Subject: BS: licence for a sporran! From: skipy Date: 24 Jun 07 - 02:01 PM See "BBC Front page"! It seem as though you are going to have to get a licence for a sporran if you own one! More laws! Skipy |

Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: Rapparee Date: 24 Jun 07 - 02:05 PM A concealed carry law, huh? |

Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: Alaska Mike Date: 24 Jun 07 - 03:06 PM The article refers to endangered species protection. It requires sporran wearers to apply for and carry a license proving that the fur used to make their sporran was either not on the list of protected species or was killed lawfully prior to 1994. Seems resonable to me. Mine is made of cow hide. Mmmmoooooooo. Mike |

Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: Big Al Whittle Date: 24 Jun 07 - 04:38 PM That seems like an unsavoury task, a tassle examiner... I fear the applicants for that job will not be characters from the top drawer. |

Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: redsnapper Date: 25 Jun 07 - 10:30 AM Seems reasonable to me although one might find more endangered species in the beards of some 'Catters that I know... RS |

Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 25 Jun 07 - 01:21 PM Actually.. there are a few 'Catter's beards that could be USED as sporrans - if only one could find a way of keeping their mouths closed. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: Teribus Date: 26 Jun 07 - 08:13 PM If this had turned up on the 1st of April I would have believed it to be exactly what it is - a bloody joke. With everything going on in the world as it is today - this is something that should be given serious consideration? I somehow think NOT!! |

Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: Gurney Date: 27 Jun 07 - 02:01 AM Obviously a reporter with a sense of humour. The same rule will apply to fur coats and other products showing fur. But can you imagine peering closely at a sporran? You'd get a Skean Dhu in your ear! Someone correct the spelling, please |

Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: TheSnail Date: 28 Jun 07 - 06:17 AM Look, you guys. This is serious. Sporrans are made from the pelts of the haggis. These delightful creatures are in danger of being hunted to extinction. Strict quotas are in force and the license is to prove that the it came from a legal catch. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: JennyO Date: 28 Jun 07 - 09:11 AM Looks like it might be too late for this one. I must say though that it looks like it would make a fine sporran! |
|
Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: Rapparee Date: 28 Jun 07 - 09:29 AM Does this law mean that if I have a sporran made from, say, farm-raised American bison, I'd need a license to wear it in Scotland? I assume that bison are rarely found in Scotland or England. What about black bear or mountain lion? Or muskox? Could I set up a business importing farm-raised elk sporrans into Scotland? How about sporrans made from a bull's scrotum? Inquiring minds want to know these things! |
|
Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: John MacKenzie Date: 28 Jun 07 - 09:35 AM That's more of a ball bag than a sporran Rapaire. I have a certificate that I got with my Akubra hat, which certifies the leather hat band is made from farmed crocodile's skin. This is in order that I may pass through customs without them giving me a hard time with regard to CITES regs. Giok |

Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: Rapparee Date: 28 Jun 07 - 09:41 AM So if I go up into the hills and kill a black bear -- legally -- and I make a sporran out of the pelt, how do I get to wear the sporran in Scotland? (Druther use beaver, because the fur's much softer and far less coarse. Cause less irritation.) Not that I plan to do so...I'm much more the rabbit hunting type. You can get hurt hunting bears, moreso if you hunt bears bare. |

Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: Rapparee Date: 28 Jun 07 - 04:47 PM Ma brother once found a place (Arkansas, fer gawd's sakes!) where you could hunt bear with a spear. Being nuts enough to want to attempt this, he asked me to come along. When I asked him why, he replied, "I want you to stand behind me with high-powered rifle in case I just piss him off." |

Subject: RE: BS: licence for a sporran! From: TheSnail Date: 28 Jun 07 - 07:26 PM Don't try this with a haggis. It'll bite your ankles. |
