Subject: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,Jazzy Date: 10 Nov 07 - 07:28 PM Hi All, Seeing as there appears to be so many folkies on here, I just wanted to let you all know about the folk club I help to run. It's based in the Fox and Hounds pub, Kent - near the villages of Eynsford and Shoreham, or for non-locals, about 10 minutes drive away from J3 of the M25. It's been running for nearly 6 months, and we've had some great acts on including Fiddlefit, Danny Kyle, Pigs Ear, Tone Deaf Leopard, The Dealers, Missouri Gutts, Ian Petrie, Steve Simpson and Eddie Armer to name but a few (and apologies if I've missed anyone!). The club runs every Monday night, with open mic ever fortnight (although there are always a few floor spots on 'gig' nights too). For more info, check out www.myspace.com/foxandhoundsfolk Hope to see you soon, Chris |

They're a wonderful duo, and also front the excellent group "Good men in the jungle". Tonight and the 26th November will be open mic, and we have glorious acapella trio Cartouche coming to play (sing?!) for us on the 3rd December, so stay tuned, and remember: The Future's Bright, The Future's Foxy. (Although I'm pretty sure that you guys ran our impromtu sing-around on monday, so many thanks for that too). I'm sure that 3 posts in 5 days counts as more than 'occasional' updates :-P All the best Chris |

Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 24 Feb 08 - 10:44 PM Excellent stuff Chris. Some more new names to me at least. Throwing in a few well known names mixed in with new ones works well.I'm as guilty as the next person when it comes to putting myself out to go to see new people, so having them come to me at one of my favourite clubs is a big plus. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,jazzy Date: 25 Feb 08 - 08:34 AM Definitely - it's nice to get a mix of old favourites and new talent (and I love the fact that running the club means we can book people that we personally want to see too!). Hope to see you (and anyone else who fancies it!) at the open mic session tonight! Chris |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 27 Feb 08 - 09:02 PM That's what it's all about Chris. It's even more rewarding when the acts you like are the ones that the punters like too. I've been running Friday Folk for 20 years now, some years have been better than others, but I think 2008 is going to be the best yet! |

Stallion - thanks for the heads up, I'll have a listen to 2BS&S when I get the chance (unfortunately I'm at work at the moment so can't!) Chris |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 04 Mar 08 - 01:36 PM Unfortunately Ty was indisposed last night, but we had a fine singaround with Don, Ian and Dave, Grant, Sue, Lindsay and Chris. Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST Date: 12 Mar 08 - 11:00 AM What a great night - Skinner's rats were superb, and there were some great floor spots too! A bit of a late finish, but that's what it's all about :-) Open mic this coming monday (17th), and then the excellent Jack McNeill and Charlie Heys the following monday (24th) - make sure to catch these guys as they're based up in birmingham/carlisle and don't venture down this way very often! You can have a listen to them here: http://www.myspace.com/jackmcneillandcharlieheys Or hear them playing in the finals of the BBC young folk awards here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/events/youngfolkaward2008/finalists.shtml Cheers! Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Richard Bridge Date: 12 Mar 08 - 12:17 PM Take one or two (or formerly three) Skinny Rats, and add beer. The evening may well continue... My spies say they were welcomed to the F&H "for the first time". My other spies tell me that they have probably played there literally hundreds of times since the early 70s. But it was the first time for this folk club. What do you call a Skinny Rat in a suit? The accused! (it used to be one of their jokes) |

Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 18 Mar 08 - 10:30 AM Another good evening. Not too many of us because it was Paddy's Night. It was good to see Wysiwyg again. We are on next week and it's a guest night. See Jazzy's earlier posting for details. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST Date: 20 Mar 08 - 06:16 PM Sorry for missing monday's open session - I'm afraid I was swotting away as I had a med school interview first thing wednesday morning and had to drive up tuesday night! Hope it was a good'un, and look forward to seeing you all on monday for Jack McNeill and Charlie Heys, who will be fresh from playing at the Gosport Festival alongside Show of Hands, Flook, Oysterband, Wheeler Street and a whole bunch of other great acts (http://www.gosportfestival.co.uk/). Cheers! Chris |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 23 Mar 08 - 04:37 PM We had a great turnout on Friday, think some of them will be coming to Fox and Hounds tomorrow. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,Jazzy Date: 25 Mar 08 - 05:38 AM Wow - what can I say? An amazing gig last night, and some absolutely brilliant floor spots from both new and old friends. Thanks to all for coming along and making it a really memorable evening! Next week another treat for you - Roger Hubbard and Pete Shaw, lovely guitar/double bass duo playing both originals and old favourites, plus an assortment of floor spots. For more info on Roger and his music check out http://www.rogerhubbard.co.uk/ Hope to see you all soon! Chris |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 25 Mar 08 - 09:33 PM Hi. Since meeting Alquimia and Mark last Friday, and suggesting they come to F and H, they whisked us off to Cecil Sharp House tonight. Our two songs were well received. We're all off to Folkmob tomorrow if we still have any energy. See you next week. h |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,jazzy Date: 04 Apr 08 - 07:07 AM Hi everyone, By all accounts Roger and Pete's gig was another superb night, with some excellent floor spots (I'm afraid I missed it, as I managed to acquire tickets for Josh Ritter's london show at the last minute...yes, I am a shameless groupie...). In order to make amends, I will refrain from playing ANY josh ritter songs this monday. Honest. This monday (7th April) we have the open mic night, so please feel free to come along and join in! The following week (14th April) we have come full circle with the welcome return of Fiddlefit - an excellent guitar/fiddle duo, and the first act that we ever showcased at the fox and hounds folk club. People have been clamouring for us to book them again ever since their inaugural perfomance at the F+H, and, as always, we live to serve. After the fiddlefit gig we have another open mic night on the 21st, and then Pete Bruntell joining us for a gig on the 28th. We're all massively excited about having Pete coming to play for us as he is a superb and highly regarded songwriter and performer. http://www.peterbruntnell.com Have a good weekend, and hope to see you all on monday! Chris |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 08 Apr 08 - 02:39 PM Hi everyone. Well, last night was an experience! Two minutes before we arrived a power cut happened. Undaunted, we had a candle-lit sing around. Quite a good attendance, and Chris kept his word - no Josh Ritter songs! ( but how do we know he hadn't said they were by someone else? ) He turned up with his keyboard, but thankfully, there is a rather good piano in the pub. The guests next week, by public demand are Fiddlefit, so we hope you all come along, and welcome new members too. Bring candles, just incase. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,jazzy Date: 14 Apr 08 - 05:47 AM Our all-acoustic candlelit session was definitely unexpected but great fun! No Josh Ritter songs, honest (although I did play a Springsteen song that Josh has covered...but I'm sure that doesn't count! ;-) ). Looking forward to Fiddlefit (and some electricity!) tonight - see you all later Chris |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 16 Apr 08 - 06:39 PM Another fantastic night at The Fox and Hounds. Afraid the Josh Ritter songs were back, but one can't have everything. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Alan Day Date: 17 Apr 08 - 05:48 PM Your club is not a million miles away from me,I will try and bring my concertina along for a play, if allowed. Your link does not appear to be working. Al |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 17 Apr 08 - 08:02 PM Hi Al. Try going to it from my website www.orpingtonfridayfolk.bravehost.com. This thread is updated either by Chris or me on a regular basis. Suggest you trace it. Sue |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,jazzy Date: 21 Apr 08 - 01:46 PM Hi Al - would be great to have you and your concertina along for a session! The URL for the fox and hounds folk club is: www.myspace.com/foxandhoundsfolk For some reason when you use the "make a link" function on this forum, it sticks "www.mudcat.org" before the URL, which results in a dead link! Never mind, you can copy and paste the above link into your browser and it should work fine. (I continue to be disappointed by the anti-Josh Ritter prejudice that seems be displayed by certain regulars at the Fox and Hounds! ;-) ) Look forward to seeing you all tonight - and just a quick reminder that we have the amazing Pete Bruntell (http://www.myspace.com/peterbruntnell) playing a the F&H on the 28th April (i.e. next week). He really is a superb songwriter, so if you're free then come on down - and if you're not, then cancel your plans and come anyways! Chris |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 23 Apr 08 - 07:14 PM Well, two of the Josh Ritter "Appreciation Society" members won't be there next Monday. Sue has her Estate Plotholders Tri-annual Meeting that night. Hope it goes well. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,jazzy Date: 28 Apr 08 - 07:55 AM Just a quick note to remind anyone browsing we have Pete Bruntnell playing at the fox and hounds folk club tonight - not to be missed! |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST Date: 05 May 08 - 08:36 AM If anyone is feeling down at the prospect of work tomorrow, fear not! We have an open mic session down at the fox and hounds tonight, so come along, bring your instruments, and finish the bank holiday with a fine flourish of music! |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 06 May 08 - 09:03 PM So how was it then ? We were exhausted after coming home from Sweeps. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,jazzy Date: 07 May 08 - 07:56 AM It was good thanks - quite quiet as I think lots of the regulars had been at Rochester Sweeps all weekend, but some lovely stuff nonetheless. Fiddlefit came and played some great songs, and we had some new faces (Alex and Gerado) who sang and played, plus an array of contributions from the usual suspects - and a rousing sing/playalong to finish off the evening! You did miss my housemate Andriy singing some russian songs while Fiddlefit played the tunes - a truly unexpected event! (and not in any way precipitated by the fact that he'd been drinking all day....) This monday we have the innovate Violet Jive duo playing for us - a mixture of originals and old favourites with blues, latin and jazz influences played by guitarist/singer Steve Spall and double bassist Pete Shaw. They're a highly accomplished pair and have a really unique sound so are well worth seeing. All this plus floor spots should make for a very interesting and entertaining night! See you then, Chris |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 07 May 08 - 08:17 AM Sounds as though you had a ball ! No reason why we can't come next week. See you then. Sue |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,jazzy Date: 12 May 08 - 05:25 AM Hope you all had a lovely weekend, just a quick reminder that we have the Violet Jive playing this evenng at the F&H. You can find out more here http://www.thevioletjive.co.uk/ - or alternatively, just come along tonight and experience them first-hand! Cheers, Chris |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,Cats Date: 12 May 08 - 10:45 AM I hope everyone at the Fox and Hounds Folk Club has a good a time as everyone who turned up to the Fox and Hounds weekend of singing [on Dartmoor]. We did have someone on the F&H 2008 thread who thought we were the same.. only a few hundred miles different. Perhaps we should have a Fox and Hounds meets the Fox and Hounds? Sorry we are so far away or we would come to the club, it sounds excellent. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,jazzy Date: 13 May 08 - 06:29 AM Hi Cats - the weekend of singing on Dartmoor sounds excellent! I think the chap who had us confused came and played at the F&H last night, so sounds like he was pointed in the right direction - thanks for that! What a great session we had last night! Lots of new (and old) friends playing floor spots, and a superb gig by the Violet Jive - look forward to seeing them again soon. Next week we have an open mic session, so hope to see you all then. Cheers, Chris |

Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 19 May 08 - 07:05 PM Great night. Short on numbers, but you can't fill any venue EVERY time. The point is the Leopards (spots unchanged) did a sterling job (what else is new?) and everybody had a great time. The new landlord and landlady are well pleased with the pub in general and the music nights in particular. Great prospect, and a must to visit, if you are anywhere within 30 miles. Don T. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,jazzy Date: 20 May 08 - 04:49 AM Glad it all went well - and thanks again Leopards for hosting the sing-around! Look forward to seeing you all next week, Chris |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 20 May 08 - 11:21 AM Not much to add to that except that we had two unaccompanied singers who were a welcome breath of fresh air. I felt last night that it was one of the best singarounds that we've had there. In order to raise the profile I'm adding a Fox and Hounds Page to one or both of my websites, as I've done with the Fab Club. Sue |

Just to let you know the Kent Carters are playing at the Wheatsheef in Kemsing tonight - they're an excellent trio who play in the style of the original Carter Family, more information here: http://www.ricktownend.co.uk/KentCarters.htm We have the Pig's Ear Folk Ale festival this weekend in Markbeech near Edenbridge - if you're not already coming then I'd definitely suggest checking it out, as it's a lovely weekend of great music, beer and sunshine (and ticket prices are very reasonable by festival standards!). Info and lineup available here: http://www.pigs-sty.com/event.php?id=1 Finally - we have a sing-around on monday at the F&H, so if anyone fancies coming along to play it would be great to see you (some fresh bodies would be a big help, as we'll all be knackered from being at the Pig's Ear festival all weekend!). Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,Norcsalordie Date: 19 Jul 08 - 04:20 PM Monday evening 21st July at the Fox and Hounds, Romney Street, Kent is going to be a big night for us. We've had 3 years gigging - the last 18 months fully professional - Take the week from Thursday - we appeared at Belper Derbyshire on Thursday - Loughborough Leicestershire last night - Frome Somerset tonight - Shrewsbury Shropshire tomorrow and the Fox and Hounds Kent on Monday - and we're off to Germany next Thursday !!!! It is difficult to believe that this Monday will be the FIRST TIME we have been the main act at a folk club - it's a pleasure that it will be at the Fox and Hounds Our style just begs for a pub full of happy folkies - forget the library atmosphere - we'd only get embarrassed - sing, clap and dance the night away Venez nombreuse as the French would say - we promise you a good evening at a great club www.norcsalordie.com/norcsalordie%20news.htm see you Monday Paul + Martin = Norcsalordie |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,jazzy Date: 20 Jul 08 - 08:57 AM What they said! Norcsalordie are a great duo and lots of fun - looking forward to having them play a whole gig for us tomorrow night. Hope to see you all there! Cheers, Chris |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,rafflesbear Date: 20 Jul 08 - 04:24 PM has anyone been to an English folk club where people have spontaneously got up out of the audience and started dancing ? - other than organised dancing - can't say I have (maybe this should be a new thread) |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 21 Jul 08 - 09:06 PM Yes, several times, rafflesbear. Tonight was absolute magic. If you missed Norcsalordie tonight, you can catch up with them at Broadstairs Folk Week. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,jazzy Date: 23 Jul 08 - 12:29 PM Seconded. Norcsalordie were superb on monday night at the F&H - do try to catch them down at Broadstairs! This monday (28th) we have a sing-around, so please feel free to come and join us - and don't forget to bring along your songs, instruments, poetry, clog dancing.... The following week we have singer/songwriter Andy Smythe - he is excellent, but don't take my word for it: "Songs beyond the scope of most singer/songwriters" TIME OUT "Beautiful voice – songs straight from the heart" MIKE SCOTT of THE WATERBOYS For more info and to have a listen, check out http://www.andysmythe.com See you all soon, and keep on folkin'! Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 30 Jul 08 - 08:36 AM Not bad attendance for the singaround, considering it's holiday time. TDL, Paul and Helen, Peter and Ian, Penny, and F and H Newbies, Colin and Helen. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 05 Aug 08 - 10:49 AM Another triumph. Not just Andy Smythe but his whole band. I have heard Andy and violin player, Barry, but not with third member Les Elvin. Not just Andy's songs either. There was a good mix of other material too. So many wou ld-be floor singers, they didn't all get on! Open mic. next week, and, a Leopard free zone. We'll be in Broadstairs! Next guest is also from Orpington Friday Folk - Ron Trueman-Border. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,jazzy Date: 11 Aug 08 - 12:48 PM Just to remind everyone that we have an open mic session tonight - so please feel free to come and play! Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Penny S. Date: 12 Aug 08 - 05:17 AM It was a brilliant night last night - no mike, though - but brilliant musicianship, and people I hadn't heard there before (but I'm not there every week). Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,jazzy Date: 18 Aug 08 - 07:44 PM Wow, what a fabulous gig. Ron really is a supremely talented songwriter, guitarist and singer - I look forward to catching him again soon. We also had a plethora of wonderful floor spots from both new and old friends, it's great to have so many talented musicians joining us every monday night! No folk club next week, but there is an all-weekend music festival at the fox and hounds for the bank holiday weekend, so I would encourage any of you who are free to go and check it out as there are some good acts playing. Much love, Chris |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 19 Aug 08 - 08:07 AM Anyone who wasn't there last night missed a fantastic piece of entertainment. Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,Penny S. (on the other computer) Date: 19 Aug 08 - 04:49 PM I have to say it's really friendly, and lovely to meet with nice normal people (did I say that?) with no agendas or anything to worry about. One of the last pieces last night had a chorus about everyone having the blues - I have at the moment, and it's a brilliant way of shifting them for an evening. When I'm better, I might write about them - the club knows about one sister with threatened constructive dismissal and being picked on by her head teacher while going through our father's death, but not about my ex-neighbour downstairs still a shareholder in our flats who goes on and on and on and other things that wear me down. Meanwhile, I go to the Fox and Hounds and sing not-blues. Penny |

Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 02 Sep 08 - 07:12 PM Last night the boys were outnumbered by the girls. Trev and I first arrived,to find Penny was first, and one of the Dregs (male). Next, 3 ladies, Jenny, Helen, and Joanne, then Helen, Paul Steele's lady. Then the male quotient went up by 2 with the arrival of Steve, then Ty. First timer Linda (Essex Girl) then upped the ladies team. Definitely ladie's night, a most unusaual occurence. |

Date: 08 Sep 08 - 05:03 AM Hi all, I'm good thanks Sue - just settling in to Warwick, moved into my house in Coventry on saturday (and then played a gig that night in Oxford - Christchurch college, very posh!). Got my enrolmenty stuff today and have various introductory things (and a couple of small social events!) all week. How is everyone doing? Glad to hear the club is still going strong - although I'm disappointed to hear that all the ladies start attending AFTER I leave....was it the Josh Ritter? Much love, Chris P.S. Photos of our "Doctors and nurses pub crawl" this coming thursday - with me in home-made nurses outfit - to follow... |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 09 Sep 08 - 08:33 AM Our first guest night with Leopards in charge of Fox and Hounds. One half of Canary Woolf arrived, Danny Kyle, a mystery surrounds his musical partner, and we hope that John is ok. A shortage of floor singers meant 3 songs from TDL, and new boy, Simon being dropped in the deep end, also singing three numbers before Danny took the floor. What a talented young man! Ty and Jane arrived sans guitar, and kindly returned to Jane's to collect one. Sue and Grant Rule did one song each, and Ty and Jane two, before Danny's second set. Only Jane, Sue, Helen and myself on the ladies team tonight. BTW Chris, all these ladies are too old for you dear, and most are spoken for. Glad to hear you're doing well. Can't wait to see these photos!!! Love Sue. |

Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Penny S. Date: 16 Sep 08 - 01:46 PM Unfortunately, not enough. Mostly now the problem is that I'm not sleeping and have not ennough energy to face much driving! However, when I do make it back, I have a new song, beginning: As I walked out on the steep streets of Stroud, On the steep streets of Stroud on one wet Saturday... The chorus goes (in case anyone wants to practise beforehand): So rub in the Deep Heat, the gel Ibuprofen, Roll on the Tubigrip, tightly to hold, Take paracetamol morning and evening, Rest with the leg up and compresses cold. I'm going to send a copy to Stroud council with the suggestion that the manhole covers be treated with antiskid material. Penny |

Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 26 Sep 08 - 11:42 AM Hi Pete nice to have you on the thread. What's good about folk music is that it's all embracing, especially at fox and hounds. You do need to work on your voice projection a bit though as you tend to get drowned out by your electric and Ian's keyboard. Don has said he's coming back soon... hooray! Se you Monday |

Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 04 Nov 08 - 08:26 PM Undeniably the best guest night we've had, though so many of them have been absolutely great. I spotted at least one other potential floor singer towards the rear of the pub, but he'd not brought his guitar, or picks, and slide. It was his first visit, and he didn't know that we allow floor singers on guest nights. I know, that it's mostly Pete and I that post on here, so if any one else reads this, N.B. you can either, like Geoff did, book with me for a spot via a PM or just turn up. If we are inundated with singers it'll be just the one song, but we'll endeavour to fit you in. |

He's still being monitored but is unhooking himself to go to the loo now, without any walking aids. He says that a couple of others with exactly the same symptoms are on a 3 day stay, so hopes to come out on Thursday. No driving for a month though, and he has to give up the fags (result).Do you feel able to run the guest sessions for a while. The pub's covering the fees, so we don't need any cash. Fran said Geoff would put the p.a. out.It would mean you getting there between 7.30 and 8 though, but that's not critical. |

He's busy reading it. He's eating less rubbish and more fruit. Sleeping a bit during the day, but going to bed earlier and getting up by 8 am. He musn't go outside in wet and windy weather, so today he's a couch potato refining his aimlessly mooching about indoors skills. Before I saw the dos and dont's I got him to unscrew a jar of pasta sauce. He mustn't do that. He's watching Coronation Street, we haven't watched soaps for about 3 years. BTW, I had a sneaky glance through your word sheet the other week when you left it on the table by me - you really use words skilfully, they are really good, but I find it hard to hear them when you are performing, which is a pity. I had heard of the orange tree, though I assumed it was the one at Ashford. good that you're getting out and about, and spreading the word about f and h. And thanks for keeping this thread going. Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Penny S. Date: 01 Dec 08 - 05:33 PM Sorry I chickened out tonight. Set off, got to Farningham, and didn't like the amount of salt on the roads, knowing how wet that lane is, and that it wouldn't be salted. Came home via M&S at Bluewater. Pete, it was better with a mike, but still not clear. It's tricky, as the sound of your voice is pleasant, breathy but interesting - like a close friend murmuring conversation. Perhaps more concentration on the consonants, which carry the meaning, might help. Penny |

Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,Girl Friday sans cookie Date: 02 Dec 08 - 11:17 AM Thanks Pete. Very disappointing report. Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Penny S. Date: 07 Dec 08 - 03:59 PM I don't think last week was a fair test - it was very icy, and lanes can be a bit of a problem - I used to live up one of them at a place called Idleigh, and the steeper bits were horrendous. Hence my chickening out. Penny |

Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,John from Kemsing Date: 06 Jan 09 - 06:54 AM Pete, I managed to get there but the roads from RowDow, once you had climbed the hill from Kemsing that was gritted and clear, they were treachorous, like a skating rink all the way with evidence of cars that had obviously been a little too adventurous. There was no body in attendance, in fact if there were two people in the pub at all, that was it. So naturally, I went home. Let`s hope for better conditions next time. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 06 Jan 09 - 07:18 AM Well, you were both very brave. I spoke to Fran around 6 to say it was too dodgy to venture out, as Trev can't take cold weather, and she confirmed my suspicians... treachorous underfoot and heavy snow. I had a call from Simon, who we hadn't seen since October. He was going to go for it.Let's hope it all clears by next week. |

All is well here, had the first of my exams today, so doing a bit of procrastination online before I get back to the books for thursday's exam. Have found a few little folk clubs etc. in Coventry to play at, and have been asked to do a couple of solo gigs which was very flattering. Also been to see some great gigs at the Red Lion in Brum - Martin Simpson, Vin Garbutt etc. Hope to catch up with you all soon! Much love, Chris |

We had a super evening with Nigel Bagge and Eddie Armer. A few more in the audience would have made it even better, but I expect you're alll getting over Chreistmas, New Year, and the ensuing cold snap. Next week we have another guest night when we welcome Paul Cherrington and Pamela Ward to the fox And Hounds. Fran and Geoff have been very good hosts to the club, even paying for the guests, as Phil used to. We are now asking for a contribution towards the cost in the form of a collection, as is the practice at "Traveller's Rest Folk Club" at Twitton. |

Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Penny S. Date: 02 Feb 09 - 09:13 AM I'm told Wrotham Hill has been closed. 3 ins or so at Bluewater, and still falling - I'm just going to clear the sloping drive again. Major roads seem do-able, but that lane! If it's been blowing at all up there, it will be deeper, and we would only need to come on someone else who had got stuck, and we'd need stuff to see off hypothermia. Shame. Years back, I met a guy (had spent his day using his Land Rover to haul cars up the above mentioned hill) who told me how his dad had been out in the snow, on the farm, out back of Strood, and lost fingers to frostbite. Penny |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Penny S. Date: 02 Feb 09 - 09:16 AM And those of you across the pond, I know this is not a lot, but you don't know that lane, and the house spacing up it. Penny |

Then Les rang, Croydon is awful and IslaSt Clare is due there tonight... think not somehow... Les told Andy and Andy rang me... he's out tobogganing with his kids today.... we've rearranged for June 29th. I do remember snow then, during tennis fortnight. And I was teaching Tuesday, so a late night seemed a bad idea, especially as it seemed likely that I would drop off somewhere along the lane. Sorry to hear about Josephine's accident, Pete. Doesn't it rub in what the ads say about speed, though. I'm so glad she's OK. Penny |

We were the only floor singers again though. We can't be sure how the recordings turned out yet, time will tell. I'm sure that all will be well. There was plenty of atmosphere tonight. Let's hope for a good crowd next week forVicky and Simon. |

Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 11 Mar 09 - 07:55 AM I can only be so persuasive. There are some people who are impervious to my charm. Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 17 Mar 09 - 11:20 AM I agree, very entertaining, and there was a good feeling about the pub last night. I will be booking them for Orpington Friday Folk. Alas they will not get a paid gig at Fox And Hounds now that funding is being withdrawn. Guest nights will continue to be sponsored by the pub up to end of April. Last guest night April 27th. Discussion on club's future will take place at the pub on Monday 30th March. Be there if you can. |

Shame it's picking up now that we have to quit. If you would like to answer any of the points that I have just made on the Coming to Fox and Hounds thread, please do so. In fact, it should probably be copied onto this thread too. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 24 Mar 09 - 10:35 AM Researching car possibilities. Any offers of transport gratefully received meanwhile. Thanks Phil for running last night, and for the offer of transport to F and H next Monday. We are asking all interested parties to post their opinion on the Club's future. Here are the main points we need to consider. 1/ Fran and Geoff can't afford to keep sponsoring our guest nights, but have agreed to do so until end of April. We will then have to find a new venue if we want to continue as before,. 2/ Would you like it to continue as a singers club at the same place? 3/ Would you like it to continue as a singerss club at a different venue? Somewhere more accessible. 4/ Would you like to have one guest per month at an affordable fee? 5/ We could try to find another venue with a private room, so we could charge an entrance fee. 6/ You could all transfer to our more accessible Friday Folk Club in Orpington with no obligation to turn up every week. 7/ If we decide to stay in the Sevenoaks area, where most of our support is, would someone else commit to looking after the finances and run evenings? If you are a member of Mudcat you can send me a message via the pm facility. If not, and it's easy to join up: you can message me here Fox And Hounds Folk Club |

Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 29 Mar 09 - 04:15 PM Thanks Pete - was beginning to wonder where everyone had got to. Weare picking up a car tomorrow - Hyundai Matrix. Should cope with Bower Lane and tow the caravan when we get tow bar fitted.Videos taken on the night last week are now up on YouTube if anyone is interested. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 31 Mar 09 - 10:35 AM Great evening last night. Good number of singers, and we had a good half time natter about where the club is going. Further news in a couple of weeks time. See you next Monday for Paul and Ron. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 07 Apr 09 - 01:53 PM It was the best night since we took over the running of it. Great to see John The Trucker after a couple of years. Still, it was not enough to keep the club going. It seems they, like lots of past venues, see food as the way to go, and want to open the restaurant up on Mondays. We are looking for another venue in the area where we can at least have a singaround, with the occasional guest. Please come to our session on Easter Monday, and to our last two guest nights, April 20th, and 27th. Watch this space for news. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Penny S. Date: 08 Apr 09 - 05:28 AM It was a very good night, apart from my sausage and mash which was uncharacteristically not something I want to repeat. A pity. It's been a very friendly club which has helped me get back into folk after a very long break. Penny |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 08 Apr 09 - 06:05 PM Let's hope that we can all stay in touch until a new venue is found. I will be collecting phone nos. and emails from you all |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,pete Date: 08 Apr 09 - 06:45 PM some nice songs on monday -they seem to have quite a following\how far out would we go for a new venue -is it worth asking around wilmington way-lots of open mics around but would be good to retain the intimate interaction of the singround and eqaul opportunity to participate afforded by them |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 09 Apr 09 - 10:25 AM I just had a phone call from Fran. They don't want us up there on Monday because of the hoardes of people that are going to be eating late into the evening, both inside and outside the pub. I asked can't we sit outside, but she said no.If we hadn't got guests on the last 2 nights, I'd have cancelled it completely ! Pete... Wilmington would be fine for us, coming from Orpington and Belvedere. Shall we say, anywhere in a ten mile radius of Orpington, preferably in a village ? |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Penny S. Date: 10 Apr 09 - 06:27 AM There's going to be a bit of a problem, isn't there, if any new venue wants to know why we have been stopped from using the existing place? If we say that it's because they want to build up the food side, fine, but if they ask around the publican's grapevine and are told we haven't brought in much money, could be tricky. We've got the argument about difficulty of access, especially in winter, on our side, of course. Penny |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 10 Apr 09 - 07:38 PM The money thing could be a hinderance I guess, but very few landlords are up for actually paying for guests. In that respect they have treated us not unfairly. Should we get to play in somewhere where the bar is the only place to play, then we go down the singaround route for a while. To have guests we really need to have a seperate room where we can charge admission. Whatever happens, we have to see exactly who will come along to a new venue. This will determine the type of club it's to grow into. Hopefully everyone will come over, and we'll pick up some different ones. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 11 Apr 09 - 01:43 PM Guest. you are probably right. There just isn't the same atmosphere there since Phil went. Be warned, your post is likely to get deleted, as its an anonymous one. |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Penny S. Date: 12 Apr 09 - 07:19 AM To do well out of food, given where they are, they will need to offer something special. My sister has been taking me round pubs in Oxfordshire with locally sourced products, such as jugged hare (I missed that one, due to teaching the next day), cooked by real foodie chefs. Hmm. Penny |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,Girl Friday Date: 12 Apr 09 - 09:25 AM That was where Phil scored. He had a friendly pub, good food, and the more than occasional speciality. He could cook as well, when between chefs. Although the food is cooked in house still, it does lack that special touch. The walkers will be so hungry from their exertions on Monday, they will probably welcome anything I guess. |

Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 19 Apr 09 - 04:38 PM Thanks Pete.. Great News Folks The Folk Club has a brand new venue, and it's not too far away from the old one. Lovely Pete has arranged for us to go to his local, The Foresters in Wilmington. It's address is 235 Dartford High Street, but that's at the pretty end! We start there on Monday 4th May. I know it's a Bank Holiday, but please make an effort to be there. We want to create a good impression. I have spoken to the landlady, Katy, she seems very nice and keen to have us there. We'll probably coming straight from Rochester Sweeps Festival. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&hl=en&tab=wl Thats the Google Map and directions from Eynsford Will link to that but I don't want to lose this message off my clipboard yet So,let's make a date for Mondays at 8.30 starting with a singaround . Sue |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Girl Friday Date: 19 Apr 09 - 05:30 PM That should say Dartford High road, not street |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: GUEST,pete Date: 19 Apr 09 - 05:34 PM slight mistake sue -wilmington address is high rd-ithink im away first week in may but i had told landlord that singarounds were from a handful to a dozen or so -it may be we get musos from open mics this way - foresters folk club has a certain ring about it - dont you think-see you tomorrow-all things equal |
Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Pigstrings Date: 19 Apr 09 - 06:05 PM Best of luck with the new venue. Way too far for us on a weeknight, I'm afraid. Sue |

Subject: RE: Fox and Hounds Folk Club, Kent From: Alan Day Date: 02 Dec 09 - 12:17 PM Dear Girl Friday, I have just looked up your Website and your statement as to bookings is very unfriendly to say the least. Some of us go out for free or expenses or a percentage of the take. Some of us are willing to help Folk Clubs out who are struggling. To slam the door on new comers is hardly welcoming.Or am I misreading it? Al
