Subject: BS: Help with Welsh phrase From: Stu Date: 01 Jun 07 - 08:13 AM The last of the Welsh speakers in my family died some years ago, but mum and I still use tiny snippets of the language here and there (although I've never lived in Wales). One phase my Mum's Gran used was Welsh for 'up your arse', and we often use this now - can anyone spell it so I can write it down? Dim diolch, stigweard |

Subject: RE: BS: Help with Welsh phrase From: GUEST Date: 01 Jun 07 - 09:37 AM I don't know what the Welsh for "et in ano tuo" is, but why did you sign off with "no thanks"? |

Subject: RE: BS: Help with Welsh phrase From: Stu Date: 01 Jun 07 - 10:43 AM That'll be the English half of me exerting an undue influence over the Welsh half . . . I did of course mean Diolch yn Fawr |

Subject: RE: BS: Help with Welsh phrase From: sian, west wales Date: 01 Jun 07 - 01:00 PM Would it be, "twll dy din di"? (The 'up' is implied.) sian |

Subject: RE: BS: Help with Welsh phrase From: Stu Date: 01 Jun 07 - 01:04 PM I think that might be it - can you right it phonetically? |

Subject: RE: BS: Help with Welsh phrase From: BanjoRay Date: 01 Jun 07 - 07:01 PM For the LL sound, touch the tip of your tongue to your upper gum just behind your front teeth then exhale through your mouth. Sounds like a whale blowing... Ray |

Subject: RE: BS: Help with Welsh phrase From: sian, west wales Date: 02 Jun 07 - 12:01 PM Croeso, Stigweard. (Oh, and "Iechyd Da".) There are some that suggest that if you 'blow' out both sides of your tongue, you're a Learner. Then right or left side is a North/South thing ... but I can't remember which is which, and I've never done any independent study to support the theory ... sian |
