Subject: Chords for Old Bones
From: GUEST,Chalkie

I have a CD by the Black Family on which they sing a Jez Lowe song, Old Bones.

Does anyone have the chords for this? I've been trying to sound it out for myself but, mainly cos I'm not very good (yet), what I've jotted down just doesn't sound right.

They do sing it a bit different from Jez Lowe, for instance they have cut the last line from each verse "You won't make old bones you'll see" and just sing the full chorus each time. If you know it you'll know what I mean.

Can anyone help?

I play it in G myself using mandolin accompaniment. Looking at Jez's songbook (fellside 1988), he also uses G and only the three chords of G, C and D

It's basically a 3 chord wonder, D A G or C F G, however Jez plays it in an open turning possibly DADGAD from memory.

I play it in DADGAD, sounds good. It's just D, G and A using a run on the bottom two strings to support the verse lines.

Jez isa personal friend of mine ,he played guitar on my first album Dunmow Flitch, and in those days he didnt use dadgad very much, but the two tunings I mentioned.
however if it works well in dadgad, andsounds good, thats a good reason for doing it,it probably says in his song book, what he does it in.

Bones are a percussion instrument. No chords.

Many thanks folks, it would appear that what I've jotted down is maybe not too far off after all. I just thought that there must be something more to it.

Although you all seem to be refering to Jez Lowe's original and not The Black Family's recording, though they are probably very similar.

Anyway, I'll have a bash again tonight when I get home.

And Raggy, if it still doesn't sound right you can expect some interrogation at Whitby Folk week.

Cheers
