Elizabeth Edwards didn't understand the context of Coulter's words? Why would you think that? Edwards doesn't strike me as stupid or ill-informed. Coulter made her remark on Monday. On Tuesday Elizabeth Edwards made her plea for civility.

What apologists for Coulter don't mention is that Elizabeth Edwards has nothing to do with whatever Bill Maher said. So, in what way was the remark about John Edwards called for?

I believe firmly that the people here on the Mudcat and elsewhere who hold furtive admiration for Coulter are people who are too timid to express the same opinions she expresses. But agree with those opinions.

I don't get why it matters to anyone what people like Coulter and Limbaugh say. They're just preaching to their own choirs. Nothing either of them has ever said has made anyone change his or her opinion about anything. The people who listen to or read them already share their opinions. Those people are just looking for validation via the "If it's in the media, it must be true." route.

The smartest thing Elizabeth Edwards could have said is "Who is this person and why should I care about the bile she feels compelled to spew?" There's not a potential Edwards supporter in the entire US to whom Ann Coulter's opinion is worth warm spit.

In its full context, what Coulter said was that, though it raised outrage that she called Edwards a "faggot", it did not raise outrage among the very same people when Bill Maher said that he wished that VP Cheney had been killed in the failed terrorist assassination plot. (I just heard the full sound clips of both Maher's and Coulter's comments)

She was saying that apparently it is okay to wish that a political figure was killed by terrorists, but not okay to call them "faggots".
