Rick ... Reading your recent posting regarding your taste in humor (thank you, by the way) I thought you might enjoy a little Finnish humor! Lappish, actually. The Northern Finns are known for their reticence, as demonstrated in the following classic stories:

Two brothers leave their home for their two week trapline. Four hours up the trail, a rabbit runs across the snow in front of the brothers. The one brothers say,"Look! Kani!" Two weeks later, as they were returning home, they came to same same place where the rabbit had crossed their path. The other brother said, "Yaaaah!"

That night, the one brother cooked their meal. After supper, he asked his brother, "how did your like supper?" The next morning, the brother was gone, but there was a note. It said, "I didn't want to argue!"

CHEERS, Bob

Rick and Heather,

Each night of the Getaway, one, some, or many of us will go out and sing our love and caring for you to the moon and tell the moon to beam it on to you. If you can, go out and look, and catch it full in the face and heart. Even if you can't look, feel it all shining down on you.

Matter of fact, anyone who is so inclined can start doing that right away--no need to wait for the Getaway. It is what we have to offer.

Strengh your way,

Janie

For some reason, my appetite has come back. Eating like a hog. Guess the body is saying "enough weight loss, gotta put some pounds back on!"

Cheers and thanks

I was about to make a smart-ass comment about eating, but as my mind wandered through it's quagmire of "Vaguely Related Things I Find Mildly Amusing," it happened upon the "all you need is" syndrome. You know, well meaning folks of course, but always telling you that "All you need is ___________," and you'll feel better right away.

The world seems filled with people who for various reasons seem to believe that the solution to whatever ya' got is ______________(fill in the blank). Some are food freaks of several ilks. From the specific foods ("You need to eat 36 ounces of Brussel Sprouts each day") to the general ("All you need is a good meal"). There are too the exercise nuts with both specific and general suggestions. Then you have the herb folks, the vitamin supplement kooks, the general lifestyle changers, bone crackers, and a whole slew of of others.

On Chris Rock's HBO stand-up he says that since his family had little money and no insurance, the answer for everything medical was Robitussin-----Got a cold? Take some Robitussin. Got a stomach ache? Have some Robitussin. Got a broken leg? Pour some Robitussin on it. Got cancer? Drink lots of Robitussin" This reminded me of a friend's step-Dad who believed the answer to all of your medical ills was a "good physic."

I dunno'....Maybe the guy liked salts, castor oil, and enemas, but you could count on him in any conversation regarding someone's ill health to say, "All that boy needs is a good physic." After awhile I began thinking about this guy and his wife and what their life must be like.............Anyway, it ain't the answer I'm sure as this guy died of stomach and colo-rectal cancer a few years later.

Glad you're eatin' ..... Don't do the the "physic" thing though.......

So, Spaw, for reasons I cannot begin to comprehend, your comments about rummaging through what is at least at the moment amusing made me think of the thought of the day yesterday:
Pity the poor insomniac dyslexic agnostic: he lies awake at night wondering if there really is a dog.

Apollo 12? That would be the second moon landing with Conrad, Bean, and Gordon. Help me out here Kendall.........What am I missing?   Or are you talking about 13 with Lovell, Haise, and Swigert? O2 tank blew up on that one forcing abandonment of the moon landing and being a "successful failure" as they brought the crew back alive.

Here's another one instead more appropos to you Kendall......Remember the Maine!

A culinary treat I have yet to try was explained to me by old friend Pete the Spy.

Make a large kettle of Welsh Rabbit with lots of butter, cheddar, and ale. In it, poach the eggs, prior to placing the entire lot on good toast . Wash down with more ale -- Tom

Hey Rick! You need to try some good Guamanian food. Some beef kelaguen with red rice and fine dene sauce topped with a pile of barbeque and finished off with casava. If you like vinegar and soy sauce then Guamanian food is right up your alley. And if you like fish, generally fried, then head on over to your nearest Guam Restaurant.

Seriously I only just found this thread and was deeply affected by the news contained herein. Good luck with the fight.

I considered the tapeworm idea, SINSULL, but I think I'm just naturally skinny. The only time I ever started to get a bit of a tummy was when I drove a taxicab for 6 months, and spent 12 hours a day sitting in the wretched thing, eating junk food on the run. That sedentary a life can cause anyone to get a potbelly. It vanished quite soon after I quit driving cab.

There's another factor too. I have never married. I note that nothing on Earth can put weight on people like marriage does. I think it's psychological.

* * *

Thinking of you often, Rick...I hope you're doing better.

Well, Rick, you could always ask for Alzheimers...true story...an elderly woman in a nursing home was told she had inoperable cancer and would not live past a few months. She never remembered anything they told her and lived for about ten more years! It's really true! reminds me of the old Ruth Gordon quote, "How old would you be if you didn't know?"**bg**

Ah, well, you know you've got a permanent spot in my heart and what Bill and Art said, too. As well as lotsa love and energy for Heather, too.
