Funny Richard, I was gonna suggest buying 2 & playing them at the same time.

Hope you're having fun with it Leo, they are hard to open aren't they. The easy way is to slice down the from top hinge to bottom hinge with a thumb nail, release the bottom hinge & flip the CD face cover up, presto, unwrapped

Hi Riggy, glad you're enjoy it.
The backround is the superstructure of the the Navy's heavy cruiser the USS Salem. We were hired to be roving performers, singing on deck to a reunion crew during the July 4th Tall Ships parade in Boston Harbor. The Captain lost his command as a result & we got invited to sing aboard the USS Constitution, highly irregular.

Hope everybody else who's got one is enjoying, you can also post your thoughts here too.

Of course every school kids can tie a bowline, so what does this mean?

Well a sailor ties a bowline quite differently to a landlubber.

A landlubber will twist a loop into the rope, poke the end through, wrap it 'round the back and poke it back through the loop.

Whereas a sailor will hold the bight in his left hand, lay the (bitter) end across it and twist the loop around the rope in one movement. Then all he has to do is wrap the end 'round and back through the loop.

Barry ; received the CD just before I headed for saltburn Festival.
Played it as soon as I got back.
ABSO-BLOODY-LUTELY WONDERFULL!
Great singing[from you both]; and as others have commented.............many of the songs are New To me.
Definately NOT : just another batch of Seafaring Songs and Shanties.
But an important contribution to the genre.
WELL DONE. On a more personal note ... Brings back many happy memories of meeting and sharing some songs at the YTB and at Portsmouth Festival.
LONG MAY YOU SHAKE THE PLASTER FROM THE WALLS.
But people should also have a chance of hearing you sing like you did on the Whaler in Mystic.The song you wrote yourself.That WAS magic.

A really good deckhand can tie a bowline one handed.

I knew that my buddy would have a good CD. As I don't do much in the way of shanties, and work songs of this type, I expected to get a damn good reference piece so that I could add a few to my repertoire. What arrogance on my part!! What I received was an incredibly enjoyable CD, and the production values were out of this world. I have had the pleasure of hearing Barry sing any number of times. This CD captures his phenomenal voicings and stylings to a tee. Whoever did the recording/mastering really knew their business when it comes to vocal music. Oft times folks that record everything from rock bands to choral groups just don't get it right when it comes to acoustic music or this type of vocal music. That is not the case here. This CD has a punch...... a force to it, that is hard to describe. When that is coupled up with the obvious talent and knowledge of the music, as well as the love of it ..... all I can say is that this is an important CD to own. And you will absolutely enjoy it. I have it in my CD player and just play it over and over.

Great job, wee fella. And the best to Mr. Haddie, as well. You should be proud.

Thanks for refreshing this thread, Charley. This is a really fine CD, and it stresses the sadness, the huge hole that is left by Barry's death. There was a lot of music yet to be recorded by him, a lot of rare chanteys to bring to light, and he had just added Ken Schatz to become a trio. It is so sad, but let's be thankful that there is this wonderful CD as his legacy.

And I would love to be able to hear Barry singing "Bye Bye My Roseanna" -- without which life seems colorless -- again. That song is so definitively Barry that I can't believe it's not recorded somewhere. I keep expecting to find it on YouTube; I keep thinking if I enter just the right search terms there it'll be. Sigh.

It is hard to believe there is only this one CD. But I am betting that many people have videos or recordings of Barry singing, hopefully going back a long ways. While the quality of many of these may not be "the finest kind", as much of the music and singing of this wonderfully talented man ought to be documented and preserved as completely as possible. I wonder, for now, about a thread to which people post if they have indeed recorded Barry - in a living room, at the Getaway, a family picnic, a festival, etc. It could serve as a locator archive in the event Justine and family might decide, at some point, to authorize the replicating of these recordings all in one place.

This might be a really dumb idea, but I thought I would toss it out there. It would basically be a collection of field recordings. We all know what a wonderful resource field recordings are.

Great idea, Janie! I have a tape somewhere oif Barry singing at a workshop at the Moby Dick 150th anniversary Festival at the park where I work, which waqs in 2001. Lani Herrmann recorded it. The sound quality is what one would expect from an audience tape recording, but, as you said, a collection oif field recordings would not be expcted to be a high fidelity project.

I've just wandered into this website while hunting for Gaelic music, and I'm moved to sorrow by the loss of your friend Barry Finn although I never heard him sing or read his posts before today. I'm glad to know that he has made a CD and so many assorted field recordings.

I have a copy, what I don't have is any video clips, it might be an idea to put out a DVD of the clips, it would be good for someone to collate the contributions and edit them, and, as already been said in this thread, it would be a great learning tool for wannabe singers as well as a song bank.

Just got my copy of this CD with a nice note from Natalie. It is everything you all said and more...also poignant knowing, while we listen, he isn't here anymore.

My grandson loves it and started singing along on the chorus of Roller Bowler and Yangtse River Shanty. He had to go home, but I am sure he learn the others, too, at least the chorus of each.
