google the festival and that will work. Ken |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest (Quebec) 18 & 19 July 2008 From: KenM Date: 27 Jul 08 - 03:14 PM Jeri......Linda and Gary Upton are their names and two finer people you will never meet....just ask Ron Bankley, who managed to get back into his B & B with their help on Saturday night. All of the folks who live down in Adrien's neck of the woods are pretty special...Fred and Ruth Sundborg, who I stayed with, are dairy farmers, and are just flat out, extraordinary people. Bill and Bernice Paxton, who kept the libations flowing are pretty cool as well. Speaking of Adrien's family, I have a picture of Bruce with two members of his family taken at Adrien's house on Sunday morning. I'm holding on to it for ransom for a seat when he collects his Juno....or Grammy....or both! Cheers, Ken |
