PUPPIES!... now sent 1 € to Bente and 1 $ to Sorcha...

Is it really "folk vlup"? Or rather "folk flop"?

I am sure there are lots of the second!

Maybe the windmills have "folk-flaps"?

Whatever; say "cheese" and tiptoe through the tulips!

Good Luck
Ernest

I'm betting he meant "pubs" - which would explain not remembering and mis-typing!

and hopefully he is booked @ a lot of them!

He does mean pubs, I had this misunderstanding with Skarpi before
I'm more worried about his keeping his finger in the dike, and assume you mean dyke Mary ! ¦¬] G

Yep, that is how Skarpi spells pubs. Why correct it, it sounds charming.

Have a ball, buddy.

Is Liedseplein(sp?) in Amsterdam still surrounded by little crowded cafes/pubs? One I remember had a very eccentric barman. His habit was to shout "Are there any English/Americans/French/Belgians/etc. Here?" And when someone would shout back where they were from he would jovially shout, "Ah, those (nationality) are (ridiculous and colourfully described stereotype)!" and go on to the next nationality. Far from offensive, everyone would be laughing at the absurdity of it all. One of my favourite nightspots, it was tiny, crammed with minute tables and mismatched chairs and barstools, and attracted the most diverse crowd you could imagine, where the most astonishing conversations could be had.

Have a good time, Skarpi. I wish I could be with you, as the Netherlands in May are pretty wonderful.

(I thought it had something to do with the legendary state of Dutch pavements.)

There are a few

festivals listed here

Remember that you are not too far from Belgium, France, Germany ...

Hi Skarpi,
I don't know you and am just a guest and lurker here, but I've loved visiting Iceland and loved living in Holland for three years, so I decided to write. Hope you have a great time over there. NL is actually a great country to get interested in Flamenco in--there are lots of classes and performances and I think that Rotterdam conservatory is one of the only places outside Spain with Flamenco guitar teaching. (There's probably more flamenco performances in Holland in a month or two than in Yorkshire in a year.)
If you are there next year in April, try to see the Utrecht outdoor blues festival, or if you get into Dutch music, the 'smartlappen festival' which are some kind of Dutch sad songs. Just about every city has an Irish pub....

Sorry to write so much and not give you any tips on anglo-american folk music--my own real passion for it postdates my time in NL.Have a koffie verkeerd or a witbiertje for me and best wishes!

Aye Megan L., he'd be in the dog house alright - for supping in a Vaux pub.
As for Rotterdam , it may have a fine conservatory for Flamenco, I will gladly accept the writers word, but it is not a pleasant place to lose ones way - be careful.
The "Sad Dutch songs" are not so much sad exactly, they're nostalgic, generally inward-looking ,extremely sentimental etc.
A British example might be "We'll meet again" and plenty of Brits of a certain age group love that type of song. It's all about the Dutch having their own songs, and their own "tradition" as opposed to having influenced from German Lieder .
I do believe Red Rose Cafe (Kleine cafe bij de Haven) comes from that ilk.

Try Den Haag, Java Straat, there was a pub called the "Shilleaghli" (Sp?) where they used to play folk music.
