Catspaw:

No, it's about a young girl who would rather dance with a log driver than anyone else, because he's so nimble on his feet from "burling" logs, which to the uninitiated means rolling floating logs.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE LOG DRIVER'S WALTZ (Wade Hemsworth)
From:
Date: 09 Apr 99 - 10:09 PM

THE LOG DRIVER'S WALTZ

If you ask any girl in the parish around
What pleases her most from her head to her toes,
She'll say, "I'm not sure if its business of yours,
But I'd like to waltz with a log driver."

CHORUS: For he goes burling down the down white water.
That's where a log driver learns to step lightly.
It's burling down the down white water,
The log driver's waltz pleases girls completely.

When the drive's nearly over, I like to go down
And watch all the lads as they work on the river;
For I know one night they'll come into town,
And we all like to waltz with a log driver.

Now to please both my parents, I had to give way,
And dance with the doctor, the merchant, the lawyer.
Well, their manners were fine but their feet are like clay,
And none has the style of my log driver.

Well, I've taken my chances with all types of men,
But none is so sweet as my lad on the river,
And when the drive's over, if he asks me again,
I think I will marry my log driver.

WITH CHORDS:

If you (G) ask any girl in the par(C)ish around
What ple(D)ases her mo(D7)st from her head to her t(G)oes,
She'll say, "I'm not sure if its bus(C)iness of yours,
But I'(D)d like to wal(D7)tz with a l(G)og driver."

CHORUS: (G)For he goes burling down the (C)down white water.
(G)That's where a log driver lea(D)rns to step lightly.
It's bur(G)ling down the do(C)wn white water,
The (G)log driver's waltz pleases (D)girls compl(G)etely.

Kate and Anna McGarrigle from Quebec sing the song, but I don't know if they wrote it. They sure did a lot to popularize the song since they sang it on the NFB animation short of the song.

mmm, the recording of Log Drivers Waltz in the NFB animation was not by the McGarrigles, it was a commercial quasi-folksinger named Michael Mitchell. I auditioned for his band once but did not please him completely...

The McGarrigles had a long friendship with Wade Hemsworth going back to the Montreal folk scene of the mid-sixties, and recorded many of his songs. He wasn't prolific, he wrote less than 20 during his lifetime. But they were all good and some were great.

Negatory, Willie-O! It was definitely the McGarrigles who recorded the sound track for the animated vignette. Here's the url to the National Film Board data... http://cmm.onf.ca/E/titleinfo/index.epl?id=13202.

Michael Mitchell has indeed recorded the song, but was not associated with the 1979 film production.

NFB also had an animated vignette for "The Blackfly Song", another Wade Hemsworth composition. It looked similar but it wasn't the McGarrigles singing it.

That is one of my alltime favorites-- not just the song, but the song set to that video. The combination made it so memorable that even after just one viewing/hearing, I retained the tune and feel of it for several years till I saw it again. I didn't think of myself as a musician at that time-- never would have thought I'd ever let anyone hear me sing, and didn't play an instrument then either-- but the feel of that song is definitely one of the foundations for what became my life as a musician. Gosh, it's great to see/hear it again-- thanks so much for posting the link.

Is there a way to save video's? A real simple way for dummies?

~Susan

The word is "birl" or "birling." It is an old Scottish word that dates from the early 18th century. Webster's defines it as "to rotate by treading," which so perfectly describes the Log Driver's "dance."

Subject: Tree Planter's Waltz - Log Driver's Waltz parody
From: Desert Dancer
Date: 05 May 10 - 11:49 AM

The Tree Planter's Waltz, a re-working for another distinctively Canadian field of employment. (Unfortunately, hip-hopped out of 3/4 time, but the sentiment is there...)

Here's the train of thought that got me to that video this morning: Olivia Judson, who writes on biology for the New York Times, had an article this morning about The Rap Guide to Evolution," by Baba Brinkman. It giving some background on him, she said he claims to have personally planted 1 million trees. Several of the commenters on the essay said they found the claim outrageous.

I went to his web site, www.babasword.com, and realized he was from British Columbia and had worked as a tree planter (replanting after clearcut logging) for 10 years... suddenly it seemed plausible. I googled and found www.tree-planter.com, which has more on the profession. Then I went back to Baba's site and on his "Travel Journals" page, #10 under 2009, the name "The Tree Planter's Waltz" caught my eye. He's got the video and some background there and pointed to the YouTube copy.

Also, there's a link to brinkmanforest.ca -- turns out tree planting is a family business (his parents are shown in action in the beginning of the video).

And one of the commenters mentioned Kate and Anna McGarrigle's "NaCl (sodium chloride) song...

So, that's what happens when "inquiring minds want to know". (Some might call it an hour wasted... I say, time flies when you're having fun!)

1 million trees over 10 years; if say, he planted trees 125 daYS out of the year (roughly 6 months of 5 day weeks) would be about 800 trees a day, or about 100 an hour working 8 hour days.

Hearkening back to when we did a wee bit of re-forestation on our own property - this is very doable.

Has anyone tracked down the copyright date for Wade Hemsworth's song? I suspect it was composed in the 1960s but I like to be accurate.

Hullo Charlie,

Though written much earlier, 1957-1960, it's copyright is 1990 CAPAC. That's as per the entry in his book, published 1990 as well.

It's possible some rights to it were held by the NFB prior to then however I can't say for sure.

Cheers, John
