Hi All,

Seeing as there appears to be so many folkies on here, I just wanted to let you all know about the folk club I help to run. It's based in the Fox and Hounds pub, Kent - near the villages of Eynsford and Shoreham, or for non-locals, about 10 minutes drive away from J3 of the M25.

It's been running for nearly 6 months, and we've had some great acts on including Fiddlefit, Danny Kyle, Pigs Ear, Tone Deaf Leopard, The Dealers, Missouri Gutts, Ian Petrie, Steve Simpson and Eddie Armer to name but a few (and apologies if I've missed anyone!). The club runs every Monday night, with open mic ever fortnight (although there are always a few floor spots on 'gig' nights too). For more info, check out www.myspace.com/foxandhoundsfolk

Update - the next 'gig' night is 19th November, when we have Alun Davies (otherwise known as Cat Stevens' guitarist) and his daughter Becky playing for us. They're a wonderful duo, and also front the excellent group "Good men in the jungle".
Tonight and the 26th November will be open mic, and we have glorious acapella trio Cartouche coming to play (sing?!) for us on the 3rd December, so stay tuned, and remember: The Future's Bright, The Future's Foxy.

Sue - see above! I put Cartouche's gig on here on the 11th Nov, hadn't written that TDL were curating on the 10th Dec as I didn't know whether it had been confirmed - I take it that it is now! Here are directions from Eynsford

Meanwhile this is the way we go. Coming from Orpington via Eynsford. Go across the ford(there is a road bridge) turn left After 400 yards or so you will see some white houses and a war memorial (firs right Bower Lane). Go up this for 2.7 miles. You will pass walled house, (security lights etc). Turn right about 200 yards past this.Sign in Hedge says Fox and Hounds. Massive car park, down there (field).
Pub at end of lane.
Fox and Hounds has a thread, but little info on it.

Thanks for helping promote the thread Sue! Tone Deaf Leopard were one of the prize winners at the first Fox and Hounds Christmas Folk Awards - have a good Christmas, and look forward to seeing you in the new year if I don't see you before.

General announcement: First folk club back in january is on the 7th; All-female acappella trio "Her red shoes". They're a superb and very talented group - and I'm not just saying that because they're also lovely girls and very attractive! ;-) - so hope to see you there.

Hi All,

Hope you all had a good Christmas and New years break, and that the return to work isn't getting you down too much. In case you need some live music to lift your spirits, here's what we've got coming up at the Fox and Hounds Folk club early this year:

On the 21st of January we have a double bill - the Kent Carters, who are an excellent Carter Family band-esque group, with Lake Marie - a much called for americana trio performing songs by the likes of Gillian Welch, John Prine and Emmylou Harris.

The following week we have an open mic - all are welcome!

A great night last night. Foolstroop are Cliff Bayliss and Sue Hudson. They were brilliant. The next two Mondays are Open Mic. and then we have Skinners Rats on March 10th.

31st March - Roger Hubbard and Pete Shaw: Bluesy tunes from this excellent pair of seasoned musicians

Excellent stuff Chris. Some more new names to me at least. Throwing in a few well known names mixed in with new ones works well.I'm as guilty as the next person when it comes to putting myself out to go to see new people, so having them come to me at one of my favourite clubs is a big plus.

That's what it's all about Chris. It's even more rewarding when the acts you like are the ones that the punters like too. I've been running Friday Folk for 20 years now,some years have been better than others, but I think 2008 is going to be the best yet!

What a great night - Skinner's rats were superb, and there were some great floor spots too! A bit of a late finish, but that's what it's all about :-)

Open mic this coming monday (17th), and then the excellent Jack McNeill and Charlie Heys the following monday (24th) - make sure to catch these guys as they're based up in birmingham/carlisle and don't venture down this way very often!

My spies say they were welcomed to the F&H "for the first time". My other spies tell me that they have probably played there literally hundreds of times since the early 70s. But it was the first time for this folk club.

What do you call a Skinny Rat in a suit? The accused! (it used to be one of their jokes)

Hi everyone,

By all accounts Roger and Pete's gig was another superb night, with some excellent floor spots (I'm afraid I missed it, as I managed to acquire tickets for Josh Ritter's london show at the last minute...yes, I am a shameless groupie...). In order to make amends, I will refrain from playing ANY josh ritter songs this monday. Honest.

This monday (7th April) we have the open mic night, so please feel free to come along and join in!

The following week (14th April) we have come full circle with the welcome return of Fiddlefit - an excellent guitar/fiddle duo, and the first act that we ever showcased at the fox and hounds folk club. People have been clamouring for us to book them again ever since their inaugural perfomance at the F+H, and, as always, we live to serve.

After the fiddlefit gig we have another open mic night on the 21st, and then Pete Bruntell joining us for a gig on the 28th. We're all massively excited about having Pete coming to play for us as he is a superb and highly regarded songwriter and performer. http://www.peterbruntnell.com

Hi everyone. Well, last night was an experience! Two minutes before we arrived a power cut happened. Undaunted, we had a candle-lit sing around. Quite a good attendance, and Chris kept his word - no Josh Ritter songs! ( but how do we know he hadn't said they were by someone else? ) He turned up with his keyboard, but thankfully, there is a rather good piano in the pub. The guests next week, by public demand are Fiddlefit, so we hope you all come along, and welcome new members too. Bring candles, just incase.

It was good thanks - quite quiet as I think lots of the regulars had been at Rochester Sweeps all weekend, but some lovely stuff nonetheless. Fiddlefit came and played some great songs, and we had some new faces (Alex and Gerado) who sang and played, plus an array of contributions from the usual suspects - and a rousing sing/playalong to finish off the evening!

You did miss my housemate Andriy singing some russian songs while Fiddlefit played the tunes - a truly unexpected event! (and not in any way precipitated by the fact that he'd been drinking all day....)

This monday we have the innovate Violet Jive duo playing for us - a mixture of originals and old favourites with blues, latin and jazz influences played by guitarist/singer Steve Spall and double bassist Pete Shaw. They're a highly accomplished pair and have a really unique sound so are well worth seeing. All this plus floor spots should make for a very interesting and entertaining night!

Great night. Short on numbers, but you can't fill any venue EVERY time.

The point is the Leopards (spots unchanged) did a sterling job (what else is new?) and everybody had a great time.

The new landlord and landlady are well pleased with the pub in general and the music nights in particular.

Great prospect, and a must to visit, if you are anywhere within 30 miles.

We have the Pig's Ear Folk Ale festival this weekend in Markbeech near Edenbridge - if you're not already coming then I'd definitely suggest checking it out, as it's a lovely weekend of great music, beer and sunshine (and ticket prices are very reasonable by festival standards!). Monday evening 21st July at the Fox and Hounds, Romney Street, Kent is going to be a big night for us. We've had 3 years gigging - the last 18 months fully professional -

Take the week from Thursday - we appeared at Belper Derbyshire on Thursday - Loughborough Leicestershire last night - Frome Somerset tonight - Shrewsbury Shropshire tomorrow and the Fox and Hounds Kent on Monday - and we're off to Germany next Thursday !!!!

It is difficult to believe that this Monday will be the FIRST TIME we have been the main act at a folk club - it's a pleasure that it will be at the Fox and Hounds

Our style just begs for a pub full of happy folkies - forget the library atmosphere - we'd only get embarrassed - sing, clap and dance the night away

Wow, what a fabulous gig. Ron really is a supremely talented songwriter, guitarist and singer - I look forward to catching him again soon. We also had a plethora of wonderful floor spots from both new and old friends, it's great to have so many talented musicians joining us every monday night!

No folk club next week, but there is an all-weekend music festival at the fox and hounds for the bank holiday weekend, so I would encourage any of you who are free to go and check it out as there are some good acts playing.

I have to say it's really friendly, and lovely to meet with nice normal people (did I say that?) with no agendas or anything to worry about. One of the last pieces last night had a chorus about everyone having the blues - I have at the moment, and it's a brilliant way of shifting them for an evening.

When I'm better, I might write about them - the club knows about one sister with threatened constructive dismissal and being picked on by her head teacher while going through our father's death, but not about my ex-neighbour downstairs still a shareholder in our flats who goes on and on and on and other things that wear me down.

Meanwhile, I go to the Fox and Hounds and sing not-blues.

Last night the boys were outnumbered by the girls. Trev and I first arrived,to find Penny was first, and one of the Dregs (male). Our first guest night with Leopards in charge of Fox and Hounds.
One half of Canary Woolf arrived, Danny Kyle, a mystery surrounds his musical partner, and we hope that John is ok. A shortage of floor singers meant 3 songs from TDL, and new boy, Simon being dropped in the deep end, also singing three numbers before Danny took the floor. What a talented young man! Ty and Jane arrived sans guitar, and kindly returned to Jane's to collect one. Sue and Grant Rule did one song each, and Ty and Jane two, before Danny's second set. Only Jane, Sue, Helen and myself on the ladies team tonight. BTW Chris, all these ladies are too old for you dear, and most are spoken for. Glad to hear you're doing well. We had music and song ranging from Irish and english Tradition through to Blues and Americana plus some new self-penned songs from TDL. Undeniably the best guest night we've had, though so many of them have been absolutely great. I spotted at least one other potential floor singer towards the rear of the pub, but he'd not brought his guitar, or picks, and slide. It was his first visit, and he didn't know that we allow floor singers on guest nights. I know, that it's mostly Pete and I that post on here, so if any one else reads this, N.B. you can either, like Geoff did, book with me for a spot via a PM or just turn up. If we are inundated with singers it'll be just the one song, but we'll endeavour to fit you in.

Thank you Pete. Prayers answered methinks. He's still being monitored but is unhooking himself to go to the loo now, without any walking aids. He says that a couple of others with exactly the same symptoms are on a 3 day stay, so hopes to come out on Thursday. No driving for a month though, and he has to give up the fags (result).Do you feel able to run the guest sessions for a while. The pub's covering the fees, so we don't need any cash. Fran said Geoff would put the p.a. out.It would mean you getting there between 7.30 and 8 though, but that's not critical.

Ian Petrie and Steve Shorey return for their 2nd gig tomorrow night. Shame we won't be there, it'll be grrrreat! Latest on recovering heart patient. I have just scoured the internet for, and printed the leaflet that he imagined he'd brought home from the hospital. He's busy reading it. He's eating less rubbish and more fruit. Sleeping a bit during the day, but going to bed earlier and getting up by 8 am. He musn't go outside in wet and windy weather, so today he's a couch potato refining his aimlessly mooching about indoors skills. Before I saw the dos and dont's I got him to unscrew a jar of pasta sauce. He mustn't do that. He's watching Coronation Street, we haven't watched soaps for about 3 years. Half an hour of Corrie later and he's looking for something else to do. Time for tea.

Sorry I chickened out tonight. Set off, got to Farningham, and didn't like the amount of salt on the roads, knowing how wet that lane is, and that it wouldn't be salted. Came home via M&S at Bluewater.

Pete, it was better with a mike, but still not clear. It's tricky, as the sound of your voice is pleasant, breathy but interesting - like a close friend murmuring conversation. Perhaps more concentration on the consonants, which carry the meaning, might help.

I don't think last week was a fair test - it was very icy, and lanes can be a bit of a problem - I used to live up one of them at a place called Idleigh, and the steeper bits were horrendous. Hence my chickening out.

      I managed to get there but the roads from RowDow, once you had climbed the hill from Kemsing that was gritted and clear, they were treachorous, like a skating rink all the way with evidence of cars that had obviously been a little too adventurous. There was no body in attendance, in fact if there were two people in the pub at all, that was it. So naturally, I went home. Let`s hope for better conditions next time.

Have found a few little folk clubs etc. in Coventry to play at, and have been asked to do a couple of solo gigs which was very flattering. Also been to see some great gigs at the Red Lion in Brum - Martin Simpson, Vin Garbutt etc.

Was unable to post yesterday due to technical trouble , but glad the Cat is up and prowling once again. We had a super evening with Nigel Bagge and Eddie Armer. A few more in the audience would have made it even better, but I expect you're alll getting over Chreistmas, New Year, and the ensuing cold snap. Next week we have another guest night when we welcome Paul Cherrington and Pamela Ward to the fox And Hounds. Fran and Geoff have been very good hosts to the club, even paying for the guests, as Phil used to. We are now asking for a contribution towards the cost in the form of a collection, as is the practice at "Traveller's Rest Folk Club" at Twitton.

I'm told Wrotham Hill has been closed. 3 ins or so at Bluewater, and still falling - I'm just going to clear the sloping drive again. Major roads seem do-able, but that lane! If it's been blowing at all up there, it will be deeper, and we would only need to come on someone else who had got stuck, and we'd need stuff to see off hypothermia. Shame.

Years back, I met a guy (had spent his day using his Land Rover to haul cars up the above mentioned hill) who told me how his dad had been out in the snow, on the farm, out back of Strood, and lost fingers to frostbite.

Snow eight inches and still falling in Orpington, Fran rang to cancel at 9.30. Then Les rang, Croydon is awful and IslaSt Clare is due there tonight... think not somehow... Les told Andy and Andy rang me... he's out tobogganing with his kids today.... we've rearranged for June 29th. I do remember snow then, during tennis fortnight. I was working in Wimbledon and was shocked when I looked out of the window. Let's hope it clears for next week eh!

The Fox And Hounds is a venue without benefit of TV, Juke Box, or games machine. It does have a pool table, but users are polite enough not to play on a folk night. It has real ale, cider to die for from the pump, excellent grub, friendly staff, log fire, perfect venue to escape to.

Butt Of Lewis are a local band led by a chap from Orpington called John Edwards. The original line-up started out playing at Orpington Friday Folk in the nineties. They now have a new line-up and different material, lot of country and old-timey stuff as well as Irish, and can be found at Croydon Folk and Blues Club, Ruskin House, on Sundays.

Somehow I thought that you'd said you'd be missing, as did Steve. Trouble was - so was everyone else. Ty came along at hal;f-time to play with the duo, and did a couple of songs. The audience was sparce and comprised friends, relatives and band followers. It seems they'd all come out for a free night's entertainment. It was like getting blood out of stones!

Researching car possibilities. Any offers of transport gratefully received meanwhile. Thanks Phil for running last night, and for the offer of transport to F and H next Monday. We are asking all interested parties to post their opinion on the Club's future. Here are the main points we need to consider.

1/ Fran and Geoff can't afford to keep sponsoring our guest nights, but have agreed to do so until end of April. We will then have to find a new venue if we want to continue as before,.

2/ Would you like it to continue as a singers club at the same place?

3/ Would you like it to continue as a singerss club at a different venue? Somewhere more accessible.

4/ Would you like to have one guest per month at an affordable fee?

5/ We could try to find another venue with a private room, so we could charge an entrance fee.

6/ You could all transfer to our more accessible Friday Folk Club in Orpington with no obligation to turn up every week.

7/ If we decide to stay in the Sevenoaks area, where most of our support is, would someone else commit to looking after the finances and run evenings?

i have had difficulty getting on net -ian and i opened on mon to a small audience but a few more came in after- graham from m gutts next -nice to see him at f and h- good band esp virtuoso guitar -between sets phil followed by stuart -came with trio i think -phil got me to take hat round which most contributed-though i have enjoyed guiests i prefer open mic and singaround and would be happy to alternate those at f and h -ienjoy the variety and oportunity to do my own songs esp with added muso imput -hopefully club will revitalize whichever road it goes

It was the best night since we took over the running of it. Great to see John The Trucker after a couple of years. Still, it was not enough to keep the club going. It seems they, like lots of past venues, see food as the way to go, and want to open the restaurant up on Mondays. We are looking for another venue in the area where we can at least have a singaround, with the occasional guest.Please come to our session on Easter Monday, and to our last two guest nights, April 20th, and 27th. I just had a phone call from Fran. They don't want us up there on Monday because of the hoardes of people that are going to be eating late into the evening, both inside and outside the pub. There's going to be a bit of a problem, isn't there, if any new venue wants to know why we have been stopped from using the existing place? If we say that it's because they want to build up the food side, fine, but if they ask around the publican's grapevine and are told we haven't brought in much money, could be tricky. We've got the argument about difficulty of access, especially in winter, on our side, of course.

The money thing could be a hinderance I guess, but very few landlords are up for actually paying for guests. In that respect they have treated us not unfairly. Should we get to play in somewhere where the bar is the only place to play, then we go down the singaround route for a while. To have guests we really need to have a seperate room where we can charge admission. Whatever happens, we have to see exactly who will come along to a new venue. This will determine the type of club it's to grow into. Hopefully everyone will come over, and we'll pick up some different ones.

To do well out of food, given where they are, they will need to offer something special. My sister has been taking me round pubs in Oxfordshire with locally sourced products, such as jugged hare (I missed that one, due to teaching the next day), cooked by real foodie chefs. Hmm.

That was where Phil scored. He had a friendly pub, good food, and the more than occasional speciality. He could cook as well, when between chefs. Although the food is cooked in house still, it does lack that special touch. The walkers will be so hungry from their exertions on Monday, they will probably welcome anything I guess.

Great News Folks


The Folk Club has a brand new venue, and it's not too far away from the old one. Lovely Pete has arranged for us to go to his local, The Foresters in Wilmington. It's address is 235 Dartford High Street, but that's at the pretty end!

We start there on Monday 4th May. I know it's a Bank Holiday, but please make an effort to be there. We want to create a good impression. I have spoken to the landlady, Katy, she seems very nice and keen to have us there. We'll probably coming straight from Rochester Sweeps Festival.

slight mistake sue -wilmington address is high rd-ithink im away first week in may but i had told landlord that singarounds were from a handful to a dozen or so -it may be we get musos from open mics this way - foresters folk club has a certain ring about it - dont you think-see you tomorrow-all things equal

Dear Girl Friday,
I have just looked up your Website and your statement as to bookings is very unfriendly to say the least. Some of us go out for free or expenses or a percentage of the take. Some of us are willing to help Folk Clubs out who are struggling. To slam the door on new comers is hardly welcoming.Or am I misreading it?
