Well funny old thing, their Lordships have decided that I've spent too much time alongside again so I'm off to sea again! But this time it's a trip to see all the ports and places you hear about in shanties. The Eastern seaboard of the USA, Valipriso, Terra del Feugo, and Cape Horn! I'll try to keep you in touch if you want, but most images will be on the HMS SOUTHAMPTON website. See you in six weeks!(Hopefully!)

Chris-

The "Cape Horn" was named by the Dutch explorers, Jacob le Maire and Willem Schouten, who first mapped this region of the world in 1616 in honor of the home town, Hoorn, of their chief financial backer. For reasons best known to themselves, old sailors used to refer to this landmark as "Cape Stiff."

Here's an appropriate poem by C. Fox Smith to "cheer" you on the way:

CAPE STIFF

Cruel is the sea, and the hardest thing of all
Is her taking and her leaving, and the way it seems to fall,
How always it's the best men who have to hear the call…
Ah, Cape Stiff, and the big seas pouring!

And of all good sailormen that use the deep sea

Chris, if they offer you a run ashore in Punta Arenas, dont bother, when I went it was like an old 1960s Army camp )a collection of corrugated iron huts in the middle of Nowhere with a constant (minimum) Force 5 blowing)it seems to have improved slightly!! You do get about a bit,Dont you?

Avast there!

Hi guys! We sailed from Bridgetown Barbados this morning, so we are now heading westwards through the Cairbiann Sea(I can never spell it!)I had a good time there good cheap food and drink at the Bus Station, and a couple of nice bars on the beach (Not so cheap beer!)

Jack was up to his usual tricks, more fast talking to keep him out of jail! I'll post some Pics on the photos pages if its ok with the bosses!

The song says "Bound for Valipriso rounnd the Horn" But we're "Bound for the horn via Valipriso" One day the Navy will get the hang of tradition!!

If Phot is reading this thread - he should know that when and if his ship ever comes to the Port of Los Angeles, my husband and I would be glad to buy him dinner. The Port of Los Angeles is actually iin San Pedro, about a 40 minute drive from Los Angeles, but that's not much of a trip considering the thousands of miles Phot has sailed, right?

Morning all! You can tell it was a good run ashore in Lima last night, the mess square is covered in shaving foam, and most lads have very baggy heads! Guess who didn't go ashore and was working! Still at least Jack made it back without a police escort!

PoD wants a Llama to go shopping with, I haven't found one yet, but there are pelicans, and condors aplenty, not much use for shopping though!

So this is Chile then, why does it look like a desert? Valapariso is two stops away, but at least we can get off and strech our legs!

Ola! Well I´m in Iquique, and still haven´t found Jack, I think he´s still working his way overland to Valipriso. The ships at anchor, so it´s a boat transfer to the shore, but this place is great, fantastic history, beautiful streets and museums, cheap food and beer, but don´t come out after dark! It gets a bit scary, as some of the Yanks found out last night. I´m back off to the ship in an hour, but I´ll be back tomorrow with my gear, there are some cracking shots to be had here. It´s a shame that the weather is so bad, as the mountains would make a fantastic backdrop to the harbour!

Ola!! It is me again. Chris buggered off in his boat thing before I get back, so I has been on der road to try an catch up wiv im. Dis is a brill place, it´s not very wide, bit it´s really long. But all der local mutts ave bin showin me der sights, an lettin I sleep in their dens. I got to dis place called Iquique yesterday, an I could see Chris´ boat in der harbour, but I can´t get back on as I can´t swim dat far. So I spent der night in der bar! My head hurts dis mornin, der rum stuff dey hav ere is called ¨Havin a Club¨ is it caus what it makes your head feel like in der mornin? I needs to get back on der boat cause me paws is all sore from all dis walkin, an I really wants to come ome to see Joline an der pups. I has bin away far too long.

Well I'm not going round Cape Horn, as it's too dangerous for a Type 42! So we're going through the Patagonian channels to get to the Falklands. Valipriso was a great place to visit, a bit rough at night, but the local authorities are spending lots of cash in improving the place, I assume to attract the tourist dollar.

Jack dissapeared first night in, and re-appeared in the morning stained with red wine and smelling faintly of cheap perfume, I think he may have a few things to explain to Joline.............

Only just over a week until I fly back home now, Hurrah!! But it's 18 hours flying in a 747, with a one hour stop in Asension Island! I hate flying! Help!

Good Grief!!   What is the world coming to?   If 200-ton wooded sailing ships can do it and 7-ton (and smaller) yachts too for that matter, what the hell's the matter with a 4000 ton steel warship?

You wouldn't get Chichester, Rose, Knox-Jonston or even MacArthur going through the Magellan Strait - AND it's the easy way round. Don't let THAT get into the papers, after the CORNWALL fiasco!

(btw, did anyone hear the item about that, accompanied by a parody of 'Drunken Sailor' on R4 this morning?)

The 1 hour stop at Ascension sometimes stretches when the aircraft goes US.
The aircrew are usually only too pleased.
Try to get a swim at Comfortless Cove and take a look at the little sailors' cemetry there.

Well thats the Patagonian canals done! So I'm back in the Atlantic, almost! The secenery has been incredible, and so has the snow! Still it's much warmer that yesterday(-4!) and only 0c!

Funny to think you guys up north will be celebrating summer solstace, coz I'll be celebrating winter solstace! Hope to see you all up top, next week!

Did you find any sheep left in the Falklands? There was a rumour that after the late conflict with the Argentinians the herds were decimated, as they were shipped back to England as war brides.
