Eric, a "hoser" is a moronic, dimwitted, chronically unemployed young man who is primarily interested in drinking beer, eating pizza and back bacon and other fast food, avoiding responsibility, and being a completely useless layabout and wastrel.

The word "hoser" is a euphemism for a ruder word: "f*cker"

It was coined by 2 Canadian comedians back in the 70's or 80's sometime. Those comedians are named Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis. Their version of the "hoser" was as I have described above.

Real hosers, however, are also very interested in having casual sex with any female who is willing, and they are very interested in smoking dope and having other drug experiences, and they are ALWAYS heavy tobacco smokers.

Thomas and Moranis avoided some of those areas for some reason. Their version of the "hoser" was a far more innocent version than the real thing by a long shot.

Hosers are total assholes. They are often in trouble with the law. They may break into your house while you are out, and if they do they will probably wreck the place just for spite. Real hosers range from the downright dangerous type to the merely annoying type.

Shane McBride, Mudcat's iconic hoser, is of the merely annoying variety, as he is basically harmless. This also goes for his brother Don. Merely annoying hosers can be quite amusing at times, as long as you don't live with them! This is to say, they are amusing....at a distance. They are not so amusing up close.

Hosers insert the word "like" in many places where it doesn't belong in sentences, because it helps them work their way over momentary mental blank spots they are afflicted with while speaking.

There are female hosers too, but they are not as common as male hosers. Female hosers are sometimes called "skanks", "airheads", that sort of thing.

The once famous "valley girls" were a California brand of female hoser. Think of Brittney Spears or Paris Hilton...without the money or the success, and you've basically got it. People who are referred to (rather unfairly) as "trailer trash" may or may not qualify as a subgenre of hosers all their own. The Canadian show "Trailer Park Boys" has made icons out of such people. If you haven't seen it...go out and rent the CDs NOW!!! You will soon know all you need to know about the lives of total, out and out, beyond hope hosers.

Canada is proud of its hosers, who are among the stupidest people the world has ever known, and we continue to celebrate them to this day.

And there is only a one letter difference between "hoser" and "loser"...

Owie, Little Hawk: I've never heard such a venomous definition of the term in my life. 'Hoser' as I know it is referring to a feckless young man with a liking for lots of beer and parties, a tendency towards being under-educated and under-employed, and a determination to be cheerful about his lack of ambition and positively joyous about employment insurance.

Here's a fine point. Female hosers insert the word "like" into their sentences even more often than male hosers do. It's a fact. Hang out at any bus stop, listen in, and you will soon discover it for yourself. The phrase "I'm like..." will normally be used to preface something they supposedly said to someone in a recent conversation.

If the word "like" were somehow removed from the English language, female hosers would lose approximately 15% of their daily vocabulary.

Little Hawk, you're Canadian and I'm not, so perhaps I should not take issue. BUT:

Bob & Doug MacKenzie (Thomas and Moranis' characters) have absolutely no criminal tendencies, except their proclivity for smoking pot, and the iconic "hoser" that they represent does not present a danager to you or me. These guys are too complacent, too loaded, too good-natured, and perhaps too dumb, to commit assault and battery or even robbery.

These characters pretty much define what a "hoser" is to the outside world. I will only believe that it means something entirely more sinister to Canadians in general if a few more of you express agreement with your characterization.

I also take issue with your classification of backbacon as "fast food." Pizza is indeed fast-food, but isn't backbacon more correctly categorized as "groceries"? You have to fry it up yourself, don't you? For all I know, there may be Canadian fast-food franchises that sell backbacon, but wouldn't they have to offer, say, backbacon sandwiches?

(Backbacon as a pizza toppiing doesn't count.)

For the uninitiated, "backbacon" is the Canadian name for what the rest of the world calls "Canadian bacon." Sort of like the French calling French Fries "pommes frites."

Or am I still supposed to say "Freedom Fries"? Never mind...

Oh yeah. eric... note that "Fer like" is correct in hoser grammar.

Insertion of a comma may have indicated to you LH's explanation. However, "Fer like...", is a commonly used hoser sentence initiation, akin to, say, "I say old chap, ..."

In this particular instance, the introductory nature is combined with the actual meaning, that being, "For Canucks."

I have never associated "hoser" with "fucker", although it may mean exactly so to some. To me, hoser means a lad who would stick his hose is any only skank after a night on the beer.

Not all Hosers are as negatively described.
Much like not all intellects are as smart as they seem!

Look, guys, I know for a fact that Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis chose the word "hoser" as a euphemism for the word "f*cker", because the latter word is a word hosers use a lot (and often in a good-natured sort of way), but you couldn't say "f*cker" on the kind of daytime comedy show those guys were doing on TV in the 80's. Besides, they wanted to make Doug and Bob sort of cute and innocent, for more general audience appeal. TV wasn't as raw then as it is now.

Similarly, "hosehead" was a euphemism for "f*ckhead", another word that is popular with real hosers.

And then there was their usual exclamation "Take OFF!" which was a euphemism for "F*ck OFF!"...same basic reasoning.

They were sanitizing the daily life of the hoser for daytime TV.

Poppa Gator, you are quite right that back bacon is not technically fast food. It is real food. I should not have lumped it in with fast food.

I have already pointed out that many hosers are, in fact, quite harmless to anyone but themselves. The majority of them are probably harmless. But there are some who are not. I've seen a fair number of the former and a few of the latter.
