This was originally written for the 2006 Radio Ballads, a series of 6 programmes in the style of the original Radio Ballads.

Topics were the Steel Industry, the Troubles, HIV/Aids, Travelling people who run fairgrounds, the shipyards of tyne and Wear and Clyde and Hunting (Horn of the Hunter) for which Jez Lowe wrote the song required amongst others.

The BBC site has some of the lyrics to songs, but not the one Guest would like, alas.

Here are the lyrics from the Radio Ballad version. Verses 2 and 3 are reversed from the live version and none of the verses are repeated. Each verse is preceded by a quote from a saboteur and what they say is summed up in the following verse.

Saboteurs Song - Jez Lowe

A day needs facing in the dawn’s grey light
A life needs saving if we get things right
Get ready for a battle, a struggle or a fight
If we’re ever gonna save that fox-o, fox-o, fox-o
Get ready for a battle, a struggle or a fight
If we’re ever gonna save that fox-o

Here doggie, good doggie, whatcha gonna do?
Come to your nose, boy, catch upon the dew
Aniseed and lemon gonna make a fool of you
You’ll soon lose that scent-o, scent-o, scent-o
Aniseed and lemon gonna make a fool of you
You’ll soon lose that scent-o

There’ll be killing in the fields in the mists and the moor
Them bullies in the saddle want to taste some blood
Whoever’s in the way bleeds just as good
And all is just as red-o,red-o,red-o
Whoever’s in the way bleeds just as good
And all is just as red-o

Did you ever see cubs pulled squealing from the ground
Drawn to be shredded by a screaming pack o’ hounds
There’s glasses of blood-dipped bumper passed around
Let’s drink to the name of sport-o, sport-o, sport-o
There’s glasses of blood-dipped bumper passed around
Let’s drink to the name of sport-o

My eyes have seen the glory, my limbs have borne the scars
Friends have even fallen in the misty morning wars
But as long as lasts the hunt, long will live the saboteurs
To honour that gift of life-o, life-o, life-o
But as long as lasts the hunt, long will live the saboteurs
To honour that gift of life-o
